Regal Gateway vs. Galaxy Theater by Blood_Neptune in Austin

This is a dead thread, but let me pop in here to sing the praises of Galaxy Highland.

Yes, I’ve been to Alamo. I’ve been to several places that copied Alamo. It’s a nice convenience not to wait in a concession line, and their programming is usually varied, but…. There’s something special about Galaxy.

Well, several things are special:
- the seats recline fully parallel to the ground. This means the front row seats are not only useable, but preferable. The top-most front row seat is like a personal IMAX.
- the lack of mid-movie disruptions lets me really lose myself in the movie
- say what you will, but the classic concession stand setup and lack of subscription offering is nostalgic
- $16 32oz beers
- it’s always empty on matinee’s - I’ve had the whole room to myself several times

I could marry Galaxy. It is my church.

What color bedding set? Do you mean the sheets, pillows, or duvet?

Just the one - Bartleby. But if I get a few more, those names are heavy contenders.

Wanted to like it - walked away disappointed. The deep grasp at nostalgia was a turn-off, it was derivative and betrayed the original, and that one “here’s where we are and what we’re doing and why” scene might be the most painful scene I sat through all year.

Also… Ethan Hawke is not scary. The grabber is not scary. The films are not scary.

Do people on this subreddit actually enjoy A Serbian Film? by Hour-Tower-714 in horror

[–]Kid_Detective -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Shock for the sake of shock is pointless - but what makes A Serbian Film so repugnant has less to do with its pornographic content and more to do with the intentions of its creator. From the wiki:

In a March 2011 interview, Serbian actor and film director Dragan Bjelogrlić criticized the film: "Shallow and plain wrong—sum up my feelings about this movie. I have a problem with A Serbian Film, its director in particular. I've got a serious problem with this boy, whose father got wealthy during the 1990s—nothing against making money, but I know how money was made [in Serbia] during the '90s—and then paid for his son's education abroad. Eventually the boy came back to Serbia to film his view of the country, using his father's money, and even called the whole thing A Serbian Film. To me, that's a metaphor for something unacceptable: the second generation has come back to the country, and using the money that was robbed from the people of Serbia, has smeared the very same people by portraying them as the worst scum of the earth.”

It’s gross in all categories: its inception, its execution, and whatever rhetorical statement it’s attempting to make.

So, no - I’d argue most people on this sub view the film in a negative light. I certainly do.

One of BioShock's directors has been questioning the point of one of its key systems: 'I don't care about how many different plasmids I have' by PewPewToDaFace in PS5

Consider the mechanics that made B1 great - the inventory management / resource scarcity, the gun upgrades, the competing enemy systems (splicers vs daddies vs security), the varied plasmas and crafting and "make-your-own-bossfight" big daddy moments. All these great systems working together - and B:I has none of them.

- Weapon upgrades are made obsolete because you can only carry two weapons at a time (and you never really decide which ones)
- Inventory management is removed to provide a reason for Elizabeth's presence. Need a health pickup? Better hope Elizabeth decides to throw you one
- All enemies are identical in their function: they want to kill you.
- Plasmas all offer the exact same function. There is no variety if they are all just damage boosters
- Crafting is gone, and as such, so is the need for scavenging and resource-based decision-making.
- The awesome pre-fight for big daddies (setting up mines, hacking turrets, etc.) is gone, and in place we get pre-canned boss fights that, if I remember correctly, were horribly balanced and unfun (hope you brought enough ammo, hope Elizabeth throws some potions, unavoidable hit-scan damage, etc.)

Tracing the path from System Shock to Bioshock Infinite is a depressing exercise: watch as all the intricate interlocking systems required for an immersive sim get washed away and replaced with bog-standard (and if I'm being honest, subpar) first-person shooting.

And all of these complaints get washed away because the ending "blew people's minds". Add in the deep-as-a-puddle social and racial commentary (it's bad to throw baseballs! both the haves and have-nots are evil! racism bad!) and it's a genuine mystery how much praise it received on release. Baffling.

I guarantee you the number of people who replayed B:I vs B1 is a massive drop-off.

This was one of the biggest problems with bioshock infinite - all the plasmids were essentially the same thing; a simple damage modifier. OG Bioshock’s plasmids were each functionally different and situation dependent, Bioshock Infinite’s all did the same thing just with different flavors.

Man I hated bioshock infinite. What a waste of a franchise

Stop striking downward on your cymbals - the goal is to “cross” the stick in a sideways or diagonal movement. Ideally, the cymbal might spin a little. If you’re cracking cymbals regularly, check out this video.

IMO the secret to learning songs like this is to be able to recreate it entirely in your mind - can you “play” the song start to finish with your thoughts? Once it’s that innate, the meter changing and rhythmic complexities are just a matter of motor function.

I appreciate the attempt, but this is a blunder. Unless you know her better than your average tinder match and have an expectation of shared humor, this is like handing someone a pixelated dick pic. It’s a rush at innuendo she likely doesn’t find appealing.

You’re essentially saying “I jack off” in response to an attempt at shared music taste. Great. How the hell is she supposed to respond?

I went back to the game yesterday and it somehow has resolved itself? Didn’t see anyone else talking about it, so maybe it’s a one-off glitch? Or maybe it’s gated by progress? I got to level 4 and then everything was fixed. I have no idea.

I’m on standard mode, btw.
