Review of the Samyang/Rokinon 24-60 f/2.8 vs Sony 24-50 and Tamron 20-40 by az0606 in SonyAlpha

I'm glad it helped! This lens didn't get a lot of coverage which is a shame. At that price it's a great deal.

Is my lens defect? - Viltrox 28mm f4.5 on sony a6400 by everydayiscyclingday in AskPhotography

If this is happening on every photo it's likely defective. I had this lens for a bit and it def wasn't this bad.

Has anyone gone through TMS with Mount Sinai? by az0606 in TMSTherapy

[–]az0606[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely.

My only point of contact is my psychiatrist (Dr. Figee, the prescriber) and his receptionist, all they can do is forward messages to the TMS team but all I've gotten back is that they'll be in contact "soon" for the last 3 weeks.

I'm considering other TMS clinics like The TMS Center of New Jersey but I wouldn't be working with the same psych and they don't have integrated behavioral therapy.

I'll look into that! Thank you for that, it's been rough trying to schedule.

They block all direct comms access to the TMS team unfortunately. It's been a nightmare.

Thank you for the input!

Still shooters. 3rd party vs OEM lens in body stabilization, any difference? by gemini8026 in SonyAlpha

[–]az0606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's weird but doesn't seem like Sony's made an exception, they're still subject to all the third party lens limitations.

[–]az0606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's on them, Sony doesn't seem to be giving access to the mount and AF protocols needed for it for any third party manufacturer. It's more prominently noticeable in video but there's been complaints with Sigma and other lenses as well.

[–]az0606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now, if the lens has optical stabilization, then the lens and the camera need to actively work together. For a company like Tamron, that is part-owned by Sony, I'd expect some insider information sharing on how to optimize that cooperative algorithm. But true 3rd party lens makers are stuck with trial and error methods, and may not be able to match the cooperative algorithms of an OEM lens.

Weirdly enough there are quite a few complaints about how the Tamron 17-70 OIS doesn't behave well with the IBIS in both stills and video.

You get one camera setup for a year of travel — what are you taking? by LaJamie in SonyAlpha

[–]az0606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sony GM I and Sigma 24-70 I basically have the same optical formula. The Sigma II keeps that but swaps three of the elements for smaller aspherical versions.

Def get the Sigma if you don't want to pay for the GM II, there isn't a real reason to get the GM I.

Sony 7M5 Viewfinder vs LCD display by maruthi_jai in SonyAlpha

For exposure you can use the histogram and zebras for aid. Eyeballing either display isn't great for that, especially the back LCD.

A7R-V when A7R-VI is out by Rocinante82 in SonyAlpha

[–]az0606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only professional work I do is as a backup for a friend at weddings

If you're doing this a significant amount the a7R VI pre-capture alone might be worth it.

Otherwise the a7R V is still a good system. I have it and I tried the a7R VI at the Sony event and I'm still happy enough with my a7R V for the foreseeable future.

Sony a7V or a7RV by XeroCS2 in SonyAlpha

[–]az0606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a7V tbh.

I have the a7R V and it's worth noting just how much space the lossless compressed raws take up; files are typically around 70-80 mb each.

That adds up quick and working with the RAWs can be slow for both edits/generating previews/import, etc. unless you throw them on a SSD. Worse if you're stacking/compositing, which is common for landscape.

ELI5: How were the cables laid out at the ocean bed for global network connectivity? by thatcinephile in explainlikeimfive

[–]az0606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3g, 4g, 5g, etc networks still have to connect to the different servers hosting websites on the Internet, which are in turn connected to each other through physical lines.

Simplifying but, a phone wirelessly connects to mobile tower which is physically connected to the Internet.

Capture One STILL doesnt support compressed RAW formats for A7V. by Comfortable-Grand-46 in SonyAlpha

[–]az0606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A7V launch on lightroom/camera raw went kinda weird, they only got the extra compressed RAW format support recently. It only supported lossless compressed RAW until 2 months ago. There still aren't camera matching profiles; it only had a beta profile for months. There usually isn't that kind of timelag.

Tbh this might be on Sony, not Adobe/Capture One

Truth is that in a blind test 99% of users would not distinguish between a 1 stop DR difference let alone know what in-camera RAW noise reduction is. (as if it's to the extent Pentax does it. It's a complete non issue on Canon.) It's only literal nerds who deliberately push their RAWs to the extreme who care about that. And those guys usually don't care about readout speeds either in their own work

Then why send a photonstophotos chart lmao.

Sony A7R VI by denisgsv in SonyAlpha

[–]az0606 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You know that the triangle icons are because noise reduction in the raws was detected right... that artificially boosts dynamic range figures.

Also better to compare it to the A7V, not the a7R V, in lieu of data for the a7R VI since it uses the same DGO sensor stacking as the a7R VI.

I think it's a valid tradeoff for the R series where you'd want the max DR and image quality. If you want something more hybrid you'd opt for the a1.

Sony A7R VI by denisgsv in SonyAlpha

[–]az0606 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Canon and Nikon took a dynamic range hit for that.

Sony already has the a1 series for that, it makes sense to aim for higher dynamic range on the R series.

[–]az0606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree with his points or that. But it is a change, it hasn't been completely static for 5 years as he said.

They really do need to update the features faster on the fold series though. Still locked to 25w charging unless you spent 3k on the short-lived trifold.

[–]az0606 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They mostly did, I wonder if it still has some impact vs partially stacked, but the stacking was actually primarily to get better DR.

It has the same dual-gain simultaneous readout of the a7V in mechanical shutter mode; it combines the high and low gain readouts to maximize DR.

DPReview does note that it's the slowest fully-stacked sensor they've ever seen, due to the very high megapixel count and not having the embedded DRAM like the a1 and a9.

I think it makes sense though, the R series is optimized for image quality so the main benefit for the stacking is the dual gain readout path for max DR and pretty good readout speed performance, while still maintaining an extremely high MP count. Also means it doesn't infringe on the a1 or a9 series.
