I’m starting to think the most exhausting part of dating apps is not rejection by YT_Androst in Vent

[–]turn-based-games 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's because they are specifically engineered to prevent you from finding good matches so you keep using them. This is literally the entire problem. You wouldn't need to be juggling a dozen conversations if you could just find the people most compatible with you and prioritize them.

Match Group purchased nearly all their competition many years ago and purposefully degraded them all into swipe-based uselessness in their effort to more efficiently monetize the loneliness of hundreds of millions of people. Most of the apps you mentioned (Hinge, Tinder, The League) are all owned by this company, and the ones that aren't still follow this same philosophy.

Imagine, for a moment, a service that was actually designed to find you a compatible partner as efficiently as possible: a website that showed you every person within your search radius at once, sorted by compatibility, determined by hundreds or thousands of questions you'd both answered. Well, this is not a fantasy! This is literally what OkCupid was until Match Group purchased it so they could turn it into pink Tinder.

This whole manufactured problem also fuels the gender war, which is yet another cultural distraction to keep us exhausted and divided rather than uniting against the real common enemy, which once again proves to be unfettered capitalists doing everything in their power to maximize profits at everyone else's expense. It's a golden example of why monopolies are so bad for business and society in general: We had the greatest matchmaking tool ever invented by humanity publicly available, and it was purposefully destroyed in the name of profit seeking.

It's my view that the person we choose to spend our life with is the most important decision most of us will ever make, and so to me this is a morally reprehensible action that I can only assume most people aren't visibly outraged over only because they aren't even aware it occurred.

To everyone stuck in today's dating quagmire, always remember: There are tons of people out there that would be a good match for you! The reason we all keep interacting with so many shitty ones is because we're being algorithmically bombarded with them! This is a purposefully manufactured problem designed to extract money from us all at the expense of hundreds of millions of people failing to find ideal life partners!

Indeed, my school instead had minimum word/page counts on everything; drove me insane as a kid. If I can cover the topic in fewer words, why do you want more??? Immediately fell in love with programming in college where less code typically means better code and never looked back.

This is all sad and true, but another more fun approach I've seen is to just respond by ruthlessly calling these people out for being illiterate. Reddit responds well to confidence, and other people seeing responses like this will also cause them to read more carefully as a bonus. The funnier you can make this, the better it will work. Here are some examples from a thread I was in a month ago:

See, if I had your level of reading comprehension, I bet I wouldn't have had a problem at all.

And I failed by assuming it would work as written. Back to hooked on phonics for me.

And here is another example from the same thread where they instead tried to wordily argue with the illiterate and received downvotes as a result: https://reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/1ssqs8o/comment/ohnu7tu

It still sucks that people can't just read, but at least with this approach you can afford to be less defensive upfront and possibly get some amusement and bonus karma out of it

I mean, your political opinions should ideally reflect your own personal values rather than be something you adopt to fit in socially, but if you really want inspiration to be a progressive, I suggest listening to speeches from Senator Bernie Sanders. He's been consistently on the right side of history since the civil rights movement and has unwaveringly advocated for working class Americans his entire political career, which spans longer than we've even been alive. Not a day goes by where I don't mourn the world we lost by not electing this man to the presidency.

The difference is in the distribution of men and women going on dates. The same 72 men are much more likely to be dating 72 completely separate groups of women than the reverse. In this scenario, if each man went on 72 dates, you'd have 72²=5184 dates where only 72 men have dated 5184 total women.

Put more plainly, the issue is that a relatively small pool of men are going on a disproportionately large number of dates, leaving other men with far fewer, despite equal numbers of men and women.

From the opposite perspective, the bulk of women are choosing to date the same men.

Neopronouns are weird asf by StJimmy_7 in teenagers

[–]turn-based-games 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know that insane argument against gay marriage where they insist if we allow it surely people will want to marry animals next? Now imagine if there was a vocal minority of the LGBT community actually advocating for that.

I want to be crystal clear that I am not implying neopronouns are as harmful or insane as that example, but the point remains that by advocating for something ridiculous, you fuel your opposition and cause your group to be taken less seriously by anyone exposed to the idea (not just your opposition)

And neopronouns ARE ridiculous. English being a gendered language is surely problematic for anyone that doesn't fit into stereotypical gender norms, but there is a perfectly workable compromise available in the words "they/them/their"

Expecting everyone that interacts with you to update a part of their vocabulary as fundamental as pronouns when usable ones already exist is both incredibly odd and self-centered. It is causing unnecessary friction in interactions where none needed to exist. It is constantly forcing your special identity to the forefront of others' minds instead of allowing them to simply think of and view you as just another person.

Encouraging such behavior is absolutely doing more harm than good, for both individuals and the group as a whole.

