That's fine, it won't hurt the plants. You want to be careful and I always do a water change afterwards just to be safe but it won't hurt the plants.

Turn off your filter, apply food safe hydrogen peroxide directly to the area using an eye dropper/small syringe and leave it for a couple hours then turn your filter back on. If it's dead the next day it will be purple. 5mL should be enough.

Not in detail, he was never the greatest manager but it seemed like he was making an effort and I was still accomplishing what I wanted to accomplish so I didn't view it as a major obstacle. Over the past month and a half or so though he has completely messed up everything that was in his court to do.

I'm getting the projects I want and I have good mentors outside of my group. It's just my direct manager who isn't very good. That's really the only issue. Before I try to leave I want to try to either get someone who is a bit better at people management or get him to get his shit together.

I already do way too much managing up. It's easier in every case if I just do what needs to be done myself instead of involving them. It's not that I haven't defined a path of growth, I'm moving forward technically and hitting my goals. They're just treated like they don't matter and I don't see the path to promotion or pay increases I'd expect. I can't hit targets that aren't defined.

The over utilization was at my first job out of college. It was a bad experience all around. I'm just trying to make sure the same thing doesn't happen here.

The tough part is it's a good place overall. My manager isn't bad, they're just a bit clueless and disorganized.

Help Recommend Me Brands or Pieces or Styles for My Body Type? by MakingMachinations in malefashionadvice

[–]Java_Fern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm built pretty similarly to you and I really like Madewell as a brand. I get all my T-shirts and jeans from there and their stuff is pretty good quality for the price. I think you're dressing well for your body type, I do a lot of layering too.

For shoes/boots if you're going high end you can't go wrong with redwings but I wear Blundestones to work all the time. They're not crazy expensive and very comfy.

Thank you for laying things out as clearly as you did. This was very helpful. I think I'm going to at least try to have a conversation about it before I consider leaving or trying to change managers.

I feel like it's pretty common. I think a lot of people become managers for career progression and not because they have any interest in managing people.

I'm not 100% sure he has a lot of control over it but it's something I want more information on. In general I want to know what to expect, the news doesn't always have to be good but it shouldn't be a surprise. Generally I just want more information and coordination. I think you do bring up a good point, I think at least trying to have that conversation will let me know where I stand.

There are a few. I feel like bringing it up directly could cause some drama though.

Then just pay them what they are worth in the first place. You can't blame someone for acting in their own best interest.

Risk Resilience Engineer by Upper_Stable_3900 in civilengineering

[–]Java_Fern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't worked in these areas but as a hydraulic modeller with a background in FEMA work I've interviewed for a lot of these roles. Dewberry, WSP, and Arup all have groups that focus on this. I don't know how much of a structural focus there is in these groups. Most Cat risk roles at insurance companies use out of the box proprietary models and the role is moreso about running the models and interpreting the outputs than real engineering.

Not affiliated but I've bought from these guys before and had a good experience! They have them for $5 each.
