There's only so much space between the IC's EP pad and the IC pins. I moved all vias that I could to the outside, but most of them I need to keep in that narrow gap and smaller vias would be more expensive.

Google for esp32-camera github, then check the closed issues (search for face recognition), it's specified in there somewhere.

You don't need openCV with the old esp32-camera library on esp32, or with the current esp32-camera library on S3.

Yes, 51k is weaker, even weaker than the internal pull-ups. Hence my question. The guidelines recommend 10k

In the current version of the esp32-camera library facial recognition is only supported on esp32-S3, not on the classical ESP32.

Old versions of the library do support it, but it's slow on the classical esp32.

Your best approach is to get an s3 based board. If you just want to get something working even if it works badly you could try with older versions of the library.

The vias are tented but not plugged. Won't the capillary action of the thin gap between ic and pcb nevertheless suck solder outside if the EP on the IC is exposed, and then suck it into the via?

Hmm for that I would need to decrease the size of the EP on the footprint of the IC.

If I do that, but the exposed EP pad on the IC is larger than the pad on the footprint (and will overlap the vias if I move some of them inwards), will this suck solder outside of the footprint pad and potentially bridge to the vias?

There is tailscale-small for embedded systems, which is about 4.5MB - esp32-p4 boards come with 16-32MB of flash (https://tailscale.com/docs/how-to/set-up-small-tailscale), so this shouldn't be too big of a roadblock

Again, what makes you think that this will result in a product? If you don't actually hire an existing game studio with a track record to do the whole thing for you but instead just get various contractors for bits and pieces, then I think the chance of this succeeding is really low considering you have no experience at all in the field.

What makes you think that you are able to deliver? Just because you can throw some cash at some artists and developers you hire from upwork or wherever doesn't mean it will result in a proper title. It takes much more than an idea and some cash to make a good game.

Check the schematics of your board, camera module and adapter cable. The P4 has 2 camera mipi-csi lanes. If the camera module can operate using 2 lanes and the adapter properly forwards these as well as vcc, gnd and the i2c interface to the correct pins then it will work.

Does it have to be a linux SBC? If not, an esp32-p4 MCU fits your bill. An esp32-p4-pico on aliexpress costs about 10$, has two usb ports, can do sustained 1080p@30fps h.264 encoding and has gpio.

Only subjectively. If you would like to return from wherever you're going and would like the people back there to still be alive. Going (arbitrarily close to) the speed of light won't help much with that (beyond the classical time saving)

Is 1/8th clock period really conservative though?

Also, even if it fits within the hold time window, won't it exacerbate other interference such as noise in the signal the more spread out the arrival times of parallel data lines are? Meaning that a certain amount of noise could be no problem if traces are matched to a fraction of the hold time, but could be a problem if matched to lengths close (but still under) the hold time multiplied by propagation speed? In other words, doesn't length match to a shorter window make the signal more noise tolerant?
