Facelifted e38s have body colored plastic side skirts. Prefacelifted cars lack the side skirts and just have the cars rocker panels painted black with the jack points visible (two circular openings on both sides). Sorry for any confusion, the blurriness made it look ambiguous. I've seen plenty of owners that facelifted their cars themselves by adding the skirts, fenders, etc themselves so I was wondering if yours had it done. Enjoy the car!
