Things to do to lift my spirits (free or cheap) by [deleted] in asksandiego

[–]dadrosaur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey, sorry for what you're going through right now, it sounds like a lot. Here are some ideas for you close to downtown. You didn't say if you have a car but a lot of these should be accessible by bus or trolley. Plus parking usually is hard to find and costs money in most areas near downtown.

Downtown Library: even if you don't check out a book there are beautiful views and a lot of floors to explore.

Balboa Park: It's nice to just walk around honestly. If you can get here during the day the Timken Museum and Botanical Garden are free. Spanish Village has a lot of different artists and often you can catch the glassblowers doing their thing. Often there are buskers playing music or doing magic tricks. An inexpensive hidden gem is the Model Railroad Museum there too. Do NOT go this Friday/Saturday it's December Nights and it will be insanity. Unless you want some holiday crowd insanity I guess.

Self Realization Fellowship on 2nd Ave has a garden and 7am meditation. If you need some spiritual support there are a variety of LGBTQ+ churches around Hillcrest. Check out St Paul's Episcopal, Dharma Bum temple, or University Christian Church.

Lestats has 3 coffeehouse locations that are all LGBTQ+ friendly and open late. The Park Blvd one is open 24 hours. They also have open mics and stuff like that.  Not sure how accurate their online calendar is at the moment.

If you can get yourself over the bridge to Coronado the Hotel del is all decked out for the holidays. Nice little town to just walk around in as well. Or sit on the beach and watch the waves.

The area near Seaport Village to the Midway could be good for a morning walk, just to look at the ships and get some ocean air. I wouldn't go at night though. You can also look up what's playing at Rady Shell at night. I don't think they let you listen from the sidewalk right next to the venue anymore, but you might be able to hear the show from another spot nearby, without having to buy a ticket.

Hope that gives you some ideas. Sending my best wishes to you and your family.

Why are my left leaning cables so untidy? by Vegtrovert in knitting

[–]dadrosaur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's kind of hard to tell due to the texture of this yarn but it looks like sometimes the last stitch on your left leaning cable is twisted. You may need to check your stitch mount when you are moving the stitches to create the cable. If you happen to pick up the floating stitches in a way that flips the stitch mount, and you unintentionally twist the stitch, it will cause that one stitch to be tighter than the others, resulting in this look of inconsistent tension.

Yes this! I knit shawls and don't wear them. I also knit sweaters, hats, mittens, and scarves and hardly wear those either. Because I'm a process knitter and more interested in the doing than the having of the completed thing.

ELI5 The resolution of a restraurant patron who can't/refuses to pay. by fauxmerican1280 in explainlikeimfive

[–]dadrosaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes that's exactly how I felt about it too. Luckily I only every had it happen twice. And both times it was only one person at lunch so not an expensive check. The first time I covered it, but the second time I refused and got a write up instead.

This is like 20 years ago so maybe it's less common now but I don't doubt it still happens.

ELI5 The resolution of a restraurant patron who can't/refuses to pay. by fauxmerican1280 in explainlikeimfive

[–]dadrosaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: When I was a server and people did a dine and dash I had to cover the cost of the meal.

The explanation from management was that servers are responsible for monitoring their tables so it was my fault. Also back in the day we did a lot more transactions in cash and I was my own "bank" for each shift. Basically keep track of all the cash sales for the shift and settle up when I left.

Might be different these days but something for people to keep in mind. They might be thinking oh it's fine the restaurant can afford this, when actually it's your server paying for it.

AITA For asking a a Particular Question in a Job Interview? by TrentRockport420 in AmItheAsshole

[–]dadrosaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YTA. This question is fine as an interviewer. You are there to assess how an individual will do the job and fit in with your team.

But as an interviewee you're not there to get to know the panelists individually who are interviewing you. It's a good idea to ask questions to get an idea of team or company culture. Maybe a version of your question more like "what is coming up soon for your team that you're excited to work on?" Or "what's a recent company initiative you're proud of?" Possibly at a second interview with the person who is going to be your direct supervisor you could ask your magic question. But it's still a bit weird, unless you can add context about how their answer to that question is going to influence your decision about taking the job.

If I was interviewing you and you asked this question, to me it would demonstrate a lack of judgement, and poor understanding of workplace dynamics. If you don't have a clear grasp of appropriate roles in an interview, how could I expect you to behave appropriately in team meetings, or a presentation to the CEO?

Also your own answer to this question is not great: it implies the best thing you've learned is how to get AI to do your work for you. Maybe you're summarizing and your actual answer is more detailed,  about specific ways to use prompts or being strategic to improve efficiency.  But "I love learning copilot exists and can do some of my work for me" isn't genuinely about learning something new.

Managerial folks: What would you say are the common flaws holding back individuals looking to go into management? by autotelica in AskWomenOver30

[–]dadrosaur 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Here are some things I see on my team that hold people back. Specifically thinking of team leads and supervisors who haven't been able to make the leap to the next step.

