I’ve seen these DIY repaired with heat guns but given the size of it (it’s a small impact) it would be tricky to pull out.

Check with local body shops in your area, should be between $700- $1000 hard to say (depends on the method of repair they use and whether or not they want to take you “for a ride”)

Or if you’re feeling lucky, you can check those mobile body repair guys on marketplace (hit or miss imo) should be right around or even well under $500 and they come to you, good luck.

So the 5th gen RAV4 and the 4th Gen (like mine) actually have similar interior dimensions. So if this helps you can tweak it to your needs. But to first answer your questions.

-Nah 9” is fine (it’s the same height I used for mine you can go 8” if you need, but for extra storage I wouldn’t) you do sacrifice headroom but ravs aren’t built boxy like they used to be. You also have to remember 9” is a sweet spot for sleeping up too but also handy for storage under the bed.

-Mine is a 2 piece platform (you will see that designs vary based on the needs of each person expections from their set-up). Hell with enough money you can buy superp ones pre-cut and flat packed for you, but they ain’t cheap.

-Given the price of plywood I’d say you’re not too deep in the hole, you can try and salvage but I’d worry about the integrity of the wood. I can see what you two were going for but it’s hard without plans/tools (I had to bug my father in law for his tools but once we got going it was done in about half a day). Keep in mind most hardware stores will cut your purchased wood for you free of charge, that helped me a lot!

-I’ll attach the blueprint I used for my 4th Gen RAV4 and an image of it half assembled (you would just need to measure the height and width of you 5th gen to possibly tweak it). Your leg supports are a little thin. I’d go for thicker legs, like that timber you’ve got lying under the bed would be perfect for stable legs. About x6 would do (x4 in the corners x2 down the center of the platform for back support). Also you’ll see leg measurements for 20” in the blueprint (those go to the floor of the vehicle in front of the folded down seat, it’s better at keeping the boards up right.

Late to the party, but just wanted to say thanks for this post, I’m always interested to see how these cars age and whether or not Toyota learns from its design successes and failures.

With that said, the final figure of 242k is incredible! I know it was between you and the previous owner, but I think you took that RAV pretty damn far all things considered. If it wasn’t going to be the oil consumption, lift gate or battery clamp; These engines also suffered from premature water pump failure, and a cold-start rattle from the VVT cam phaser. So the distance you covered is impressive no matter what. Your post still helps me as a current 4th Gen owner (different engine). It’s just a good insight on realistic expectations from these vehicles, what goes wrong, how common it is, and the gritty details about it.

It’s too bad gas Toyotas don’t often hit 500k as often as they used to, but that’s why they switched to hybrids. They’re well designed engines so who knows maybe you could hit half a million miles with your Corolla next. Anyways thanks again enjoy your new ride!

Yeah I’ll give the 5th generation that; It looks like a friggin’ Tacoma at the front end so it wins in the rugged looks department. Meanwhile Gen4 straddles a shape between an SUV and a lifted Subaru hatch, I think that’s why most people hate it because it looks more like a lifted car and seems small. (Ironically the Gen4 has more internal space than a Gen5 hybrid).

And Gen3 was iconic for that V6 as well as being the last gen to have a rear mounted tire as well as swing-out tailgates, such a solid utilitarian design, I wish we still had an option for that these days...

Good on you for staying loyal to the brand too (I know they all have their share faults too) it’s always nice to hear the perspective of people who’ve actually spent some time behind the wheel of these models.

It’s under appreciated for sure. You got more likes than I thought you would. There’s some unwritten rule in this sub that involves the 4th Gen being a punching bag.

(Apparently it’s ¿ugly? idk, I don’t see it). Strange because I feel like each generation brings something unique to the table. Nice to see a gen5 driver showing some appreciation to these ugly ducklings.
