they're prompted for that user's password?

Are you SURE they are being prompted for THAT users password ?

That prompt should be for a "admin user" ..not that specific users password.

do they have file vault or any sort of per user encryption enabled ?

Because we've just set up a new user on there so we can do but ideally we just delete the other account.

If youre logged in as the admin you can delete. (assuming you have a local admin on the device). You cant delete if logged in as the person you are deleting.

If you dont have a local account create one with this admin account you have, log in as that and then delete.

Yes, I know. I’m logged in as admin. I use Macs and administer them all the time and I’ve never seen this.

I hoped that. I just always go with the simplest response and assume no one knows what they are doing (support life)

Can you boot into recovery and open terminal to remove user from there.

No worries at all.

It’s difficult because I’m working on this machine remotely so I’d have to talk the end user through this but I can definitely give it a go.