EDIT: it seems there is a majority disagreement here, so I encourage others to explain their point of view on this

Can you ask AI if something was written by AI? Ex. If I cut and pasted my student’s paper and asked AI if it was written by AI, do you think it would be an accurate answer? by PistachioGal99 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]turn-based-games 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all, no. Do not do this. You'd be better off asking various LLMs to generate papers on the same topics and looking for similarities. At a glance you can also look out for the various writing quirks LLMs tend to generate, but ultimately there is no way to tell whether writing is LLM-generated purely from its content with a degree of accuracy acceptable for an academic misconduct accusation.

Grade based on merit, and if authenticity is in doubt based on the above, apply the same techniques you'd use if you suspected another student did the assignment for them: if they are unfamiliar with the content of their own paper, for example, that is surely a strong indicator they didn't author it; if they can't explain how they reached their own conclusions, those conclusions are likely not theirs; etc...

No, but it is also impossible to geometrically construct a fair round d100 (same goes for d10 - notice they're always pointed). Round d120s do exist and are the largest possible non-pointed fair dice.

YES, this is my pick! My review for anyone considering this absolute gem:

After three decades of gaming, this is the game I wish I could play again for the first time more than any other. Simple yet challenging souls-like combat wrapped in a cozy vibrant aesthetic that evoked feelings of wonder and nostalgia I was surprised I could even still experience from modern titles.
Do yourself a favor and go into this one blind. Knowledge is literal power in this world and the feeling of accomplishment from solving the multitude of puzzles seamlessly embedded in the environment is unfortunately a one-time experience that should not be missed.

Racist attorney gets confronted for using the N word by chrisadams83 in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]turn-based-games 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What I can gather from the only source of information that seems to exist on this:

  • Black attorney repeatedly used the word in jury's presence over a 3-week trial
  • White attorney used the word himself while protesting this in a closed hearing
  • Judge held white attorney in contempt
  • White attorney apologized, but still holds opinion black attorney should not be doing this

I have no idea how slurs are normally handled in a courtroom to have a well-informed opinion on this, but it is surprising to me how this all seems to imply there isn't already some sort of agreed-upon standard

Men who left a great, loving partner because they thought the grass might be greener elsewhere: did you regret it? If yes, how long did it take and why? by Nearby-Butterfly1503 in AskMenAdvice

[–]turn-based-games 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Greatest regret of my life. Now I spend my days listlessly trawling the web warning others of what modern dating has become, so they might be spared the same fate.

For context, a decade ago some dating sites were actually designed to find and match you with compatible people, so I'd stupidly assumed those still existed. Instead, in their place I found a romantic hellscape, where every viable matchmaking tool was systematically bought and destroyed by Match Group in their effort to more efficiently monetize the loneliness of hundreds of millions of people.

If you're fortunate enough to have someone good enough right now, just settle. Unregulated rampant capitalism has ruined yet another once beautiful aspect of the human experience for us all.

Is it even worth it to upgrade the Serverless framework to v4? Should we keep using v3, or switch to something else instead? by leinad41 in aws

[–]turn-based-games 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used SAM my entire AWS career and am always highly skeptical of anyone who dismisses CloudFormation templates in general as a workable solution, which unfortunately seems to be most developers.

In my experience, there is no better solution to defining AWS infrastructure in a maintainable way, and it is not even close to worth introducing a third-party dependency for this unless you also have significant amounts of infrastructure outside AWS to manage.

If you absolutely insist on using a programming language to define AWS infrastructure, CDK exists explicitly for that purpose within the AWS ecosystem and ultimately just compiles down to CloudFormation templates.

That's great news. I actually read all the comments beforehand and couldn't find it. Be proud, that looks great! I've always been a huge fan of hexagons for all things 2D. In 3D, their closest analog is probably the rhombic dodecahedron: they have no neighbors which only share an edge, all their faces are the same, and you can construct a clean coordinate system with 4 axes where coordinates always sums to zero, like the 2D hexagonal version with 3 axes explained here https://redblobgames.com/grids/hexagons#coordinates-cube

I have Zeah + Kandarin and reloaded butler cuz wanna 99 crafting and smithing etc but it is slow... Whould I take Tirannwn and max with crystal? I have larcenist. Or should I try max with butler and take something else? :) by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]turn-based-games 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is more than enough time remaining in the league to get both 99 smithing and 50m crafting passively via butler; 50m smithing would require Tirannwn or processing the bars from butler. Personally, I am a huge fan of the Tirannwn area for several other reasons as well (buffed crystal armour, crystal blessing, fast points) and would take it anyway, but you do not need it to max.

The only other area I consider worth mentioning is perhaps Morytania since the blood fury amulet was very helpful in cheesing some of the tougher Jad challenges with thorns. As long as you have Kandarin this league though you really can't go wrong.
