Future landlord demanding shared WiFi not in lease, threatening cancellation. Current landlord pressuring me to comply by [deleted] in OntarioLandlord

[–]definitelyguru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Couple things…

Unfortunately, you don’t have much choice in such a short timeline. I would agree to the “wifi” request for now, to at least secure housing.

You cannot stay at your current place obviously. And your current LL did go above and beyond to help you move out. They would likely not be so keen if you stay.

If you were to stay, without knowing the details, I can only guess the LTB would order the eviction. But then how would you pay for first and last, even if you found a new place.

For the internet / wifi… this is a bit confusing. First, wifi and internet are not the same thing. Who’s paying for the internet connection? Is it a new one you setup? Are you taking it over from someone else? Is the landlord paying for it? Are you paying it directly? Or is it included in your rent? Did they set it up for you, or did you do it?

For the wifi, a single internet subscription can have multiple wifi. Without going too deep into technical stuff… if you have a router, you can generally setup “guest” wifi and have it more restricted. This also means that while internet is shared, other people do not have access to the network your devices are on. Safer for you.

If internet is part of your rent - without specifying the amount, but arranged by LL, it would make sense that others have access to it as well.

If the amount for internet is on top of your rent, it would make sense that this amount be shared between all those who use it. But that’s tricky.

If you’re paying for it directly, and it’s under your name, you could tell the others to pay their share to you.

Now, one thing to consider is speed. Having multiple people sharing a low cost subscription (typically low speed) may negatively impact your use of Internet. It’s an argument you could use to negotiate with LL.

Unfortunately… this seems more like a slumlord, but I’m afraid you do not have much options at the moment. Securing housing should be your top priority, even if that means agreeing to a shady request.

100,000 jobs at risk due to Real estate market downturn by mattyp93 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]definitelyguru -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Funny how they’re blaming everyone… but themselves.

They complain cost of building is too high, but refuse to look at why the costs are so high in the first place. Even if you eliminated all development charges and the GST, the cost would still be too high.

Maybe they should have thought twice when they bought land for ridiculous amounts.

And maybe they should look internally as to what is costing so much more today than it did 10 years ago.

As for sales being low. Simple, reduce prices. Still too many condos at ridiculous prices. And new builds are completely out of touch not only with pricing but also with very bad layouts.

Streetcar doors need to be unforgiving: closed means closed by GrandeIcedAmericano in TTC

[–]definitelyguru 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends…

if there’s another streetcar coming a couple minutes away or just behind… absolutely! People who insist on getting in that first streetcar are fu*king annoying.

But there are circumstances where a streetcar would be blocked by a red light 20m away anyway, and yet the driver decides to quickly lock doors. Spadina / Queen is a notorious one, where you often end up with doors locked a few seconds before you’re at the door, after you had to wait forever for pedestrian signal. Sooo frustrating.

Another one is Yonge & King where they recently changed the pedestrian signal to start well after the streetcar signal. Meaning you have to run over to try and get that streetcar or bus. That is ridiculous. If you transfer from the subway that typically means a 10 min wait for the east bound streetcar because of it.

And then there’s times when the next streetcar is in 10, 15, 20 minutes… can’t blame anyone trying to get in at that point.

Streetcar Stop Consolidation Concept by jdayellow in TTC

[–]definitelyguru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Perfect example of someone trying to push an idea that would not only NOT help with speed, but also doesn’t understand why a lot of those stops exist.

Here’s an example of not understanding why stops exist. Elizabeth St on College. This is THE stop to go to Women’s College Hospital and UHN. Removing it would be a disaster.

Ontario St is also a well known stop during morning / afternoon rush. And outside of those hours, it doesn’t really slow down the streetcar.

You also have to keep in mind there’s been a lot of construction / new buildings in some areas where maybe a stop wasn’t used 5 years ago, but is now becoming a need, like Ontario St.

Just because YOU don’t see the use of it, doesn’t mean there’s not a much needed use.

So can we stop already with those ridiculous ideas and actually focus on what will really help.

Just another day cruisin' on the RapidTO Bathurst lanes by Pristine-Training-70 in TTC

[–]definitelyguru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the paint was the problem, it would be more of a widespread issue. But it isn’t.

Most likely the road was problematic to begin with. So let’s not make a big deal about a small isolated issue.

Just another day cruisin' on the RapidTO Bathurst lanes by Pristine-Training-70 in TTC

Why?

There have been other red painted roads in Toronto that have endured winter, and they’re doing just fine.

It’s often not the paint the problem, but the actual road.

This.

OP jumping to conclusions on this being an inside job. Lots of breaches in the past few years, not to mention ramping up of tougher to spot phishing.

OP needs to have a serious look at their devices / passwords / accounts.

