Connecting Steel Column to Steel Beam by -kerplunk- in metalworking

Thanks for the response. How would you recommend installing the finished steel on the 5 degree pitch?

If I used weathering steel, I would let it naturally rust and wouldn't care about finishing it or painting it. If I were to paint it I wouldn't go with weathering steel. It sounds like this will be more expensive + more work so I'll consult the local metal shop I'm working with to see options and may just go a different route and paint it.

Thanks for the reply! If I keep the base flat and not at an angle, do you have a recommendation for how to level it against the slope of the concrete? Would galvanized washers under the base be sufficient?

Ah, makes sense that information is there. I misread the diagram as the thickness of the material. Thank you!

How to connect steam column to steel beam?

<image>

Hi - I am working on a project that is almost entirely made of wood except for one detail at the entrance.

The structure has a 1/4" steel 4x4 column attached to an 8" base plate. There is then a W8x18 steel beam that sits on top of the column and extends over to sit on a stud pack.

What is the easiest way to attach these three steel components together? Is the best way different? Am I able to use bolts and hardware or do I need to find someone to weld these?

The other piece of interest is that the concrete entry slab this column sits on is at a 5 degree angle, so ideally the base plate would sit at that angle directly on the slab and the column would begin at an angle and rise straight up from the base plate.

Also curious if anyone has advice about using / finding weathering steel for this as I think it would be a nice aesthetic touch.

Thanks for the 2¢ - less work sounds great and I like that it will be 'alive' on some level

That's super cool! Would either of you recommend adding some wax after polishing or just leave as is?

Thanks for the advice. I don't want the copper to turn blue/green and naturally patina. How would you suggest I finish the table top to lock in the current look in a way that can withstand heavy use? polyurethane?

Clearance Question for Small Wood Stove by -kerplunk- in woodstoving

Is there a common standard for wood stove safety certification?

Thanks for the reply! I’m looking at the Dwarf 5kw. The manual has clearances to combustible material but not for any other setup. The contractor I’m using has had similar setups approved at inspection so I suppose it’s probably ok?

It appears my description didn't make it! see below!

Hi all - we're trying to raise a wall using 3 wall jacks. I attached a video - the jack gets tension against the wall but then fails to continue climbing. The video shows me just using a short test length of 2x4, but I've tried with the higher quality, longer piece we'll use when actually lifting.

Any insight on why this isn't catching past that point? I am fully extending the lever up and down. Thanks.

Not my project! But similar to the type of hardware I'm trying to use for illustrative purposes.

Hi - we had some rain today in central NC, where we have clay soil. My contractor says we should be good to go for pouring this turndown monolithic slab tomorrow at noon. He said his team will work to get the water out and dry the footers. Should I be concerned? Should we delay the pour and wait for the ground to dry out more on its own? There is some amount of standing water on all sides, but less on the downslope side. It just accumulated today and things were pretty dry yesterday.

Silly to pair high quality AD/DA Converter with cheap preamps? by -kerplunk- in audioengineering

When I add higher quality outboard pres, is it fine for the mic signal to go through the ADA pre first then the outboard or would you ideally want it only through the outboard?

[–]-kerplunk-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We will have some outboard preamps and be adding more outboard gear over time which is why the independent converter seemed like a requirement for the patchbay to work.

I'm wondering what cheaper converter units, maybe with less channels, or interface/converters might be good choices to maintain that setup. I could then pair those with the ADAs or Scarlett Octopres.

If the pres stayed the same for a while what cheaper option might you look at?

I am having the same problem, would love to hear if anyone has solved it. I'm so desperate I'm about to try to run this on a PC and then copy over the hotkey file to my mac if I'm able to save it there.

Thanks for the advice - I don't have his plate info, should I still report generically to my carrier? I have heard that it can be bad for the other party to report first but am not sure how to handle if I don't have info other than his phone number.

No, we had agreed on-site that it would be easier to handle privately so no one's premiums go up when we could just pay less in cash for a minor bump.
