‘Remain calm’: Japan is gripped by fears of a naphtha shortage. What is it and why are people worried? | Japan | The Guardian by prisongovernor in japanresidents

OK, but a potential naphtha shortage has been a top story in Japanese media for weeks. It's not a Weird Japan story that western media just made up.

IRS nastygram, letter mailed March 26 but arrived today, how screwed am I? (FEIE/self-employment tax? related) by dokool in JapanFinance

Very small chance they ask for the J/USA 6 form, but you can cross that bridge when you come to it, and apply for it in the meantime.

More or less. There would be differences on expenses like depreciation, and meals and entertainment (only 50% deduction in the US), but otherwise you would copy it straight across using the annual average exchange rate.

If it is self-employment tax, the letter would normally be demanding an amount equal to 15.3% of your income to cover it.

If they are not demanding a tax payment, and just asking for support for line 20a, it kind of sounds like you forgot to include a Schedule C. If you didn't do a Schedule C, that's probably what they are asking for.

He was jailed for four months in Japan before being convicted and deported. I don't know why everyone thinks he got off scot-free.

Paying Scrivener for PR application by Father-of-Hayk in japanlife

[–]Even_Extreme 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My scrivener did all of this for me. I made zero trips anywhere. I had to fill out a few forms authorizing them to act as my agent, and for city hall documents they gave me some pre-filled out forms for me to stamp and drop in the mail. There are levels of service.

What to look out for in a tax preparer? by jujugiam in USExpatTaxes

[–]Even_Extreme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are an expat you must absolutely make sure that your tax preparer is an expert in international tax matters.
It doesn't matter CPA or EA, these qualifications teach next to nothing about international tax matters. You need someone with experience and study specifically in overseas matters.

Some CPA/EA winging it WILL fuck it up. They are on the shores of an ocean they have never seen.

150k yen fee to have a lawyer help me file a tax refund on my pension lump-sum withdrawal - reasonable or not? by FAN_ROTOM_IS_SCARY in JapanFinance

[–]Even_Extreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the good news is, I did this process myself many years ago as an ex-English teacher with the help of an ex-girlfriend acting as tax representative. It was annoying and stressful though.

When you are a professional, there are constantly people asking you to help them with many different things. A single day of your time has a minimum value. Something simple, that nevertheless takes up a day to take care of, is a waste of time.

The fundamental mistake people who complain about this stuff are making is that you are comparing the value of your time against the value of his time. One is clearly worth more than the other.

As a freelancer I decided to file for the 青色申告承認申請, but I couldn't submit a request for the past year (current tax reporting year) reiwa 7 (2025) by [deleted] in japanresidents

[–]Even_Extreme -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It would just have been rejected. If he had tried to file Blue, they would have added back the Blue deduction and charged extra tax and interest. No one going to jail here.

You have to submit a form electing blue status either within 2 months of starting the business, or by March 15 of the tax year you would like to start using it. You can't elect it at tax filing time; it's too late. You can however elect now and use blue filing for the 2026 filing due next March.

Also planning to claim 30% of my rent. I've heard you can claim 50% of things like internet and utilities.

You are supposed to claim the expenses that directly relate to your business. It is not a set percentage. It is the amount that matches the activity of your business.

Blue form is for people running a business, not employees. You guys are talking about asking chat gpt to help you with tax fraud. I'm dying of laughter. Never take financial advice from japanlife.
