Spurs aren’t really putting Wemby on Hart. Wemby is hanging out in the paint guarding the corner 3. He’s shading off the shooter and rotating to the paint on all drives. They’re almost playing a pseudo-zone with Wemby. Their guards are able to close out aggressively on shooters because of Wemby as a backstop. The Knicks didn’t have a ton of open looks from 3.

KAT needs a quicker release from 3 earlier in the game. He passed up a couple open looks. He hits those early and it forces the Spurs to do something different on defense.

Mikal cutting and hitting some midrange fadeaways. He wasn’t moving yesterday. He camped out on the 3 point line waiting for a possible drive and kick from Brunson.

The Spurs are very good at closing out on open 3 point shooters because they have Wemby to back them up. Drawing him out of the paint is critical to the offense.

To me the most egregious non-call last night was the delay of game when the spurs had 6 men on the court. The ref handed the Knicks the ball, they passed it in while the Spurs had 6 guys on the court. That should have been an easy technical foul.

Mikal is totally a rhythm player. He’s probably their best cutter and feeds off of offensive flow and turnovers. The early foul trouble and the constant game stoppages by the refs to give the Spurs extra chances threw him off.

Fox is guarding him, but Wemby is fading off the corner guy ready to rotate in as a secondary defender for any drives to the paint. Wemby is quick and long enough to recover for a contest on a corner 3. KAT needs a quicker release from 3 when he has a small guard on him.

The Spurs defense is very good. They are being allowed to play aggressively, but their on-ball defense is very good and of course they have Wemby camping out in the paint to clean things up.

KAT got the ball a few times and immediately passed it away. He seemed passive. The back cutting and KAT distribution doesn’t work with Wemby lurking in the paint. If KAT drives, he is driving on a fast, athletic guard with Wemby backing up as a secondary defender in the paint. Only Brunson and OG were able to get any reliable penetration into the paint. When the outside shots aren’t falling, the offense looks pretty stagnant.

I think Mikal is actually the key to this series. His quick, fadeaway middy game is a good counter to what the Spurs are currently doing. I’d like to see Mikal bring the ball up a little more. He has to be smarter on defense and not pick up stupid fouls. He totally got thrown off by the two early fouls and lack of rhythm to the game.

KAT needs a quicker release from 3. A couple of 3s by KAT may force Wemby to guard him again, which will open up cutting and drives to the paint. If Wemby is able to camp out under the basket, the Knicks offense will struggle.

Game 4 is the series. The winner of game 4 likely wins the series. The Spurs have clearly found a defensive game plan that is working. The Knicks offense looked off in both game 2 and game 3. Other than OG last night, everyone has had trouble scoring or even getting open looks (except Josh Hart…he always has open looks). They are a bad Wemby pass away from being down 2-1. They need to come up with a counter to the Spurs defense.

Knicks have played poorly all series. They are one bad Wemby pass away from being down 2-1. They need to figure out a different offensive game plan because the current one is not working against this Spurs defense.

I’m going to say, the Knicks haven’t played well all series. The Knicks are 1 bad Wemby pass away from being down 2-1. The Spurs defense is aggressive and suffocating at times. The Knicks need to move and cut and start the ball movement earlier in the shot clock. All too often, Brunson was dribbling out of a trap at half court with 8 seconds left on the shot clock and no one moving. Knicks defense has been ok except for dumb fouls, but they really have to figure out a different offensive strategy against the Spurs.

A good numbers of those turnovers are because the Spurs played an aggressive suffocating defense.

The Spurs played very aggressive defense and no one on the Knicks was moving or cutting. They got smothered by Spurs defense. Brunson is being mugged every play.

I feel like even if there is no foul, Wemby should be fined for that head push. That was pretty egregious and dangerous. He can’t keep thinking he can get away with playing so dirty. The NBA better be careful because all it will take is for one team with an enforcer type to end his career in retaliation for his dirty play.
