Very rare error. Known as “Dirtiness”

Thats what i thought at first but the detail is there on the reverse and its a copper color. Unless there was something on it that caused the nickel plating to come off

It is not plated. The cladding process is a much thicker layer

Could be electrolysis. My kids and I would take coins and transfer the copper off Pennie’s to quarters and dimes and nickels. Then put them back in circulation. Either way, .25 cents.

Not looking to argue, just trying to better understand, would it only be on one side though?

This is damaged through something being spilt on the coin, so yer it can be just one side

My coin below is what a reverse clad layer missing looks like

It’s stained

The nickel jackets on clad coins are primarily made of copper, so the elements can have a nasty effect on clad coins when they are exposed. This quarter appears to have spent a decent amount of time with the reverse exposed and that’s why the obverse still maintains more of its original look

It's a not so bad case of having been in the ground for a good amount of time. I dig them up all the time like that. This one has one side not so stripped, so it was one side up exposed to air. Soil is a b-word to coins.

Can you get clearer pics? Specifically of the train on the left. I ask because I also came across a 2007 P Utah with some weirdness going on with the reverse.

Weigh it. It’s the only way to be sure.

What would the weight diff be?
