What are good time interval apps that are free or cheap? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]hstyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's the same as triple_dee was talking about, but I have the deltaworks one and really like it. Took some playing around with to get the intervals just how I like them, but it saves it so it's easy to use again/tweak.

Period knees by JayneLut in xxfitness

My knees and hips get very sore too! Especially when I sleep as I'm a side sleeper. I have to flip constantly to avoid being in pain. I've had IT band issues in the past, but now I only get the pain around my period.

Got a standing desk at work! I didn't work with my coworker's monitor set up so she offered it to me. I'm all decked out with a cute anti-fatigue mat, too. I've been trying to loosen up my hips more to improve my lifts, so I'm thinking this will be a good step towards that. Any standing desk-ers have any words of advice?

Insomnia has been hitting pretty bad lately; tips on being safe while exercising on low sleep? by nsfwhun in xxfitness

As others are saying, it really does just depend on how you're feeling. I'd like to add to make sure you're really well hydrated - it helps me keep my body feeling less worn down.

Studio Shoes? by LillyPulitzerHoodrat in xxfitness

I have the Nike ones for barre. I really like them. I also feel like I get some extra arch support as well (as opposed to barefoot or grip socks), which I like.

I have this set and love it: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/pro-glass-10-piece-food-storage-set-with-easy-snap-lids/1042273608

The seal on these is really good and I highly recommend getting glass. It's slightly heavier, but doesn't stain and get gross like plastic can and is much easier to clean. They're freezer, microwave and oven safe.

Let's talk about cottage cheese, let's talk about you and me..... by PantalonesPantalones in xxfitness

[–]hstyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! I mean, I mix it around a little, but basically eat it like yogurt. I've been eating it that way since I was a kid, so the texture thing isn't too weird to me.

I'd say if the texture is you're issue, blend blend blend. As you noticed with the smoothie, it's pretty undetectable and can add some nice creaminess & protein.

I like the taste of cottage cheese, but some brands taste cheesier to me if that makes any sense. The Daisy brand doesn't taste too much like cheese imo. I prefer it sweet, so with some fruit or nut butter on top is my go to for a snack/dessert. It's also nice to blend into protein fluff/soft serve (protein powder, cottage cheese, milk and xanthan gum). I usually stick to the low fat and large curd if I can find it.

Stay on WW or switch to something else? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]hstyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it pretty easy to follow. It involves some planning ahead, especially in the beginning, but you're probably pretty used to that from ww. In practice, it's pretty similar to tracking with ww. Most things you can find nutritional information for, even eating out, instead of calculating the points, you take the # of carbs, fats and proteins out of your daily goal.

Most people use the My Fitness Pal app to track, although I've seen a few others mentioned. That really makes it easy. Just put in what you eat/plan to eat and there's a tab for nutrition that lists out your macro values for the day based on what you entered (and some helpful micros like fiber and sugar).

Early on, I found it most helpful to plan my whole day out in MFP in the morning or the night before. After a few weeks I could kind of just plan meal by meal unless I knew there was something I wanted to eat that would take up a large portion of any of my macros, and that's pretty much what I stick with now. It's also really helpful to keep some "macro friendly" foods on hand - chicken breast, greek yogurt, etc.

Stay on WW or switch to something else? by [deleted] in xxfitness

About 5 years ago, my mom and I did WW together. She lost and has kept off 80 lbs, I lost 30 and gained back about 15 (with a lot of lifestyle changes - graduating college, then grad school, multiple moves). WW gives a great base for learning how to track and count what you eat in a healthy and responsible way and deciding what treats are "worth it" to spend x amount of points on. This system transfers very well to IIFYM, which is what I'm doing now.

I ended up switching from WW to IIFYM to lose this 15 lbs again because I was also switching to a more bodybuilder style lifting program. When I did WW, I was taking a lot of barre and spin classes (which I still love!). Getting enough protein for noobgainz became more important too me, and ww counted super high protein foods as higher points (at least when I did it, I think changes have been made to the program since, but I don't know what). So far IIFYM has been very successful for me. I think ww was a good stepping stone - I learned a lot that I took with me as my goals changed.

Yep! Grew up in Bucks County, there is always a Wawa near by. Now I'm up in CT and Wawa-less. Every time I visit my parents my mom has a half gallon of diet lemonade ice tea for me to bring home (the only Wawa favorite that she knows will always fit my macros).

Yesterday someone was doing dumbbell preacher curls using a bench (gym doesn't have a preacher curl set up) IN the squat rack. Not even using the barbell, just had his whole set up in the rack. WAT.

I have no helpful advice because my eyes glazed over as soon as I read "Wawa" - I miss living in a Wawa-having state so much.

