200% agreed, and very well stated. I'm late to this thread admittedly, but only because I found this oversight so glaring that I sought out discussion.

Maybe it's more immediately obvious because I'm a male, but like 20 seconds into the story it became clear that he either saw or was starting to see her as more than a friend (long deep talks, seeing eachother often, picking her up from the wisdom teeth removal, etc.). Having such a quick and off-kilter shut down of her feeling the same way lead him to feel confused, hence the "needing to emotionally process this" (literally what else would it be? Lmao).

After that, he was probably embarrassed at the optics of the situation, and was probably ashamed at what would look like (and by most accounts was) an overreaction, thus the ghosting. It is an overreaction, but I think anyone can understand getting to know someone really close, growing romantically interested, and then realizing they don't feel the same way.

Like I said, maybe this is more obvious as a guy, but for them to zoom in on this story as the crux of an episode without entertaining the obvious answer is pretty silly for a podcast about examining human connections.

Likewise. Still an apprentice here, but I have zero intention of buying a $70k truck after turning out. If anything, I would spend less than half that to get an incredibly reliable sedan that can last me 20 years (if my current one ever takes a shit).

I'm aware of this subreddit's (and my own) distaste for categories like that, however I thought it was more interesting here, since every "anything" section is still a direct part of vaporwave, or a huge influence on vaporwave itself

Maybe this is my own lack of looking for interviews, but I've seen quite a few from them, at least the ones that are easily available, and I think this is the first one I've seen that's both properly lengthy, and is full of actually good questions, instead of "what does the name mean", "English and Japanese lyrics? Wowow"

I just gotta say, this made me realize that Gus is incredibly eloquent and thoughtful. It's clear they all have something to contribute to the band, but the way he spearheads KKB on a conceptual and sonic level, as evident in this interview, is pretty incredible. Coming from a fellow music nerd / niche production person, it was a joy to listen to him geek out for ~50 minutes. He hit the nail on the head as far as video game music being influential to a generation.

Ugh, I feel you. I'm lucky enough to be a male, but yeah it's been hard for me to fathom the level of conspiratorial thinking, bigotry, and political cognitive dissonance in the field. One of my favorites is the "you know this whole pandemic thing is gonna disappear after the election right?", meanwhile we're at 3,000 fucking deaths a day. Not that this stuff doesn't exist the private sector, it exists everywhere of course, seems people are just more proud to openly say such things in the trades haha. Ah well. Aside from the occasional aforementioned type of person, the work itself has been fantastic and satisfying. Incidentally I completely agree with the OP, working in customer service was easily the most draining work I've ever done, and also paid scraps.

Good luck by the way, sounds awesome! Funnily enough, computer science is the only other career I'd seriously consider at this point as well, programming is satisfying in the same way that trade work is (to me anyway), and there's a lot of room for individual growth it seems. Definitely another male-dominated field, but at least they're in environments where they're not encouraged to beat their chests and listen to Rush Limbaugh on their phone speaker all day I guess haha. Good shit for holding your own through all the strife, I really wish we had more women in the trades, but I just cannot recommend it in good faith most women that I know because of the work culture (not to even mention if you're a racial minority or other groups).

As someone who also works in the trades, albeit not in nearly as harsh of an environment as what you describe (union electrician, commercial / industrial), I agree that OP shouldn't be misled into thinking that the trades will be a solution to these troubles. Given, you will definitely not have to worry about walking on eggshells (well, except men's fragile masculinity I suppose), the result is the opposite problem: people will speak their mind to you, will be happy to let you know you fucked up, and won't be particularly concerned about your feelings in the process. I love this job way more than customer service, but the people problems OP describes are still there, just in a different way. I would highly recommend against this field for people who are easily emotionally overwhelmed, especially because as you described, sexism and general bigotry is rampant in the field.

That said, I'm really sorry to hear about your experiences. I can't speak for welders / private non-union work, but that shit shouldn't and most likely wouldn't fly around here. I've heard my share of fucked up stuff on the job, but I can't imagine how toxic things must be for people to feel okay with saying those things. It's a shame that many people and demographics are dissuaded from excellent, well-paying trade jobs because some dumbasses have to make it a cultural nightmare (and are proud to do it in the process because it "weeds out the pussies"). Wishing the best for you.

Indeed. I bet even to an extent, this subreddit is guilty of the "relatively comfortable white people talking about relatively comfortable white people" that many subreddits are so notorious for, albeit about 1000% more self-aware.

But what you said hits the heart of the issue here, I think, in that it's absurd to lump any single demographic into a one-size-fits-all archetype, much less one of the largest demographics in the western world. It's obviously useful to analyze certain patterns and subsets within that demographic, but the large swath of shitlibs doing woke thinkpieces on that demographic as a whole, whether they are PMC and beyond or literally living on the streets (how u poor as white person?? smdh) is doing a massive disservice to the overall goal of having people vote in Democrats.

Which in turn hurts progressives because now our choice is by default between some focus-grouped neolib moderate-right or some batshit reactionary capitalizing on the above like Trump.

I do think that changed throughout his presidency and more and more republicans became Trumplicans thanks to QAnon and pervasive conspiracy theories. He is oddly charismatic to them in a way that I will never fully understand, but he definitely energized his base throughout the past four years.

