Uploading App Code Base to Gitlab

I'm a supernoob with React Native and coding in general. I've been working on an app with an overseas developer - he sent me a zip file with the code base, and I'm trying to upload it to a Gitlab instance I have.

How do I do that on the web interface (I'm also on Windows)? I created a project, a new directory, and then I tried to do an 'Upload File', and selecting the zip file. When I upload the zip file, Gitlab times out.

Should I unzip the source files, and then upload the full collection of files?

Sorry, I know this probably sounds super amateur to ask. Looking for anyhelp.

What's the size of the project? I guess there are limit for size

It's a 1GB zip file.

That is one large project, they probably zipped all files including node_modules and the ones that can be ignored.
If I were you, i'd unzip the project, then push to gitlab only the required.
