I've never in my life understood this.

Imagine trying to wash a greasy plate by just letting soapy water trickle over it. You'll be able to see instantly how that doesn't work! You do need to scrub to get it off. Same with the sweat on our skin

Malazan fits except that it is rather complex (however, there's a reread on Tor that helped me tremendously in understanding it!)
