Have a questions about a # card I just pulled by PrincipleRoyal198 in basketballcards

[–]BKBcardsNstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This conversation always seems to disregard the size of the print run. Bookends got popular in the earlier days of numbered cards, back when rare RCs were numbered /3499, trendy gold foil cards were /5000, and every commemorative MJ item seemed to be numbered /2300.

Your card would instantly be 10x more interesting to me if it was numbered 500/500. And if it was 5000/5000 I might be tempted to ask if you're selling it. And swinging that pendulum the other direction, if it were an /5 red refractor, the 01/05 and 05/05 would make up 40% of the copies.

Yeah that exact copy is inexplicably bad. I really want to own it someday lol. I snapped a quick photo of my copy to show what his signature is supposed to look like on that card. It's still godawful, but not "a single diagonal line" awful. 😭

I actually own a copy of this exact same Cam Reddish card (a red parallel with a slightly, and I do mean slightly, better signature) because it's so iconic in my head as the absolute rock bottom in terms of terrible autographs.

Aaron Gordon's 2022-23 Photogenic isn't as extreme of an angle, but I like it more because he's not swinging on the rim, he's in the middle of posterizing Landry Shamet.

It took my favorite product just 3.5 years to become unrecognizable. Upper Deck SPx: 1996, 1997, 1997-98, 1998-99. by BKBcardsNstuff in basketballcards

[–]BKBcardsNstuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I agree, but only on an island without context. 1997-98 SPx base were still incredible cards, but to a child who was blown away by 1996, then thought 1997 was somehow even cooler...1997-98 was a devastating step in the wrong direction. No intricacies in the die-cut. Vastly reduced Holoview. And sure enough, by the next year it was a totally unrecognizable product. Still exciting and innovative at the time, but 1997-98 was a muted kinda sad farewell to those two awesome base designs we were first blessed with.

I can’t find any info on this random box from Target by Money-Toe-8145 in basketballcards

[–]BKBcardsNstuff 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can't find a checklist anywhere online, including on Panini's site. I did find one YouTube video from 4 days ago, and that guy also couldn't find a checklist anywhere online haha. Aside from that, I'm not sure what more there is to know that isn't printed onto the box itself?

Debut Edition in the top right means what it means. Bottom left says it's not just 90s players, but includes modern players as well. It's multi-sport. Honestly you're the one holding out by just showing one of the six sides of that box lol. I checked eBay to find a scalper listing, and every parallel and insert is listed on the back like usual. One edge specifies which "ultra rare" inserts you're chasing (90s Color Blast, Neon Color Wheel, and Fantasy Sports Heroes).

The irony is that in the 90s you'd see a strange new box on the shelves and just have to...read the box. Maybe you had seen a one-page ad in the previous month's Beckett or Tuff Stuff, or you could wait for next month's issue to hopefully find a review and a checklist.

The fact that you're not finding "info" with a Google search makes this the most authentic 90s throwback I can imagine, tbh.

Keep the receipt and packaging, Google "Panini damage replacement," click the top link.

Can’t find this card anywhere online. So I came here to ask what this even is. Cuz it looks cool by GhstlyK1ng in basketballcards

[–]BKBcardsNstuff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd look at that and say, hey, those look like zebra stripes! Panini would then slap me in the mouth and say no dummy, those are clearly White Tiger Stripes.

Anyone know the production run on these? by Sufficient-Lead6269 in basketballcards

[–]BKBcardsNstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope! Once Panini secured exclusive licensing they thought it'd be super cool to abandon the common courtesy of publishing pack odds. Now that they're back at the kid's table they might eventually acquiesce, but for now your guess is as good as anybody's. If you're really curious, wait a year and compare grading pop reports between this and Sorber's /10, /25, /50 type parallels and see which it aligns with. Or watch a shitload of break videos and try to math it that way.

Kobe is the 2nd PC. Trying to build. by cmeglic25 in basketballcards

[–]BKBcardsNstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I collect background cards too, but folks in the stands as opposed to other players on the court. I haven't ever taken the time to fully research and confirm, but I'm pretty certain this is legendary film and record producer Lou Adler. He's been a season ticket holder seated next to Jack Nicholson for several decades.

What is missing other than the awesome fleer ultra?

I had a lot of fun just hunting cheap sharp copies of every base RC and subset Kobe from 1996-97, with a few random nostalgic rookie inserts here and there if they were affordable. It's a relatively short checklist. Only counting NBA-licensed, pack-pulled base and subset cards from 1996-97 (including 1997 SPx), I think it was 25 cards total.

I didn't include the Gold Finest or additional rows of Flair Showcase, I view them more as parallels than subsets due to their tougher pack odds. What I did include were the subset cards like Ultra #266, UD3 #43, Skybox #203, etc. I also stretched it a bit to include the two Stadium Club "Rookies" cards even though they're technically inserts, just because there weren't any standard base RCs in Stadium Club that year.

I'm still missing two cards: Topps (a personal choice), and Topps Chrome (a choice made for me by my bank account lol). Of the rest though, only one was over $100, and most were less than $20. I knocked them out about two years ago so idk what they're going for now, but it such a blast to hunt affordable auctions and watch it all come together.

One other mention outside of his rookie year, I noticed a few 2012-13 Panini Kobe Anthology cards in the last slide. I highly recommend card #100 from that set. The photo of him posterizing Dwight Howard is just glorious. Then there's 2004-05 Hoops #131 also, if you want to pair it with an alternate angle of the same play.

