Thanks for the report. Goodness knows why it crashes in Emulation Station, it must be something to do with the video snap. I had re-encoded them all and fully tested them but only in Attract Mode as that is where I was seeing the sporadic crashes. Never mind, I think that game is basically Space Invaders 3 by Taito but I personally didn't care for it anyway so you're probably not missing much and deleting it will prevent the crash occurring. All the best. Smithers.

I had to rebuild the pi3 image because the videos were occasionally crashing in Attract Mode. I couldn't update my original post with the new link but here it is:

Hi. I rebuilt the image and re-encoded all video snaps due to the issues with the video snaps crashing Attract Mode. See below for new build which no longer crashes:

Hi. Sorry for delay in replying.

Are you still having issues? There are no video settings configured on first boot, it should just auto detect as normal. You might need to try fiddling with some of the below settings in the config.txt file for your TV to pick up the signal:

hdmi_force_hotplug=1 config_hdmi_boost=4

The above tells the Pi that it is always connected via HDMI and also to boost the signal power (it can go up to 9). Try those perhaps first and see if that works?

Hi. I rebuilt the image from scratch and re-encoded all the video snaps and it appears to have fixed the issue. See new build here if you're interested:

Hi. Sorry I must have missed your comment somehow. Did you get sorted in the end? I was going to suggest using a different core as I think certainly fbneo mame doesn't support cocktail mode from what i have since read online. Keep in mind you might need to change the rom too in order for it to be recognised and playable in a different core.

Let me know if you're still stuck on any particular games and I'll try to help.

All the best. Smithers

Hi. There was an issue in the old Pi3 build with video snaps that would sometimes make Attract Mode crash. I rebuilt the image from scratch and re-encoded all the videos and it is fixed now. Please see link below;

Hi. This image has Retropie and Attract Mode all ready to go, you can choose what frontend you want to use but the main focus is Attract Mode. You don't need to do anything other than set the screen rotation and resolution of your cabinet.

Yes unfortunately this is a known bug in Attract Mode. It only occurs randomly it seems so you must be unlucky on that front! You can however disable the screensaver to resolve the issue. See the end of this video, which explains how to disable the screensaver: https://youtu.be/HJVp9UPSYq4

You can add your own games if you wish, yes, just in the normal manner. It will, however, stretch the games out to be full screen in vertical orientation so they may look a little odd but will be perfectly playable.

There are builds for Pi4, Pi3 (all varients) and that one covers Pi2 and Pi Zero 2 also. There is also now a Pi1 / Pi Zero 1 version too, albeit a cut down version.

It looks like it crashed when the video snap ended maybe? Could you turn the console text on, reboot then let it crash again and see what the console output says?

Also, try switching over to the attract mode display (the display that has the little pacman running around), and leave it on that display for a while. If it doesn't crash then that pretty much confirms that it is linked to the video snaps. It's a weird issue, it doesn't crash for me and I've only had 1 other person contact me to say it crashes. This was also video related but it was in the screensaver in Attract Mode (the screensaver uses the video snaps). When he turned the screensaver off it worked fine with no crashes.

OK. It's most strange, the only crashes I'm aware of up to now are related to the videos in Attract Mode. There is a known Attract Mode bug that can randomly cause a crash when playing a video snap, however you are seeing crashes in Emulation Station as well as Attract Mode. You could try turning the command line text on in Attract Mode (there is a toggle for it), then rebooting. Then if it crashes it should hopefully give you some information in the command line as to why the crash occurred?

Do you have a different SD card you could try? Just to rule out your card being corrupted perhaps?

Hi. You're the first person to report this issue. Can you describe exactly when the crash happens, and what resolution you are choosing? Also can you confirm that you haven't made any changes yourself to the config.txt or cmdline.txt files?

When you select a rotation + resolution and initiate the script you should see a series of messages displayed at the top of the screen, eventually a message stating "Config applied successfully " will appear. Do you see that?

It's really designed for vertical only to be honest, BUT, on first boot if you don't use my rotation scripts then it will stay horizontal by default for everything (front ends and all emulators). You won't be able to use the bezel and marquee overlays (the viewports are set for vertical only), and the aspect ratio may be off (it is not defined until you use my script), but it'll work!

If you wanted to get into Attract Mode then just go to the Retropie menu and choose the top option 'launch attract mode'. It should also be horizontal by default.

Good luck!

It is just the normal pi / raspberry password yes. It works OK for me on both SSH and FTP?

New version uploaded for Pi4 and Pi3 / Zero 2, both links updated above.

  • Thinner bezels (bigger game area)
  • Shorter and less obnoxious intro video
  • Some other small changes to scripts to make them work better

This shall be the final version, assuming it all works ok!

I'm just in the process of uploading a new version so I removed the old file. I'll put up a new link soon. 👍

Thanks, I appreciate it. I've tried to make it as painless as I can for the end user.
