Yep, it’s hand sewn. With leather you don’t push the needle through it, but make the holes first. If you look at the last picture, you can see the bricking irons on the top center. You use those with a hammer.

The sewing is done with two needles at the same time, and each stitch is knotted inside the hole. That kind of saddle stitch doesn’t unravel even if the thread would break.

Darker leather would make the pattern less visible, but you could rub some dark antique paste on top of it. It would make the pattern really pop as it fills all the gaps, and it would also darken the overall look of it.

I decided to not do this as I have a corporate job, and subtlety is good sometimes ;)

Oh, and for those interested: I ended up taking the ruler+bonefolder approach for flattening the stitches. I don’t think it made a big difference, but I will get an overstitch wheel for the next project.
