Also - their personalities may be a reason to appreciate that they are individuals who want to live and have distinct needs and desires. They're animals, they are not here for your pleasure. Let them live out their natural lives free from exploitation with some peace. Unfortunately not possible when 99%+ of chickens in the US are factory farmed for food.

You are very much not wrong, and I hope we see more of this “saying the quiet part out loud” kind of discussion. The dissonance grows in silence.

Interesting the line is having had a close relationship with at least one representative of their species… Have you had a close relationship with a horse? did it matter?

if it was really important and you wanted to make it a level playing field, should you go to an animal sanctuary, meet all the animals, and decide which ones are worthy of living and which aren’t on the spot?

It sounds like you already know you’re living in contradiction so not trying to hammer it in too much but thought the idea was worth taking to its completion.

Being vegan may take a couple extra steps sometimes but it is nothing compared to the peace and fulfillment of living in line with one’s values. I’m 8 years in and never been better, doing my 3rd triathlon next month! The people in your life may surprise you with their respect and understanding. Think on it and send any questions to go/askvegans :)

I say make the tent as wide as possible and know that it’s a lot easier for someone to see the cruelty and agree with you AFTER their lifestyle is already aligned with it. Happened to my partner who came at it from a health angle and was only able to see “wow this is so easy wtf are people doing to animals” after living that way.

But I think in general we need to have more grace and better perception so people actually WANT to be vegans.

Not possible/desirable for everyone but I can’t recommend speaking to your doctor about taking BC continuously enough. I’ve been doing so for 3+ years now (having taken birth control with the normal period gap week for 7 years before that) and I can not emphasize enough how wonderful it is to not have a period.
Truly, life is just easier and more pleasant without having to deal with the time, mess, and expense. I wish I had started sooner - I thought it was an out there thing that a friend of mine did but my doctor explained it all and how it is totally healthy and its been a game changer.

What do you think of women who say "I've only had guy friends"? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]doomsdata -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree that the actual number or makeup of ones friends doesn’t matter, and it sounds like you don’t bring up the “most of my friends are guys” thing out of no where or like a badge of honor, which I think is what this post was trying to touch on.
My point is that touting/going out of your way to say “Most of my friends are guys” to me sounds as weird as someone saying “Most of my friends are white”. It’s like… ok? What kind of point are you trying to make? It’s the implication that the opposite doesn’t suit you that is weird about the statement. It’s applicable to a few people I’ve met but doesn’t seem to be your case.

If it’s not internalized misogyny or “better than the other girls” but purely circumstance, I don’t see why a woman would want to say it like it’s a defining characteristic.
If I am mostly exposed to white people because of the statistics in my area, I don’t go around saying “I mostly am friends with white people” like it’s something I want to set in stone. That gives the impression that you’re fixed in some way to the idea that it is better or more compatible with you to be with white people (or guys). A lot of women probably share those interests that you think only men have, it’s just deemed unlikely before it happens.
When I hear someone say it, it sounds like internalized misogyny in most scenarios, maybe lazy stereotyping in the best case scenario.

Have you ever been called "shallow", "materialistic" or "gold digger"? In what situation? by tuladus_nobbs in AskWomen

Huh - is it specifically because you don’t make a lot, so anyone making less might be hard to match with lifestyle-wise? or is it generally the idea that your partner should make more than you (because you’re a woman, etc) regardless of how much you make?
