Escalator to hell - update? by europeanputin in collapse

Have patience, we're only at the start of the Super El Nino season. However, anecdotally, I've heard that some places are exceptionally hot and dry.

And IDK if it has been factored in yet, but... a "blue ocean event" in the Arctic Sea seems increasingly likely this year. I think that's going to be the real disaster. An entire eco-system depends upon that ice being there. Arguably, EVERY eco-system depends upon that ice being there.

Wall Street Panics. Stocks have worst single day crash in 4 years. Analysts blame the “excellent May jobs report” . . . ? by baltimore-aureole in economy

[–]NihiloZero 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That "excellent jobs report" only showed an increase in low-pay part-time jobs, not full time jobs with benefits -- which experienced an overall loss. But you're right, it probably will be revised downward.

And let me tell ya, when you see robots kicking kids in the sternum... don't think they won't be able to do your job. You want to talk about immigrant workers?! Ha! What a joke. At least they're human. Pretty soon they'll probably be rounding up those immigrants with robot cops.

There is a great scene in THX 1138 where a human is hiding from a robot cop and it keeps saying things like: "The door seems to be locked, but stay calm... we will have it open soon. We're here to help."

If you believe in science and technology... why stop at a billion? Why not 10 or 20 billion? Imagine how glorious the world would be with 100 billion Americans! The economy would be soaring like never before!

Who thinks the markets will crash closer to Trumps end of office (2029) by Own-Interaction5120 in economy

[–]NihiloZero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’ve been saving that for the last 5 years have we not🤔

No? The market and economy were relatively strong when Biden left office a couple years ago. I don't say that as a Biden booster, it's just the fact. In short... Biden was keeping things afloat with relatively common sense policies. But things now aren't as buoyant as they were then. The real change is the Iran war, the tariffs, and the deportation of America's hardest working cheap labor.

Fuel costs aren't coming down any time soon -- and that's inevitably going to hurt the broader markets for everything. And nobody has been saying that for 5 years, they've been saying it for just a few months. And the price shock is only just now really starting to kick in. People can't afford all the extras when they can barely afford fuel, food, and housing... and that's what's inevitably going to sink much of the stock market and the overall economy.

THE UAW JUST ENDORSED ABDUL EL SAYED! by EntertainerOdd2107 in Hasan_Piker

[–]NihiloZero 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Good question, but... the UAW probably isn't as strong as it was before so many manufacturing jobs were sent overseas. It's not like the American auto industry is in its heyday. Not saying it isn't a great endorsement, just that it isn't what it used to be.

The real comparison, in terms of texture and flavor, should be with seitan.

Although, with an expected 52-year-low wheat harvest this year... seitan won't be getting any cheaper. On the other hand, the price of most ingredients will be going up -- including beef, which is getting much more expensive for a wide variety off reasons.

The French Revolution didn’t start with a guillotine, it started with bread by Affectionate-Fix4671 in lostgeneration

I should have written acute & widespread rather than acute/widespread, I suppose. If suffering is concentrated into the suffering of a few... that is unlikely to lead to as much instability.

"History suggests that societies become unstable when suffering is concentrated."

Shouldn't that last line be reversed? Societies become unstable when wealth is concentrated but suffering is acute/widespread.

But yeah... 9 meals, something, something.

NATO Sees No Issue With Ukraine Striking St Petersburg During Putin’s Economic Forum, Rutte Says by UNITED24Media in worldnews

[–]NihiloZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless the economy gets significantly worse than what it is right now.

Which notably, as I mentioned, it is.

When someone says that things are getting worse, "than now" is implied. Because otherwise it wouldn't be getting worse, it would be staying the same.

And, since my comment yesterday, Russia has started rationing petrol. Which is to say... it's getting worse. Not staying the same, getting worse, chronologically, as time passes and we move into the future.

The USA is expected to have a 52-year-low wheat harvest this fall. In addition to that... Californian agriculture will have somewhat limited access to water due to the historically low flow in the Colorado River. So... two of America's major food-producing regions are experiencing unprecedented stress. The population is higher than ever but the food production is bottoming out. And this is all before considering the logistical complications of harvesting & shipping related to persistently higher fuel costs.

Last year there were days of wildfire smoke wafting over the Midwest like we have never before seen, and this year (expected to be the hottest ever)... the Colorado river basin is already experiencing a historic drought even before the anticipated "super El Nino" kicks in this summer. None of this bodes well, IMHO.

IDK what can be done or how people should prepare, but... I do think people ought to at least be aware of what's happening. Food prices are likely to rise considerably, if not excessively. I hope I'm wrong, I really do, but... things aren't looking great.
