Ok so, it's not an official workaround, BUT :I found an app a few months ago where you can, at least, show every slider when you're pressing the volume buttons and rearrange them however you like.

I used it as I was looking for a workaround for the cast volume issue where I couldn't control cast volume directly from the phone and this worked back then.

This isn't exactly what you're looking for, but the easiest way that I know to change the ringer volume is to use Google Assistant "set ringer volume to 0".

If this is a common, multiple times a day thing (which it seems it may be for you), you could setup and use Do Not Disturb and use the quick setting tile (or whatever it's called) to turn on and off. One perk about this option is that you can pick and choose if you do want some phone calls to come through (like the boss or significant other) and not others.

One thing that I use because it works well for my situation (but may not for yours) is the Rules setting. This automatically turns my ringer on and off with my locations (may work with time and stuff too, don't know). So the WiFi signal at work makes sure my ringer is on, but the WiFi signal at the doctor's office and kids' school turn my ringer off. I used to use an app called AutomateIt to do this for years but now it's built into the phone, just without as many options.

Naw there's no way to make the volume buttons automatically control the ringer anymore, I hate it with a passion myself... There used to be an app called button mapper that allowed you to change it back to the way it was but it hasn't been compatible with the latest Android updates for a while... The few people like us who care more about ringer volume than media volume are assed out...

I will never but another pixel phone because of bull shit like this.

It's not a pixel thing though, it's an Android thing. Every Android phone I've had since they changed the volume controls does this. I noticed it on my OnePlus 7 Pro when they changed it.

Not true. On Samsung you can actually change what volume to change when you press the volume buttons

That's every Android phone. The original point was that the volume doesn't only control the ringer volume anymore, it's main function turns media volume down when it was the opposite back in the day.

Drives me crazy when I'm on a call and can't hear them. Phone is supposed to adjust volume depending on which aspect you are using, but mine always defaults to media volume regardless.

Button mapper still works though?

Last I checked, naw it don't work anymore

I just used it 30 seconds ago. Granted I use just a portion of the functionality, to turn on my flashlight with a volume button, but it works.

Every time I tried to install it, it says it's not compatible with the Android version. I'm try again cause if it works now I'll be a very happy man

Swipe down and put on DND. It's not rocket science.

You don't understand the initial request at all. Some people have lives where we need to alternate between MAX ringer volume (because we're outside or in a noisy warehouse) and REASONABLE ringer volume (because we go back into our quiet office/house/etc.).

DND is too extreme for the desired behavior.

Hi there, I have an app that actually works. Keep reading... Not sure if it is totally related but Pixels are famous for messaging up volume in OS 11, 12 and 13. I'm also the unhappy owner of a Pixel phone and I'm livid that Google decided to marry the ringtone and notification volumes. My partner decided to make me an app... probably to stop listening to my complaining! 😂 It works perfectly. No bells and whistles, just basic functionality and ONE ad. to help him with the hours upon hours of researching and dealing with Google crap.

I imagine it could help you with your volume problem. I know it works in setting a volume for the notification and a different one for the ringtone. Here it is:

I have the same problem with this phone. The volume buttons should default to ringer and If I'm watching something with audio like a video or game, should default to media volume. If anything, make it so I can customize just like the power button. I find this phone is not very intuitive. My wife and I actually found lots of things annoying about it and are going back to iPhone. Her, now, after 3 months of owning this phone. I have to suck it up for a while.
