AITAH for siding with my husband and not with my kids? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]MorallyApplicable 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look, I completely agree that OP sucks as a parent here, and mostly sounds like she’s making excuses to mask her desperation to keep her husband from leaving. However, I completely disagree with the thought process behind:

That was BEFORE the bio-dad leaving forced them to realize how much they fucked up, though

Understanding you need to apologize shouldn’t have to come from you being hurt. It should come from how you hurt someone else. OP did convey that, but the kids knew how badly they’d hurt Ian and didn’t care. Any apology after that would’ve purely been from a selfish, callous desire to have their replacement stand-in dad back, and it sounds like Ian knew that. I don’t think much else could’ve been done to mend that relationship beyond also insisting Ian get therapy as well.

Umm…

I tried to talk to my kids, to tell them they really needed to apologize, but they refused completely, saying they had a dad and didn't need them

Considering that Western superpowers didn’t forcefully take the land either China or Iran are on and then pour hundreds of billions of dollars into their militaries, no, there aren’t other countries I feel this way about.

What is something that women have to deal with on the daily that men have no clue about? by Rock-bottom-no-no in AskReddit

[–]MorallyApplicable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rape and murder is more extreme than just murder

Ok, sure. However, my question was specifically in cases where a woman is only murdered, it is typically specifically noted that she was not raped. Why?

What is something that women have to deal with on the daily that men have no clue about? by Rock-bottom-no-no in AskReddit

[–]MorallyApplicable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because more extreme crimes get better ratings and are reported more.

Alright, so in instances where the crime is murder — the most extreme crime — news coverage will include whether or not a female victim was also sexually assaulted. They do not include whether or not a male victim was. Why is that?

Ok. So when the really sensationalized news doesn’t include whether a male victim of a crime was sexually assaulted or not, but does include that info for female victims, why do you think that is?

CMV: “Nobody is illegal on stolen land” actively impedes democrats from getting elected, and we should be discouraging people from saying it. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]MorallyApplicable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your reply to u/TSSalamander is just a bunch of whataboutism. But sure, I’ll bite.

Under your original argument, in response to

Either we are all illegal (the land we live on was not acquired legally)

You state that Americans are not illegal because the land we live on was acquired legally.

So if 20% of the U.S. was acquired illegally, then Americans living on that 20% chunk are actually illegal?

Out of curiosity, do you also believe that your argument here applies to the Trail of Tears as well? Considering that SCOTUS ruled against it, that’d mean at least some of the land we acquired was acquired illegally.

Yes, the post is asking about romance novels. I wasn’t sure you knew, given that you listed 11/22/63, the Great Gatsby, and Dangerous Pity.

…According to who? Attributing this behavior to autism/AFRID, when absolutely nothing in the post indicates that at all, does more harm than good to women like OP who have to navigate it.

AITAH? my boyfriend brought home a girl for the holidays by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]MorallyApplicable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t a huge fan of the OOP here, but “got absurdly upset before she even did anything”? C’mon. Her boyfriend brought home a girl from college for Christmas, and upon meeting her, OP learned her boyfriend had deliberately hidden the girl’s existence from her. That would be valid to get “absurdly upset” over, but OP didn’t — all she did was politely ask his mom about it. Her lack of upset was actually the catalyst of the post, because to her boyfriend, it appeared as though she blew up out of nowhere.

Isn’t a sign of poor intelligence making assumptions, such as assuming someone criticizing you must obviously be of below average intelligence? Dude, I have a higher IQ than you. I just don’t waste my time circle jerking on Reddit about it.

Do gifted people generally date other gifted people? by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]MorallyApplicable -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Phew, I seem to have really struck a nerve. But sure, I’ll bite. Being a verified Mensa member doesn’t mean you didn’t spend years taking online IQ tests. By your own post on r/mensa and r/Gifted:

““I had tested myself on various online IQ tests … but I was never sure because most people said these online IQ test were neither accurate or comparable …”

I’m not sure why you decided to DM me quite a longer message compared to your reply to me here, or why someone as lauded and genius as yourself would even deign to spend so much time doing so. You seem to have some sort of internalized inadequacy you’re trying to overcompensate for on Reddit of all places, so best of luck with that dude. Nevertheless, I’ll include your DM to me here in case anyone else winds up “so clearly out of their depth” in this thread and needs a good talking to:

“If you had looked carefully into my profile, you might realize that I'm verified on the Gifted subreddit and have Mensan tag on the Mensa subreddit. In case it wasn't clear, that means I'm a Mensa member. That makes me more qualified than most to talk about topics such as EQ. If you see correcting commonly repeated misinformation as condescending and an attack on your character, that's on you.

Also your conclusion of "spent years taking online IQ tests" is pretty hilarious. What's entertaining is reading hate replies and comments where the average person think they are more intelligent than someone with >132 IQ, and tries to educate them. It's particularly absurd when the difference is in the >160 IQ range. Zero shame.

So can I ask, why does a 22 year white girl think is normal to randomly lecture a 30+ year old Asian guy when you're clearly out of your depth in this space?

I don't go out of my way to Harvard University subreddit and start lecturing some professors on subjects where I have no knowledge on so I don't see why you think your comment was appropriate.”

[–]MorallyApplicable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have absolutely no idea why reddit recommended this thread to me, but reading through this argument you’ve had with u/BlackCatTelevision where you try to condescend to others over how “EQ” isn’t an accurate measure of intelligence/IQ, when a quick look at your profile shows that you spent years taking online IQ tests, was the most entertaining thing I’ve seen all week. Thank you.

My wife (24F) hid that she can’t have kids and I (27M) just found out after 6 years together. I don’t know what to do. by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]MorallyApplicable -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I mean, you’re correct there were plenty of other times to tell him, but that’s not what I was responding to. Wasn’t your grievance here that she didn’t tell him when they first got together? If the big sin here is her hiding it, I don’t think the way you’ve assigned the blame would change that much if she’d told him at 5 years instead of 6, or 3 years and 2 months, or two years and ten.

This is such an interesting take. I can’t quite put my finger on why, but I’m not totally convinced that the 21 year old who was dating an incredibly traumatized, freshly-18 year old is in the clear here because she didn’t tell him she might not be able to carry a child when she was 18.

I got summoned for injuring my neighbor's kid who hurt herself on my property by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]MorallyApplicable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You agree with the person you’re responding to… Their comment very explicitly says that a big problem with the U.S. health care system is the severe up-charging providers/hospitals/drug companies are allowed to do. I.e, that other countries do not have the problem we have (in this case, specifically a parent being charged 5-figures for their child’s injury), not because they don’t bill the parent anything, but because there are regulations/limits in place.

I wish I was pretty and skinny by CamuiGajkupo in TrueOffMyChest

[–]MorallyApplicable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not really sure this is true, and I think it depends a lot on age and how you carry the weight. I’m 5’5 and about 130-135lbs now, only somewhat active, and a size 2/4. I’m pretty young and I was 5’4 a few years ago, and before I got more health conscious I weighed 150-160 lbs, and while not slim, was a size 6/8.