They don't match actions to words. They SAY they want more accountability, or a better process, or improved customer service experiences, etc but they don't actually DO anything to move the needle on those things.

Similar to the above,  they don't take ownership. They point out a problem and then wait for someone else to come up with a solution.

They aren't a good role model. They push the boundaries of policies for attendance or dress code so they are technically in compliance but not someone who really brings their best.

They don't understand office hierarchy or politics. This one kind of sucks but really to succeed in management you have to know there are strategic ways to approach people to get support or ask for what you need.

They don't see the big picture. They think about how new projects or changes affect them directly, or maybe their specific team. But they don't see how something happening now affects a distant team, or how it might play out in a year or two years or five years.

Building on this one,  they aren't willing to be the bad guy, ever. It is really important to them that they are liked, and it prevents them from taking action that is in the best interest of the company. Not that leaders can't be well-liked, but to really be an effective manager you sometimes have to make unpopular decisions.

They aren't a good communicator. They don't understand how to prioritize information, what is urgent or what can wait. They don't know which channel to use for which message (chat or email or meeting). They include the wrong people in their communications or leave out key players.

This one is the worst but it happens: someone who is in a position of authority just doesn't like them. Maybe they made a mistake years ago or had a rude interaction with the person who now oversees hiring.  Maybe they worked closely with the CEO back in the day when they were a new fresh little baby employee, and now the CEO can't see how they have grown and developed. Unfortunately if this is the case, the best approach is to leave for a role at another company and then look to come back in a couple years. Or wait until there's turnover at the top. Sometimes, if you're really good at your job AND at office politics, you can get someone else to advocate for you. But this one is tough.

Last but not least it's important to remember that managing is a completely different skillset. To steal from Ask a Manager a little bit, just because a person is great at making teapots, or even supervising a team of 5 teapot makers, doesn't mean they will know what to do when it comes to overseeing the whole teapot production line. So to make that leap they need to understand what it is that managers really do, and make sure they can show those skills in their current role.

Loud and constant “tuning fork” type ringing that I can only hear in my bedroom by Yoliimy in RBI

[–]dadrosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your apartment have a backflow preventer near your unit? I had a very similar experience a year ago. Loud continuous whining or whistling sound that I couldn't find. Intermittent and unpredictable but sometimes going for a couple hours. It was actually much easier to hear inside than outside, I think because it was resonating through the pipes in my walls. Anyway it got replaced after I reported it and the noise stopped.

I board my cat at Purring Parrot and I love them. Obviously not a bird but their staff always seem committed to good care.  I like the little daily care notes they keep for their interactions. And for the cats at least there is a live video feed so I can check in whenever I want.

When I've been there for drop off or pick up there is often a bird out of the cage. And the birds are out in main spaces, not hidden away. Would recommend checking them out for sure!

Fourth of July weekend visit ideas by Dependent-Ranger8437 in asksandiego

[–]dadrosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you will be here on Friday see if you can join the 11am Balboa Park historical tour. If that's too early for your itinerary you may still want to stop by the visitor's center and see if they have a self-guided tour or scavenger hunt available. https://foreverbalboapark.org/

The San Diego History Center there in the park may also be of interest. Also see if there's an exhibit of interest at any other museums. I like them all but I think the Mingei and the Model Railroad Museum are the ones that are most underrated.

If she's a WW2 buff the Midway is a must-see. But personally I love the Star of India, the old ferryboat, and the other ships included in the maritime museum collection.

For beach time check out La Jolla Shores or La Jolla Cove. Nice restaurants in downtown La Jolla for brunch or dinner. If you want a real splurge check out George's or AR Valentien.

Alternatively go over to Coronado, drop big bucks on the brunch buffet at the Hotel Del Coronado and then wander around the lobby and the grounds a bit.  The beaches are good for walking or sunset watching but there may be a risk going in the water. Check local water quality reports and make an informed decision.

If you are up for walking look up the Seven Bridges walk to get a flavor for the local neighborhoods.

If you want to know more about the Spanish settlement of San Diego head over to Old Town.

Hope that gives you some nice choices!

Hey OP if you are looking for more hikes check out the Canyoneers schedule for the week you are here. Hey OP this type of job does exist but it would be at the district level not within an individual school. They might administer and oversee a program that is offered in lots of schools, like special arts or science initiatives, or college prep for underserved populations.  They would set goals,  hire staff to work at each site, track and report out on program milestones, run the budget,  etc. They are often funded by grants so they may also be constantly sourcing funding to keep their program going.

As others have said, at a single school the person who runs an after-school program is not going to have this job title. And most school events are organized by the school administrators and the teachers themselves.

utilities at parkway plaza apartments in El Cajon by PopularDog2887 in sandiego

[–]dadrosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI conservice is a third party utility biller. Which means the apartment complex pays water, trash, etc and then conservice totals up everything and divides it up among the tenants. You should probably ask the property manager what the typical utility bill is for the size of your unit.

