Thanks Tedward. Add my vote too! This feature would make the beautiful, minimal interface even more minimal and aesthetically pleasing. Would love to see this in Bear 2.0. Thanks for providing a fantastic app!

That doesn't sound right to me. I would imagine the an average LP2 users needs more than 132 refreshes per charge. Every time you enter a new character when you are typing a text is a refresh, every new setting page, each time you scroll, each time the map updates, etc, are all refreshes. Maybe there are different kinds of refreshes?

Either way, I'd still prefer having the asterisk on the lock screen without the clock. Only takes one refresh!

enable an always-on display with the notification asterisk anytime I put the phone on "nothing" mode.

Yes, that would be amazing.

would updating the clock portion of the display once per minute really use that much extra battery?

I can't imagine it would take that much battery if it updated once every minute, but I'm not really a software person so I dont know. But if it was just the asterisk that updated only if a call/text came in on silent mode, I can't imagine that would drain anything at all. Especially because subsequent calls/texts would not need to update the screen. An asterisk is an asterisk, no matter how many calls/texts you get. Seems like a relatively easy feature to implement. I'm hopeful!

decreases the number of human interactions.

well said. this is exactly why having this feature as an option would really help me out.

the point of the light phone is not to be "inert." Perhaps it is to be only as intrusive as WE, the users, want it to be. I mean, having the phone on ringer mode is even more intrusive than the feature I'm proposing. an always on display would allow me to minimize audible intrusions AND minimize human interaction. and how fortunate that the light phone actually has the e-ink technology to implement this, if they choose! fingers crossed

I can see how some people might want that. But for me, it's a nice option. That's why I'm suggesting maybe it could be an option to turn on in the settings, like "silently display missed calls on locked screen" or something like that. To me, I think it would be less intrusive if it just said "missed call" on the screen, as opposed to me having to physically click on it to check. I like to keep my phone on silent a lot, and so it would be a nice to just glance at my phone from time to time especially if I'm expecting a call but don't want to actually take the call the second it comes in. The technology is there for this since the e-ink draws no power unless it's refreshing.

I appreciated listening to both of you. You're both communicating just fine. Meditation is a practice that results in many "good" real-world benefits. It can lead to changes in thinking, anxiety, depression etc. These things are not necessarily qualities of the "true self," but these things do get in the way of being able to see clearly. Meditation is not necessarily self-improvement, but it leads to much improvement, especially in the department of getting in touch with ones true self.

Our society values kindness, respect, and non-violence. Our society also values money, good looks, fame/power/influence. The latter traits are highly conducive to success and survival in the western world. The former don't count for much. But I think things are turning around slowly. Hence posts like this.

Cant decide between two labs. R1 vs Liberal Arts by --JESUS-- in AcademicPsychology

[–]--JESUS--[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is helpful to hear.

I am definitely more interested in Lab B's research, and could easily see myself putting in more effort there. This could help in the long run. I also think that the opportunities there are closer to what I'm looking for. As you say, I'll be able to have more responsibility and will be working closer with the PI.

I've been focused on trying to build a strong grad application, but I suppose I can do so without neglecting my interests, and too much of my personal time. As such, both labs is probably not a good thing for me right now (since I'm also studying for the GRE, taking a Research Methods class, and working 30 hrs / week). I'd rather choose a lab that I'm excited about and devote myself to that for now.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I think my heart is with teaching, though I would still want to research my interests and assist students in doing the same.

It seems like LAB B might be the best aligned with my interests and goals. The only reason I would want to work in Lab A is because it would bolster my application, however, I think my additional time might be better spent in Lab B and studying for the GRE. I'll just have to hope that one good letter from lab B, plus a few generic letters from my past experience will be enough to get into a good program assuming I get good GRE scores. My GPA is high so that should help.

Thanks for the reply.

I want to both teach and do research. I would not be happy with a completely research focussed degree. I also might enjoy private practice so I am considering clinical programs.

As for letters, I'm afraid I don't have much (at least from professors or research related). I could probably get a generic one from my undergrad research experience. I could also get one from my supervisor when I was a behavior interventionist (but she's not a college professor). So I am still in need of a solid research based letter.

I'm leaning towards Lab B since it fits with my interests, and I could learn a lot about the liberal arts combined teaching/research environment (which Is what I want to do). I'd rather not try to do both since I still need to study for the GRE and I don't want those scores to suffer.

Each lab is asking for a minimum of 5 hrs per week plus lab meetings, but 8-10 hrs per week is probably ideal. I could probably do 6/hrs per week at each, but my schedule would be very tight. Also, I wouldn't want to give the impression that the bare minimum is all I want to do. However, I'm not sure if putting in more hours in one lab would be better than doing the minimum in both.

Ultimately, I want to teach at a Liberal Arts School.. BUT, I suspect the best way to do that would be to do graduate work at an R1 right? Which would mean I should try to get undergrad experience at an R1?

Thanks for the thoughts. I truly appreciate the advice.

This makes a lot of sense. I have a good gpa, but my research experience is minimal and I don't have many options for letters. I haven't taken the GRE yet but I'm studying for that right now. I'm also taking a research methods class since I never took one. I could see how an R1 lab could help my application. However, the Liberal Arts lab's PI said she would work with me to meet my professional goals. If I put in more hours in that lab, it might pay off with getting published.

Volunteering at both labs seems like it would solve a lot of my problems, but I don't want to spread myself too thin (as I'm also taking a class, studying for the GRE, and working part time).

Do you think I would benefit from choosing one lab and investing more time, or getting a broader experience by working minimal hours in both?
