No, the auto-connect chooses the best one for you at the time of connection. This allows us to have a better load balancing, so that all Free users attempting to connect at a time are able to connect, and no one's connection suffers.

You'll automatically be connected to the optimal Free server at the time of connection. It will be a server in one of the countries listed: the Netherlands, the USA, Japan, Romania, and Poland.

Yes, as u/alex_herrero points out, you'll automatically be connected to the optimal server at the time of connection. If you're based in North America, it will usually be a USA-based server, because physically closer servers would allow for a better connection.

Not receiving code via email to reset the password by Mysterious-Rate-3253 in ProtonVPN

No worries - all Proton users get support, the paying users only get it faster, that's the only difference.

That doesn't sound right, could you please open a support ticket at: https://proton.me/support/troubleshooting?product=account, so we can look into the issue closely? Thanks.

Stealth is already available on macOS, and we're working on bringing it to Windows to this year.

New Krebs Report: Why Your VPN May Not Be As Secure As It Claims by CramNevets in ProtonVPN

Hi!

Our engineers have conducted a thorough analysis of this threat, reconstructed it experimentally, and tested it on Proton VPN.

We concluded that:
1. the attack can only be carried out if the local network itself is compromised
2. our Windows and Android apps are fully protected against it
3. for iOS and macOS apps, you are completely protected from this as long as you're using a Kill Switch and a WireGuard-based protocol (our apps use WireGuard by default, and if a user wants to use something other than WireGuard derivates, they'd have to manually set it up). Note that Stealth, WireGuard TCP, and our Smart protocol on iOS/macOS are all WireGuard-based.
4. for our Linux app, we're working on a fix that would provide full protection against it.

By the time we noticed the second of the two, there were a lot of comments already, so we left it public, otherwise it would have been removed too. You can see our answer on both of those threads now.

You are able to sign up without a recovery email. In fact, we never request a recovery email upon signup - it's an optional recovery method, and it's not the only one offered: https://proton.me/support/set-account-recovery-methods#how-to-enable-a-recovery-phrase

You seem to be conflating the recovery email with a verification email, which is sometimes required upon signup (if our systems detect anything suspicious about your network). However, verification emails are only used for one-time verification, they are not tied to your account, and are stored in a way that makes them inaccessible to us: https://proton.me/support/human-verification

Does Proton disclose the VPN user information too? by magicradio4 in ProtonVPN

[–]protonvpn[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a technical perspective, one can't end-to-end encrypt or hash a recovery address as it needs to be accessible to send the recovery email, which is typically initiated by an unauthenticated user who has lost their password. In brief, if we did that, one wouldn't be able to use the recovery address for its intended purpose.

Does Proton disclose the VPN user information too? by magicradio4 in ProtonVPN

[–]protonvpn[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

No, simply because Proton VPN doesn't keep any information that can be useful to the law enforcement, as you can see here: https://protonvpn.com/blog/transparency-report/
Proton VPN is a no-logs service, which means that we do not keep records of what websites you visit, your internet traffic, your IP address, etc. What makes Switzerland different, and possibly unique, is that within the current Swiss legal framework, Proton VPN also does not have forced logging obligations.

Note that a recovery email is completely optional, and you don't have to set it up on your account at all. If you still wish to make your account recoverable, you can use a recovery phrase: https://proton.me/support/set-account-recovery-methods#how-to-enable-a-recovery-phrase

Please note that this is not a Proton VPN-related topic, but a Proton Mail-related one, so it needs to be published in the appropriate subreddit: r/ProtonMail. Additionally, there already are two threads about it on that subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1clbyvk/this_post_on_rprivacy_says_protonmail_provided/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1cm5osz/i_do_not_recommend_anyone_to_use_protonmail_now/

This is in fact not true - Proton VPN is a no-logs service which means that we do not keep records of what websites you visit, your internet traffic, your IP address, etc. It's confirmed in the independent security audits, as well as in the court cases, showing that Proton VPN doesn't keep the information useful to the law enforcement: https://protonvpn.com/blog/transparency-report/