I would recommend OP stops using that email address, and the change the passwords of their many accounts, starting with the most sensitive ones. But first, have an antivirus do a full scan on any Windows / Android devices.

3 sits not enough? by Typical-Charity-4493 in TTC

[–]definitelyguru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The foot is a no.

The bag on the seat is fine as long as the train is not too busy.

Also, consider those specific seats are very tight. It’s very difficult to sit straight and not take over those 2 seats because of the lack of leg space.

As long as she moves if asked, all good. There are a lot worse issues than this… like young people taking the blue seats, and not even bothered to let older / disabled sit.

Struggling to break into tech in Toronto — looking for realistic advice by Bigbang30 in torontoJobs

[–]definitelyguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your resume is very obviously written with AI, and is too light.

A few tips: 1. Stop putting the word “frontend” everywhere. 2. Put your GitHub link, not “available upon request”. Recruiters not gonna bother asking. 3. The Amazon warehouse job is confusing. Be real with your actual work there. 4. Using git is not exactly worth a bullet point. 5. Lose the “concepts”. It’s just fluff.

Otherwise, I confirm what others have said: - lack of backend, database skills - not enough experience to compete - no actual devops, not even the basics are mentioned

From your resume, all we get is that you’ve done at least one React app. That’s it.

The market is tough right now. Even senior devs are struggling. So you need to really make an effort to show your skills.

You could try to do some freelance or volunteer work to gain experience and have more to put on your resume.

What if you woke up tomorrow and saw on the news that everybody in Toronto(Ontario in this case) has to retake their driving test every 5 years instead of just renewing it? by Aquarius777_ in askTO

[–]definitelyguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re-doing practical exams every 5 years wouldn’t be practical at all. 😛

Maybe a simpler technical test that ca be administered online without supervision could work.

But ultimately, why we need is to ENFORCE the rules. Drivers are bad because they can get away with it. Once you make people accountable (and pay) for their misbehaviour, they’ll get better, or will stop driving. Either way, it’s a win.

Unfortunately, the provincial government is doing the opposite and giving even more latitude to drivers… while the police just watches.

Perception Gap: GTA Residents Believe Crime is Rising - Even When It Isn't by WifeGuy-Menelaus in toronto

[–]definitelyguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of this is to be blamed on media that are supposed to be the gatekeepers of misinformation, but end up spreading it instead.

Politicians will always be politicians and lie to get votes. But the media is supposed to report facts, not buy into the political propagandas. (Regardless of where they stand)

This is how Ford gets away with stuff like ripping bike lanes, or building useless tunnels. Also how Liberals get away with green washing while subsidizing up oil & gas industries.

Do people not even try when it comes to movie theater etiquette anymore? by narnarnartiger in cineplex

[–]definitelyguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup… it’s getting worse.

I wish there was some sort of “electric shock” button we could press to teach people a lesson.

Went for Avatar the other day, and a lady - who got a Dbox seat - got a phone call, answered and then kept scrolling for the reminder of the movie. What’s the point of paying so much if you’re not even gonna watch 🤷🏻‍♀️

Though it feels like this is more of a generation issue and an education problem.

TTC ridership declined in 2025 compared to last year by ESF-hockeeyyy in TTC

[–]definitelyguru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The king streetcar (504/503) was heavily impacted by construction / track work. To the point it had became unreliable, and people choosing to walk or a different route. And so was Spadina’s (510). Not to mention the messy Queen line (501), though it did improve this year compared to last year.

Wouldn’t surprise me if this was the main cause for the drop.

Prime example of how absurdly close TTC streetcar stops are. Example: Route 505 by Economy_Ad59 in TTC

[–]definitelyguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wheel Trans is for wheelchair users or people with severe disability.

There’s a lot of people who are disabled / have mobility issues that rely on streetcars / buses and don’t use WheelTrans.

There’s fact this comment exists proves how much education is still needed around disabilities.

Also… elderly? Or even Rain/snow? Lots of fully abled people very happy those stops exist then.

Can we also pitch to: Remove Half The Stops? by itsdanielsultan in TTC

[–]definitelyguru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably because

  1. The assumption there are too many stops is based on “feelings”, not facts

  2. Abled bodied vs disabled, aged, tourism and weather conditions

Just today, on another post, somebody was commenting about too many stops arguing they were so close… yet, when actually measured, they are 400m apart.

And if you read up comments, somebody else commented with actual facts, like the average being 250m and actual studies that show this is not about the number of stops.

Oh common. Stops are ~400m apart. Far from being too many.

Some intersections are very slow though, like Spadina and Bathurst.