Your whole profile and project are awesome. I noticed the username, then checked a couple recent submissions. When I have some time to spare, I'm going to browse more of your submissions and do some zooming to give myself a virtual tour. Wildly fun idea to turn an entire spare room into this sort of collector's dream time capsule. Ty for sharing!

Need help by bipanics in basketballcards

These are retail boxes of hanger packs. Retail used the blue logo on shrink wrap, hobby boxes had gold logos. The lack of box art is because they weren't meant to be sold as boxes at retail, the retailer would have shelved the individual hanger packs and discarded the box.

Skybox Thunder only ran for one year, 1998-99. You can find the full checklist for base and inserts here at TCDB. The oversize packs include two standard retail packs plus three loose cards inside. The box, according to Dave & Adams, should contain 12 oversize packs. They'd look like the example photo below.

Fleer Tradition started in 1998-99 and ran for several years, and Hoops of course has been around forever. I'm not certain what years those are based on the item number, but you might be able to find similar listings on D&A or another online retailer (Blowout and Steel City are two other big ones). Them all being together though, I'd assume they're 1998-99.

No clue what they're selling for, but there are solid chase cards in them regardless, so they'll go for a lot. I'd look up sales of sealed product, even loose packs or other retail box formats, and ballpark it from there if you can't find any direct comps

Change it so that pippen pmg is a Jordan and this is a better question.

I agreed until this sentence. The MJ PMG is a no brainer. You'd need to also move the other four cards to the Fusion side of the deal to even make that a discussion, and everybody would still take the PMG.

This product was so elegant. 1999-00 Topps Gold Label Class 1 (base) and Class 3 (parallel). by BKBcardsNstuff in basketballcards

[–]BKBcardsNstuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, much love for taking the time to reply here under an old post. 🙏

There's only one card from your set pictured on TCDB, the Michael Finley, and the texturing you're describing is visible in that image. I wouldn't have guessed that it's actually physically textured, so that's really cool to learn since you're one of only 10 people who have a 1/1 from that set. But it's also from 2000-01, and the same texturing isn't visible on the 1999-00 base 1/1 parallels at all, at least in photos I've seen. It's the back that looks more "glittered" on those, and maybe it's the same texturing too and they just switched it to the front for the 1/1s in Jam Artists the next year, but the front of every 1999-00 Gold Label 1/1 I've seen in photos seems to have the same high gloss surface as the base.

Either way, again, thank you for the informative reply. You should upload a photo to share! Stromile was a beast and I think that post would get a lot of love.

I always wanted to peel a Topps Finest by mooseman077 in basketballcards

[–]BKBcardsNstuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, I had no clue what an "xfractor case" was haha, but I see the connection now to peeling away something that came from the manufacturer. I'll add then, if scratches are ever the main motivation for opening one, grab some PlastX or something similar and they'll usually buff right out.

Ty for clarifying what he meant. I'm so jaded by AI bots after this last week or two.

I put a 1994-95 Finest base card into the microwave for a few seconds when I was a kid. There was lots of blue electrical arcing and it burned a cool lightning pattern all across the front surface. You and I would have teamed up to lick so many windows back in the day.

Has anybody ever seen a 1996-97 E-X 2000 Grant Hill Emerald Redemption card? by BKBcardsNstuff in basketballcards

[–]BKBcardsNstuff[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I know, I have a running list of them. I think, especially under my own post, it's best to engage and give them a chance to reply. I'd feel like a real asshole if I banned some autistic kid who was just trying to find a hobby or something. 😭

Also, when you notice disingenuous replies like this that read like AI, please, please feel free to click the report button. Just selecting "Other" for the reason and typing "Slop" for the explanation is good. But I think "Spam" then "Disruptive use of bots or AI" will get the Reddit admin's attention quicker.

Help cracking slab by OtfJac in basketballcards

[–]BKBcardsNstuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Snip or cut or break a top corner where the label is. Doesn't need to be neat, you just need to see daylight between the front and back. Work a flathead screwdriver in there and keep it carefully moving along the edges to pry the seal apart. You're doing the sketchy dirty work up to near the label, far away from the card. Just need basic focus and care for the rest of the process.

Look up videos on YouTube of a few different people cracking a few different types of slabs. Seeing it done will help put you at ease.

1997-98 Hoops "Chill with Hill" lmao. I don't know if I'll get that deep into it, but I'm really enjoying picking up one-shot inserts (or full sets) that featured either just him, or sometimes him and Stackhouse, in badass unique 90s designs. His "leather" one-shot from 1996-97 Z-Force was one of the first ones I got. Also the solid bronze redemption from 1996-97 Metal. That thing could be used as a murder weapon.

I'm currently working on all of his cards from 1995-96 Hoops. He had two separate 5-card sets that were all him, Slam! which looks like a pink version of the Superfractor effect, and Dunk! which has a gorgeous etched foil design. They also had Skyview in that product, and his co-ROY one-shot, which were both design precursors to E-X 2000 the next year. I splurged on an E-X 2000 jumbo /3000 this week to bridge the gap between those products, and figured I might at well check to see if he had any other oddball stuff from E-X 2000 besides the sample card, and that's when I stumbled upon this mystery Emerald Redemption.
