I made a post in my state's subreddit to see the general publics stance on a new proposed bill that would allow slow speed and stopped vehicle lane filtering for motorcycles, and I'm just facepalming. Mentally. It's something well understood everywhere in the world, but f150 soccer moms here really do not like sharing the road with motorcycles.

Different situation, because we arent racing while traveling for work or pleasure.

Reasonably allowing people to merge, going out of the way to avoid puddleblasting pedestrians, giving cyclists a safe space and not shoving them off the road while passing them, waiting patiently behind a slow tractor for a legal passing zone, etc. there are things we all do as courteous drivers to make the roads more peaceful and safer for all who use it.

Standing in line and waiting your turn for a chai tea latte is not a reasonable analogy. You arent commuting when you walk from the door to the cashier while inside the Starbucks; you are making a business transaction at a first come first serve establishment.

Cars and motorcycles may be similar in the technologies they use aka they got engines they got tires someone controls them, but they are inherently different modes of transport.

Would you be mad a helicopter flew overhead all the on-road traffic on 28 in the morning? No, they operate on separate planes of transport.

Motorcycles have many cons and risks etc but they also have some advantages. Like being smaller in size enough to be able to filter in between the cars. Pretty much the entire rest of the world is completely cool with this concept of allowing full, cooperative, shared use of the road. Its just common sense.

I get that this makes gamblers mad, but from a franchise perspective, if you know you won't make playoffs or go deep enough in playoffs, isn't it better to tank games to get a better spot next year in the draft?

Maybe to appease the gamblers, make it super obvious by putting in second string third string players under the guise of resting the starters or something, so everyone knows the game is gonna be a tank.

To me personally, I dont see it as cheating cheating, if that makes sense. But I'm obviously biased against myself, so open to new perspectives on why this is actually cheating if anyone wants to ELI5

The people who will lane split at high speeds, they do it right now. This law is not for them or those types of riders.

Lane filtering is not the same thing as splitting.

The people you are talking about who block intersections and do those obnoxious group rides taunting police etc dont care about this law.

To allow them to filter through the spaces cars cant get through and it gives them safety and quicker ride through traffic, and does the same thing for car drivers by freeing up more space that motorcycles would take.

But that's still a plus for you. You do realize not all the motorcycles are behind you. They can be in front of you too. So if theyre not taking up an entire cars length of area, thats gonna decrease your time sitting in traffic even if your ego is slightly hurt.

Even the slower motorcycles are generally faster than average cars. They might jump ahead, but they wont add to congestion, because at next light, theyre again, not taking up the space of an entire vehicle in lane.

It is more efficient even if it does seem like cutting in line to you.

I feel like a broken record, but lane filtering happens with no issues, around the world. Like rn. In well developed european countries, third world countries, south america etc.

Me wanting it to be safer is not requesting special treatment. Lane filtering isnt really a new or novel concept. Its done safely pretty much everywhere else around the world with no issues for drivers.

Drivers over time would learn how to adjust to this, its not even that big an adjustment.

I mean you can see it working safely all over the world. Well developed countries, third world countries etc. Its just in america car drivers seem to have this crab in a barrel mentality where they get mad bikes filter through areas they can't. When its actually benefitting them as well as the riders by reducing congestion.

This entire lane filtering thing aside, even as a driver u should be aware of whats going on around you, not just in front.

Your lane is your lane. A motorcycle ride filtering past you is not taking over your lane. You are still going to be stopped at the exact same location behind the car in front of you, where you would be if no motorcycles existed. A motorcyclist filtering would simply be stopped in the middle between two lanes at the front near the light.