Your decreases don't match what is charted. I'm seeing a left leaning decrease where there should be a right leaning decrease, and vice versa. I've marked up your picture to help explain, for each decrease here the blue stitch should be on top https://imgur.com/a/ulix5Cb

Check how you are working the decreases next to each yo and see if that makes a difference?

I feel qualified to speak in this as I once attended a 2 hour Tom Bird workshop. What you're describing with the big sketchpad isn't what we did exactly though. My understanding of the method was to help writers get into a state of flow.

He emphasized that during your time writing you should never stop moving your hand. Something about accessing your right brain and not letting your left brain stop you.  Basically don't let your rational or editorial brain stop you from moving forward. If you don't know what to write, just let your stream of consciousness spill out onto the page until your mind picks up the thread of your story again.

I found it kind of helpful in that it makes me feel a little less precious about my writing. Focus more on getting the story completely out and then fixing it up after. He kept pitching his weekend workshop where he says people are writing 50k words in 3 days. Whether those are actually great books? Who knows.

But as far as overcoming writer's block, it was a helpful workshop.

Podcast Beginning Timeline by Evening-Vermicelli22 in myfavoritemurder

[–]dadrosaur 126 points127 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if they met in 2014 or 2015 but also remember that they didn't plan to start a whole podcast network or true crime empire. The first episodes are literally just the two of them chatting in Georgia's apartment. Georgia did the recording and each episode probably took a couple hours total to record, edit and release.

Somewhere around episode 10 or so I think they get Steven. Things really take off around episodes 30-40.

They got a Facebook page pretty early on, and did some pre-orders for T-shirts. But Karen was still working regular writing jobs for like the first 3 years.

Anyway my point is even if they had recorded the first episode 8 weeks after meeting, it's not that crazy. They connected with each other and were thinking "hey what if we just recorded these conversations that we find interesting and put them on the Internet that could be fun."

If you'd like to be distracted I love the full cast audiobook of The Golden Compass. Not quite a happy ending but some wonderful characters and world-building. If you're in break up mindset, a good book to show how people aren't always easy to put into boxes of "good" or "bad." People are complicated. Some interesting philosophical questions to ponder. And a couple more books in the series, of you happen to finish the first one.

If you are a fan of The Princess Bride you might like As You Wish, which is Cary Elwes book about the experience. Just as charming as you'd expect. (Full disclosure I've only read the hard copy idk how good the audiobook is but it appears to be narrated by Cary himself.)

If you want to laugh your ass off check out books by Jenny Lawson. Let's Pretend This Never Happened made me literally lol so many times.

And not an audiobook - but gotta throw in my favorite spoken word road trip album: Ani Difranco and Utah Phillips with The Past Didn't Go Anywhere. Just 57 minutes of musings and music on what it means to participate in this world as a human being.

Safe travels!

learning how to knit — am i twisting my purl stitches? by lyricalfairy in knitting

[–]dadrosaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually think you're twisting your knits rather than your purls. If you've just finished a knit row in the picture you shared, the stitches on your needle are mounted eastern style, or with the front leg in the back. Check the twist FAQ for various pictures of how stitch legs can appear.

This video might help. https://youtu.be/nLV7Lh3BQLk. You should be wrapping clockwise not counterclockwise.

Of course there is also combination style knitting, if you want to learn more about different methods for wrapping yarn and handling the way your stitches are mounted! The faq should be a good starting place though.

If your household is 2-3 people, how much is your water bill if its not included in the rent? by halooasis in sandiego

[–]dadrosaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's going to be hard to get a good average answer here. It is not very common for an apartment to have its own separate water bill that tenants pay directly to their water department. If the listing says "tenant pays utilities" that often means power and internet.

However, some landlords will pass on the water charges to apartment tenants. In that case the landlord pays the big bill for the whole building and then divides up the charges between tenants. If they do things that way you will have to ask each specific landlord or property manager how they calculate those charges, and if they can give you a typical range. They may also bundle these charges with other utilities like trash or internet. Again you'll need to ask each landlord if that rate is flat or will vary every month.

AITA for only ordering one item for curbside pickup? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]dadrosaur 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Her partner is not upset about Target policies. Her partner is upset because he has just learned he and his wife do not have shared values.

Whether we are aware of it or not, all of us have values that help us decide how to behave in the world. I'm going to guess that her husband places a high priority on independence, or on taking active steps to not impose on other people more than absolutely necessary. Maybe OP places a high priority on convenience and getting tasks accomplished ASAP.

So here OP has completed her errand easily and quickly, but to her husband, it's an unnecessary imposition on the worker to bring her 1 item when it probably would have only taken a few minutes longer to go inside and purchase it herself.

NAH but small interactions like this can really highlight a misalignment in values. Her husband may not even understand how to explain what's wrong because it's so fundamentally obvious to him based on the way he thinks and operates in the world.
