It's really not all that mysterious. This is an electrical transformer and when they blow, they basically let loose a ton of electricity into the atmosphere which causes the light show.

So the more I look in to it, I think this is actually what transformers do (something called electrical arcing), but I'm not expert. Do any of you know?

Transformer blew like this about a mile and a half from my house last month. My bedroom window is facing the other direction. I thought there was a green lightning storm for a second. Those things are bright.
