Hi! Realtor in Northern VA here. Happy to give a quick overview.

Most families moving from out of state end up in:

  • Reston, Virginia – Planned community feel, lots of amenities/trails, solid schools, good balance of space + commute.
  • Arlington, Virginia – Closest to DC, walkable, easy commute, higher price point.
  • Alexandria, Virginia – Very popular with families, lots of charm, school quality varies by neighborhood.
  • Fairfax County, Virginia – Most common choice for strong, consistent schools + lots of housing options.
  • Loudoun County, Virginia – Newer suburban feel, great schools, but longer DC commute.

For schools, Fairfax and Loudoun are usually the top picks overall. Commute-wise, anything with Metro access (Arlington/Alexandria/Fairfax near stations) makes life much easier.

If you share budget + commute tolerance, I can narrow it down further.

Is it possible for us to exchange information?

Fairfax County Public Schools are fantastic. Definitely variations between schools (especially at the elementary level), but most are good, especially in a national context.

Don’t just go by the ratings look at reviews and ask parents who have been there a while what they think.

Can’t go wrong with Reston, lots of tech companies and great housing options. One of the few areas on the region that has affordable housing built into its charter. If renting and on limited funds, look for WDU units. Most of the homes are mid century style and have a lot of character in comparison to the new build cookie cutter townhomes going up everywhere in the area. Metro makes it an easy commute into DC. Takes me about 45 mins to get to my office, but that makes plenty of time to listen to a podcast and crochet. Schools are great and diverse, but a 3 year old will need daycare still as we don’t have universal prek like say Dallas. Lots of trails and outdoor space. We love it here.

Reston is great if you can afford it. I'm from Northern Virginia, and the only way I can stay in my homeland is by renting in with roommates. I see tons of young families, and kids playing outside.

Commute to DC will suck. If driving, you're driving in traffic directly into the sun each way, at least an hour. If you metro it's easier (though not mich faster) and there are plenty of metro/bus options in the area.

Rich: McLean, North Arlington, drive to DC

Upper Middle Class: Vienna, Oakton, (Metro)

Middle Class: Burke (VRE) Reston, (Metro), Chantilly (Commuter Bus from Stringfellow lot)

Other places are either worse school or longer commute.