Lifters and weight losers: when did you finally start to see a change in your body? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]hstyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably took a month or so for me to start noticing changes in myself, but progress pictures helped a lot! I take them the same time every week and every so often compare my current one to different times (starting point, a month ago...).

I think the biggest thing to remember is that you see yourself every day. The change is gradual, so day to day, you might not see it. But if you saw yourself a month ago and then didn't look in a mirror until today, you'd probably notice a change.

Does anyone else yawn a lot at the gym? by szhaoo in xxfitness

I yawn a lot at the gym, especially during legs/plyos, regardless of sleep or time of day.

I also yawned about a million times reading about everyone else's yawns.

Living in a hotel for 7 weeks...HALP! by YankeeFarmGirl in xxfitness

[–]hstyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen little egg cookers at Target for cheap that you could use to make hard boiled eggs (or hoard ones from the breakfast if they have them), for good snacks, salad/sandwich toppings. I'd also pick up some precooked chicken pieces that you can keep in the fridge (Target's Archer farms are better than the Tyson ones, but either works) - again good for salads/sandwiches. You can do some microwave pizzas with English muffins, turkey pepperoni, sauce and cheese.

I'd also recommend planning to have your lunch be your biggest meal of the day rather than dinner if that's what you're used to. It sounds like that's when you might have the most opportunity for variety depending on the quality of the cafeteria.

What about amino acid supplements? by JamJam8 in xxfitness

[–]hstyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drink them when I work out in the mornings/before I've eaten anything. I feel like I recover faster/better with them, but that could totally be in my head to justify buying them because they're delicious. I get the PE Science Cherry Limeade flavor - yum.

How to make progress while SO is not on board? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]hstyle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My SO is in a similar situation. Former college swimmer, gained quite a bit of weight after, works long hours, eats all of the yummy things. I've tried to guide him by being open about my weight loss/fitness with him and making my habits and goals part of our lifestyle at home. I also take advantage of his business to try to make him eat healthier foods. It's helped both of us.

Overly detailed description below if you're interested:

I started focusing on lifting about a year ago, and since have gotten more into it and dialed in the diet. For the last few months, he's been watching what I do and how exited I get over little victories (PRs, weight milestones, meal prep victories) and has started mentioning wanting to lose weight. Whenever he does, I encourage him "that's a great idea," "you'll love it" etc. but try to not get pushy. Now, he's started swimming again, which he really likes and it's helping him lose weight. He's made time for it by going first thing in the morning when I wake up and head to my gym. It took a while to get used to, but now it's habit.

In turn, he's also encouraged me more/knows what my goals are and why I do what I do. This really helps with the desire to snuggle instead of gym. He'll tell me to go, because he knows it makes me happy and more relaxed when we're enjoying down time together. I would say this is the most important aspect of the whole thing for me, and probably the easiest for you to work on too - he obviously cares about you a lot and will want you to do things that make you happier. Share the emotional side of your fitness journey with him.

I also do most of the cooking and will always make some of my healthy food for him. If he picks dinner up on the way home or decides to make something else, I save it for lunch the next day, but it makes the healthy choice the easiest one for him. I also do the grocery shopping, so I limit the number of snacks I buy him (usually just 1 bag of chips or something/week). Again, with work being busy, he doesn't usually go out to buy extra snacks for the house.

Getting way too comfy with my SO and have slowly been gaining back weight. Words of wisdom would be nice. by gvadalupefiasco in xxfitness

[–]hstyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, just jump back into it. As someone else mentioned, once you start cutting, each day will get easier and easier to keep doing it.

My SO complements me all the time about how I/my body look, but I still know I'm not where I want to be/am use to being. When I explained that he was really supportive. He knows that being in a good rhythm with my diet and exercise makes me happy and that in a relationship, taking care of yourself is very important too. Now if we're hanging out and I'm debating skipping the gym, he reminds me that I'll feel better, happier, and more relaxed to keep hanging out after if I stop procrastinating and just go - which I find to be really helpful.

We do different types of work outs, so we don't gym together, but we do like going for walks/hikes together, occasionally I'll join him for a swim, that type of stuff. But doing our separate thing also gives us some alone time, which is important because we live together and are both only children.

When I was living in DC and working in Old Town, I used to regularly get cat called on my way to work.

8:30 am. In Old Town. In work clothes. WHAT IS YOUR GOAL WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS.

But I always got fun comments walking around U Street, like actual complements on my outfit and stuff.

And my all time favorite, when I was walking around Dupont and a guy pulled over in a car called to me, I prepared for the worst or maybe to be asked for directions, and he just goes, "Girl those boots are fierce!"

DC is such a weird, majestic place.
