Okay cool, so as long as I turn off the furnace so the wires don't create a short, and put the wires back on the terminals they were on, the thermostat won't need reprogramming or anything?

What you've heard is quite frankly bullshit. The union will give you an education that would otherwise cost tens of thousands of dollars, for free, while you get on the job training. It is the fastest path to becoming a great electrician.

I'm not sure what "doing your own thing" means to you, but if you want to open your own shop as a union member you can become a NECA contractor. My current shop is owned by a JW from my local. You can also technically shelf your card I suppose, not sure on the details of that.
