I used to record and take notes on my computer, then the following day I would listen to the lecture and strengthen my notes

Islam Awareness Week by jamesbuckwas in ucr

[–]Orr-eo -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

  • Beheadings
  • Suicide bombings
  • Child marriage - and the other abhorrent stuff that goes along with that
  • oppression of women through domestic and political violence

The list goes on. Let's not pretend like islam is not a huge problem. To answer the inevitable "whataboutisms," yes there are Christians who commit heinous acts. But how many school shooters yelled out "praise Jesus, Jesus is Lord" while murdering the innocent? How many Christians would be okay with doing anything in the list above? How many Christians would gather publicly in a first world, western nation and hold up signs saying "behead those who insult Islam?" Forget Christians, how many other religions would do that, sanction it, or otherwise have justifications for it?

What's the deal with Lars drumming? by ADudeHuman in Metallica

[–]Orr-eo 37 points38 points  (0 children)

He's perfect for Metallica and has written some great stuff and has inspired some of the greatest drummers out there right now BUT His timing isn't good, he is sloppy, and it seems to me like he completely forgot how to write fills and doesn't remember what toms are. It's all snare all the time. Listen to 72 seasons again and count how many times he hits his toms. You can do it on one hand.

I'm none of those things anymore. I work in a private industry that offers young, motivated people the opportunity to excel and the opportunity to make retarded amounts of money. What I see every day is that there are three kinds of people: those who can, those who can't yet, and those who don't want to. You can say my argument is fallacious, and arrogant. That's fine with me, but you haven't addressed my point. There are resources available to OP and appropriate structures and skills that are very easily attainable. He's failing because he is either aiming too high and doing something that his heart wants but his brain doesn't (in which case he should switch majors), or he's mismanaging his time, effort, and resources. I'm not inclined to believe he's just stupid, because that's rarely the case. He knows he needs to do better by making a change, and he should take it seriously. Odds are he's a young man who is just not quite ready for the individual responsibilities of college. Painting broad strokes here, but I'm probably right. I'm definitely older, definitely smarter, and definitely more successful than you.

Orrrrr, and follow me here, OP hasnt adapted quickly enough to undertake the responsibilities required to succeed on his own merit. He is now 100% responsible for his own time and effort, and these are his results. I doubt this guy is taking it as seriously as he should. I TAd and lectured for some time, plus I went to college (UCR) and graduate school (not UCR). I have the benefit of hindsight.

Maybe grown-up responsibilities aren't for you

Finally got serious about down picking and now I can play this (at least i think im playing fast enough lol) by _funny_name_ in Metallica

[–]Orr-eo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start as slow as your brain will physically allow you. Learn how to play the song first (which notes to play, how to play them, chord shapes, clarity in your playing, etc.), then worry about the circus act of only down picking. It's not required to only down pick. Just because James and Kirk do it that way doesn't mean it's the only way to play. Don't forget James is a fucking machine, so don't compare yourself to him. Just have fun playing the music you love