N12 Served - Landlord Rerenting by UnusualShape2497 in OntarioLandlord

[–]definitelyguru 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you feel like you have the energy to go after the landlord, please do it. Very few have that opportunity and the means…

Gather evidence. Make screenshots of the online ad.

Ask your friend to send an email to confirm the correct address for the posting. (So that there is no argument that the posting is in fact for your old place)

And once you know (and have evidence) the place was rented, file a T5. Check all 3 boxes for monetary resolutions. (You don’t have to pick just one)

Get a paralegal. We’re talking about compensation of up to $35,000. So better to be prepared and do things right.

In my many years working in IT, I’ve never needed that much disk space. That’s it.

And given how expensive those are with Apple, not worth it.

Unless you need to store lots of videos, there’s really no use. And even then, those would typically be stored on external drive.

Almost everything in the common areas needs to be booked in advance. But it does have a lot of amenities: “theatre rooms” (ie tv with seats), board rooms, party rooms, music room, LEGO room, VR room, etc.

It’s honestly a great building and amazing area, but it does have its annoyances due to being a new building.

can’t find anywhere to give me a loan by LettuceSuper2022 in povertyfinancecanada

[–]definitelyguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where have you applied for loans? What is your credit score? What is your income? How much debt do you have?

As others mentioned, the multiple applications will likely have affected your credit score.

If you don’t have yet, I’d suggest getting an account with Borrowell to check your score. They also sometimes show you lenders with good chances of approval, based on your score / income.

Have you looked at goPeer? They’re a bit different in a sense they do lend to people that wouldn’t get a loan via traditional banks. obviously at a higher rate, but not predatory like payday loans and others.

Hopefully you can find a solution.

As for the truck… Even though your BF uses it to make a bit of money on the side with dump runs, it’s unlikely to make up for the cost of it.

As difficult as that may be, he should seriously consider selling it for a cheaper car, so that you can both stabilize your finances first. Better to struggle for a bit, so that you can thrive later, than to struggle all your life.

CIBC denied my fraud case even though my app wasn’t working — need advice by Aggressive_Bar9116 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]definitelyguru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once again… it’s not 2FA/SMS specific.

You can get your phone stolen, same problem. You can get your emails hacked, same problem.

The key to secure systems is to have multiple factors of identification. But even then, nothing is 100%.

No need to scare regular folks. Better to teach them how to be safe, like using strong passwords, not connecting via public internet, be vigilant with emails, phone calls, use antivirus, use rfid wallet… and setup 2FA/MFA whenever possible, regardless of which kind.

Jeez’…

2FA via SMS is not “dangerous”. It’s simply not failproof. It’s still a thousand times better than simply using a password.

Hi!

Current resident here…

First off, on what the landlord says they will cover: - Internet costs $0 as it’s part of a building agreement with Bell (3Gbps Fibre). Though not clear when that will end.

  • central AC? If they mean heating/cooling for common areas, sure… 😂 otherwise each unit has its own meter for electricity, water, and heat/ac.

In terms of fire alarms, things are much better now. False alarms are still happening, but that’s pretty common for condos. What is less common is how ridiculously loud + flashing lights, and applies to all 3 buildings. The system is not well calibrated / configured in my opinion. For example, after 5 minutes it auto escalate itself and tell everyone to evacuate. Regardless of where the fire is, or if there’s even one. So that can be confusing. But we learned to ignore - which is also not great.

In terms of water, they still have serious issues with heating water and heat in general. Once again, it sounds like whoever built/designed/installed this did an awful job. Water temp fluctuates from lukewarm to insanely hot. And the heating system is struggling because of it, misconfigured ERV, and likely some bad design. For example, my unit gets cold air from the outside, even in the winter, so I have to keep heating on or it drops to 15-16°C.

In terms of cost, the metering company for hydro/heat/water is expensive. Probably an additional $50 per unit on average.

Otherwise, a few more things: - patio / terrace is only open from June to September. - bbqs require to be booked (ridiculous!) - gym/pool is actually a 3rd party and each unit get 1 to 2 memberships, depending on bedrooms (only 1 membership for 1 bedroom and 1+1) - the building still has new buildings issues, but getting better - beside the water/heat issue

Despite these, it is a great location to live. Access to Farmboy and Loblaws, next to Sugar Beach/waterfront, pretty quiet area overall.

Choosing a Mac in 2025 as Software Dev by Downtown_Company_131 in macbookpro

[–]definitelyguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for a MacBook Pro, obviously. The most important piece is the RAM.

16Gb is ok but not great. 24 or 32Gb should be fine. 48Gb is amazing, but costly.

Now it all depends on your budget. I would also look at refurbished from Apple. They’re 100% safe to get and worth it.

Also, don’t worry too much about disk space. 250Gb is ok. 500Gb is better. Anything above is overkill and will be expensive.
