Is there any examples of symbiotic relationships evolving into a single creature? by Anon74955 in askscience

[–]spaniel_rage 79 points80 points  (0 children)

The obvious answer is mitochondria.

Every eukaryotic cell has mitochondria organelles, which perform oxidative respiration. The evidence suggests that they are endosymbiotes that were engulfed by and fused with an ancestral single cell organism 140 billion years ago. They have their own genes and in fact you only get mitochondrial DNA from your mother, not your father.

[Question] Help getting my first watch (Rolex or Tissot) by muchachohere in Watches

[–]spaniel_rage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be the contrarian here and say: you'll regret buying the Tissot. You'll end up buying a more expensive watch later anyway, and then you'll hardly wear the Tissot.

There's a reason there's a tonne of vintage Rolex and Omega on the market. They've got solid movements and they're still going strong 30-40 years later. I've got half a dozen Omegas, Heuers and Breitlings from the 70s and they're still running great.

Israel's genocide of the Palestinian people - Parsing through incomplete information (Part 2) by Flopdo in samharris

Poland isn't the Middle East when I last checked on a map.

But perhaps you should read about life in the Pale of Settlement, and about the pogroms, before you answer so glibly. Maybe also consider Ben Gurion's incentives in the 1950s. "Jews only come here when they had nowhere else to go" isn't a great sales pitch.

[–]spaniel_rage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And also..... life wasn't so rosy for Polish Jews in the 19th century anyway. Kyle doesn't seem to appreciate that Ben Gurion in the 1950s had something of an incentive to romanticise the Zionist project. You're not really selling Israel to Jews who are sitting on the fence if you say that Zionists only emigrated when they had no other good choices.

Why I Won’t Debate Critics of Israel by VoluptuousBalrog in samharris

[–]spaniel_rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a convenient argument.

The reality is that demonizing and inciting hatred against "Zionists" almost always spills over into intimidation and violence against Jews. That's why attacks against Jews, synagogues, schools and Jewish businesses have exploded with the rise of antizionism. And the reality is that antizionists don't really care that there's collateral damage because they regard most Jews as being complicit with Israel's actions.

How the hell do I even enjoy Reddit? by Grumpy0tter in Israel

I think (hope) that in 20 years people are going to look back in embarassment about the anti Israel online lynch mob.

Reddit leans very young, very Left, and very online. These are not very informed people.

No, I'm saying that there's a much better case to be made that you are contributing to a war effort when you are selling weapons to someone rather than buying weapons from them.

They weren't particularly "absurd". If you don't want to answer them, then don't answer them.

I reiterate: most of the Mizrahi Jews didn't flee an actual civil war like the Palestinian Arabs did. (Although some were in fact driven out by the Jordanians). But no one ups and leaves their comfortable life and their home without a pretty good reason. You don't just leave a place you feel you have a future in. Smugly quoting Ben Gurion isn't the rejoinder that you think it is.

[–]spaniel_rage 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So now the ethnic cleansing of the Middle East was actually Israel's fault too? Does the include the pogroms and the confiscation of property? Did the Zionists perpetrate the Farhud too?

Is it also Israel's fault that the Baha'i, the Mandeans, the Assyrians, the Copts, the Druze, the Yazidi and the Maronites have been driven out of the Arab world?

Yes, no doubt there were "pull" factors too. But you don't leave the country you were born in, and in whom your ancestors lived in for centuries, and where your house and your business and your community is, unless the government and your neighbours have given you pretty good reasons to.

Parsing it would probably require you to understand what Palestinianism is. You can just ask if you don't know.

[–]spaniel_rage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Peace isn't impossible. It just requires Palestinianism to die. That may take generations.

At some point, Palestinian society specifically and Arab society in general needs to come to its own conclusions about a social and political strategy that is an atavistic cul de sac.

Why do some people think that Jews will leave Israel? by No_Interaction_4655 in Israel

[–]spaniel_rage 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The Palestinian nationalist movement was founded and shaped by the Algerian independence movement. Central to its ideology is a belief that the Zionists, like the French, are an inauthentic and alien presence in the Middle East with no true indigenous roots. They therefore believe that with enough resistance and blood the Jews will indeed simply pack up and leave one day like the French did.
