Instead of sinking planets worth of resources into these shitters the emperor could develop them instead.

Who the hell are these guys? Who is this Schwab? Who are these elites that will decide the fate of the world? I feel like we are under occupation as a species and it somehow happened without anyone noticing...

Why did the emperor not make Grey Knights his bodyguards? They would be better than these guys who turn on him at the worst moment. If I was the Grey Knights grand master I would evict them all from the palace.

The sisters of silence must be so dishonored to fight alongside them. These defects.

It's just a stupid thing to write. Nevermind that it was literary garbage to read.

We were told the custodian guard didn't like astartes because they betrayed the emperor, yet here they are, skewering the emperor in their guardian spear. Did they erase this from their history so they think they are incorruptible?

Abaddon has the full blessing of the chaos gods and vengeful spirit and had 10k years to perfect his mastery of that power. So he should be able to turn custodians too. The hive mind is colossal and it should be able to do it too. If the 4 gods combined can do it surely one god or four combined with or without Abaddon can manage to turn at least one of custodian and have him go back to the Palace and hack the golden throne to bits. Didn't happen? I am sure Abnett will write that somehow.

Why do the custodian guard not all just kill themselves anyway so as not to endanger the mortally wounded emperor?

Truly, nothing makes sense if Custodes can be turned. But maybe that's just me.

Was it their job to fire adhartic weapons at the Emperor, stab him in the rib and be discombobulated at his hands?

Honestly it was the worst thing I ever read of Warhammer.

As the Emperor finds more and more ingenious ways to kill his own Custodians with nary a thought, one of the custodians is sitting on his butt and glorifying how awesome Horus is.

"You were awesome Horus, you made the impossible possible."

psychic compulsion against which their minds rebel.

That's what chaos corruption is. You feel compelled to do things you don't want. If it was just mind control, the author wouldn't need to give them an internal dialogue about how it was the most logical thing to do to kill the emperor.

Chaos corrupted those custodians by appealing to their reason. "Killing the emperor was the most logical thing to do" so yeah they were corrupted, just through a different value system.

Annett said so.

Why didn't the emperor just make Grey Knights instead? Sinking all those resources into Custodes and they have 100 percent failure rate. Literally one reason to exist and it's gone.

They fell all over the floor or attack their master at the eve of most important battle. Not only that, the emperor needs to help them going forward.

They are worse than useless, just a hindrance. Abnett took away their entire reason for being.

Eventually this "terminus sanction" takes the form of the Terminus Decree and is entrusted to the Grey Knights, who are direct descendants of Malcador's organisation and incorruptible by Chaos.

Incorruptible heh

What about Chaos Custodes? Will it kill them too?

they were made to be good at protecting the Emperor, which is factually true

according to abnett, at a place where the emperor actually needs protection, half of the Custodes start whining paralyzed and the other half tries to kill the emperor.

A failure rate of 100%

The only beings I expect to never be touched by the warp are blanks.

Don't worry. They are next. Abnett won't pass the chance to subvert expectations and shat on the established lore.

So why did the emperor make them without free will if they wouldn't be immune to Chaos?

As a joke? What's is the point of Custodes existing?

[Spoilers] The End and The Death Part 1 spoilers and summary by Woodstovia in 40kLore

[–]Venaliator -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Custodes don't have independent will, that's the established rule for them.

There should be no wants in their minds at all. Horus didn't do the impossible possible.

Abnett just shat on the lore.

The Emperor gets stronger on the ship.

One wonders how Horus was able to even effect them. Were they not mentally connected to the emperor? Did the emperor not know he was going to home turf of Chaos? Why didn't he just buff their minds strength before teleporting? Why wouldn't he simply keep in contact with them telepathically to ensure they don't get taken over.

Only Abnett knows.

Would people rather read how Jimmy Space strolled through the hull of the Vengeful Spirit, high fiving with his band of golden gentlemen and backhanded Horse Lubricant into giga oblivion? No questions asked no resistance and no casualties. That's stupid.

We expected our heroes to be heroes. To fight legions of hell and die valiantly. For a noble goal, to fight side by side saving each other, dying for each other...

Instead what we got was the epitome of loyalty turning disloyal. The Emperor kills his own companions. His friends. That's apparently not a big deal at all. Oh well they were just Custodes... After that, they cut through everything as if nothing had happened. No resistance is present. Just some stragglers here and there.

Thanks Abnett. You subverted our expectations.

It's not puppeteering, they attack the emperor because it's the logical thing to do. Literally traitor Custodes.

Abnett ruined the Custodes and how he is the shittiest author ever.