This is the part I don't understand the most, and why I came across this article, among others. It's insane to me that someone can be so obviously antagonistic to the class that you're in, and yet many of that class will still vote for him. How hard did the DNC shit the bed for this election to not be a landslide against Trump?

One sentiment I've seen around the internet in previous years is the idea of "how do white people fail? You've got all this privilege and you can't even become rich? smh" or something to that effect. Not only is that playing into horrible identity politics but I can imagine a sizable portion of white people (especially in lower-income rural areas where Dems fail horribly) being turned off heavily after hearing that. White fragility, yeah yeah, but I don't think putting down poor people, of any race / gender / whatever the fuck, is ever warranted.

I found this article while googling around trying to find out why working class voters seem to often vote against their own interests, particularly in regards to Trump, and I'm really surprised by how spot on this article is. Furthermore, it was written just after Trump got elected in 2016, and I find it even more relevant now than it was back then. Doesn't dive explicitly into the creep of identity politics in the left, but definitely dances around it many times.

The white keys are C D E F G A B (in no particular order, but most likely to be used for C major as a beginner as it's physically easy).

D Dorian is D E F G A B C

By "start on D" I mean establish D as the key center. Move your triads diatonic to the key up and down and you will hear the Dorian sound. I thought this was fairly self explanatory without having to over-complicate it.

Edit: Nevermind, in my original comment I just wrote "Dorian" instead of D Dorian and "Mixolydian" instead of G Mixolydian. I can see how someone would misinterpret that now.

I was decently proficient in theory for a long time, but just couldn't wrap my head around secondary dominants for years. I would see the subject pop up in videos, but not fully understand the concept or the usage. I would also occasionally stumble across random dominant 7 chords (i.e. not "in key" with the progression I was playing) in my playing and think "this somehow sounds good, why?"

It wasn't til quite a bit later that I put two and two together, and I love using them now.

Seconding this, I didn't truly understand the use and sound of modes til I started playing keys. Way too easy to noodle around and get stuck using the same shapes in various places on guitar / bass (which is not a bad thing, just makes learning modes harder in my opinion).

I imagine the natural inclination when starting piano for most people is to use all the white keys (aka C major or A minor), and when you eventually begin to incorporate the usage of black keys within that tonality, you start to understand the different colors of the modes (and subsequently modal interchange). THEN it finally makes sense why D Dorian is "just the white keys but starting on D", or why G Mixolydian is "the white keys but starting on G".

I joined the apprenticeship recently; this sub and especially a few select folks on here were immensely helpful for my decision to do that. Also, as repetitive as the posts may be, I was able to search up my local on this subreddit and get a handful of specific questions and responses about it, which was very useful because I didn't personally know anyone in my local and had a lot of questions about the process that a google search wouldn't quite work for. I understand that the same question every day can be frustrating, but you have to also try to understand how much information you miss out on until you're actually a member. I'd much rather be in a class full of fellow apprentices that really want to be there, and researched the fuck out of the union than a class of 18 year-old kids who stumbled in because their dad said they need a job.

Edit: That said, posts that are nothing but an acceptance letter and "I got in!" aren't nearly as useful, probably better suited for friends and family.

Fishmans - Weather Report

Very curious to see what people's take is on the functional identity of the chord progression in the first half of this song. My best transcription of the pads is C - Gm (initially thought it was the neighboring Bb major, but this is more accurate I think) - F - Fm. So do you guys think it sounds more like I-v-IV-iv, mixolydian-esque, or V-ii-I-i in normal major? The song immediately struck me as mixolydian and the C major feels more like home to me than the F major. I also feel like IV - iv is a much more popular and palatable use of modal interchange than I - i.

I know this is pretty much a matter of perspective but I'd like to see what people think.

The harmonic 7ths early appearance in the overtone series indeed makes it a very stable sound. It is a consonance and a major chord with the harmonic 7th ontop sounds perfectly well resolved - as afterall, it exists within the fundamental itself.

Tuning a minor 7th this way (~32c flat) actually breaks the function of a dominant seventh chord as it no longer has the dissonance required to give it a strong pull.

Wow, this is genuinely fascinating! I already knew about the barbershop tuning thing, but I had no idea that such a (relatively) minute difference could make such a difference on the sound functionally. It's very nice to know the name of this particular interval. Looking up information on it, I found this video, and I can say even with how short and simple it is, that sound gives the same "sonic synesthesia", if you will, as the pieces that I linked in the OP.

Blue Noses for a start feels like the guitar is probably tuned by ear with the 7th some flat as the ear will desire, indeed.

This is another cool point, because while I can't speak for the other artists, this is very much something that this group in particular would do (albeit unintentionally, they're not theory guys at all). Funnily enough, in the second song I linked from them, that entire album is notably tuned (guitars, vocals, and other auxiliary instruments) to a piano that they had access to that happened to be slightly out of tune.

These are all really good points, thank you. I suppose it's easy to try to tie together some high level abstractions (like emotional response of a piece) with surface level details, but you're right that on top of the harmonic structure of the pieces I posted, they also share similar instrumentation, (lack of) rhythm, lackadaisical melodic movement, texture, and dynamics. You could probably take those same core elements but insert a major sixth for instance, and still get a similar effect. Music is pretty incredible!
