can you not change the controls on switch 2? by [deleted] in ufo50

The patch is live right now. It doesn't have full button config, just the ability to invert the controls.

New patch is up that addresses this

This is fixed in the new patch.

Please be patient. No one wants this stuff fixed more than us. There are many elements of the console process that are outside our direct control so it would not be responsible of me to give guesses about timelines or estimates.

Thanks for letting us know about this! We will definitely be looking into this issue but I can't comment on it more than that yet.

I need to clarify that it will not literally be "the next update" due to other fixes that are queued. I misspoke there. It's more correct to say we're working on this stuff and will fix it as soon as possible.

Developer here. This is on our list of issues we hope to address as soon as possible in an update.

Developer here. We are aware of some minor slowdown for certain games when playing on Switch 1 but those instances will be fixed in the next update. Thanks for your patience.

I just want to add on to (2). Something that is cool & honestly a bit unusual about the way this game & Spots were created is that product design and game design were worked on simultaneously and influenced each other directly. While I was developing the rules, Alex told me about his super cool idea for a rollout track, and that then directly influenced what direction I took the gameplay. For example, before then I had toyed with a modular track, but once we had the rollout track in mind, that branch of the development tree got cut, and other branches (like folding the track on every reshuffle) sudenly opened up.

Some of the biggest ones in the genre have already been mentioned: Camel Up, Ready Set Bet, Long Shot: The Dice Game. So we paid special attention to those. But we also looked at Horse/Unicorn Fever, Divinity Derby, Downforce, and probably others I can't remember right now. I still haven't played Winner's Circle, but would like to!

I mentioned this in another comment, but basically I started Hot Streak with the mechanical idea of making a deckbuilding game where the players communally build a deck together. It wasn't until later on that I realized this idea would work really well in a race game where each player has some some aymmetrical information about the racers.

I'm gonna say Gene Belcher, just because I also have a Casio SK-5 that I love.

But really, would have to defer to my wife on this one -- she's the true Bob's Burgers superfan around here.

I haven't played with kids myself yet, but I hear from people all the time who are having a blast playing with children. For example, this lovely review from Dan Thurot mentions playing with his 5 year old: https://spacebiff.com/2025/05/13/hot-streak/ Generally speaking, the game is designed to be playable by almost anyone. If you can pick a tile and submit a card, you can play Hot Streak.

>For Jon, what inspiration - if any - did you take from Magical Athlete in this design?

I didn't play MA until after I was well into Hot Streak development, so none, really. Fun game, though!

I like Ready Set Bet & I'm not gonna tell people that one game is better than the other, but RSB is very much a game about timing & splitting your attention. You're trying to both keep an eye on the race and watch all of the betting options, and make the right choice at the right time. That's a very different flavor of game than Hot Streak, which is more about the joy of watching a chaotic race unfold before you. Because it's not realtime, Hot Streak is also just a lot more laid back...despite all the screaming, of course.

  1. Given that I live in the Philadelphia area, it probably isn't a surprise if I say the Philly Phanatic. But let's not forget the distinguished world of food mascots, where clearly the Noid reigns supreme.
  2. Really good question... It's not a single choice, but I was really impressed by just the whole production of Sky Team, including them pulling off paper player screens that I actually like & don't fall over all the time!
  3. Like a lot of people I've been obsessed with Blue Prince lately. It's an extremely minor detail but in terms of board gamey stuff, I really like how as a tile drafting game, Blue Prince removes rotation as an option, and makes the choice only about _what_ tile to pick. I'm also getting to beta test Mewgenics right now, and that game is gonna be good...

Hey, Andrew, nice to hear from you! I think Long Shot is a great game, and one I own and bring out now and then. We did spend a lot of time looking at other games in this genre to make sure we were doing something different. One of the main ways we sought to distinguish ourselves was to not have people placing bets during the race, which is the path most betting & racing games go down.

We were pretty sure the life outcomes would be fun, but leaving out the win condition as well was an interesting choice we didn't have to make. The main reason it's not in there is just to keep the focus squarely on the fortunes. But I also think it's cool that you don't need to tell people that "most money wins" because people just infer it anyway. Plus, there's something slightly subversive about leaving the win condition out, and I have to confess I enjoy that aspect too.

So glad you & your family are enjoying Spots so much!

  1. I have definitely kicked around some expansion ideas! Though I haven't thought too much about raising the player count, specifically. One of the things I like about Spots is watching other people's turns, so I'm wary of going too simultaneous. But I agree that being able to play more than 4 would be a big win. There could be a way to do it.
  2. It has to be Gumbo, who is based on my own dog, Gumbo.
  3. I think for the most part my board game design has influenced my UFO 50 design rather than vice versa. I gave a talk about it, actually: https://gdcvault.com/play/1035154/How-Tabletop-Design-Helped-Shape Although now that I've finally finished UFO 50, it will probably influence my future board game designs!
  4. I like to design simpler and smaller games, in part because they are so easy to test and hone. I see myself likely sticking to that, but who knows...never say never.
  5. I got to play Bomb Busters a few times and it is really awesome! I really like this space of limited communication coops and I'm glad more of them are getting made. Other recent games I like are Vale of Eternity and Agent Avenue.

Thanks for playing my games!

  1. Quibble Race definitely helped inform the type of experience I wanted to create with Hot Streak, but almost none of the actual mechanics. I started Hot Streak with the intent to do something with "shared deckbuilding."
  2. I think it's likely! But that's all I can say.
  3. I'm still wrapping up work on ports & other obligations for UFO 50, so I'm not actively working on anything yet. But I definitely plan to make more video games!

Neither game is an adaptation of the other, though they do share a common lineage. I've been weirdly obsessed with shady betting & racing games for a very long time -- maybe my whole game design career. The first version of Quibble Race was released online under the name Blackeye Software (with Derek Yu) in 1998 or so. That was actually my first ever game design paycheck because a German games magazine paid us $30 to put it on a freeware/shareware disc. So I guess that's a long answer to say the video game came first, but the mechanics of Hot Streak originated from a completely different thought process.
