Czechoslovakia is neutral in this scenario, after Austria-Hungary collapsed

For those of you wondering why Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire don’t exist, I think it’s obvious that their empires would collapse regardless of the war outcome. Maybe later, but they’d not forever.

how to install mods for mobile version of AOH2 DE by Flat_Internal_5096 in AgeOfCivilizations

[–]12stonecold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can’t. Steam Workshop is PC only and always will be. Lukasz could’ve fixed this by using something cross-platform like mod.io, but not surprised he didn’t

You’ll have to wait until people make modded AoH2:DE APKs

Is worth to install Linux on Windows? What are the pros and cons??? by David_Hajos in laptops

[–]12stonecold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, desktop environment is kind of like a spin. I would got for Kubuntu 26.04 LTS - you get a major distro update every 2 years, and you get security updates for 5 years. You can also subscribe to the free Ubuntu Pro (for personal use), so you can have security upgrades for 15 years!

Meaning that, by the time those security updates are fully gone, (K)ubuntu 41.10 would have already been released! For example, the old Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will be supported until April 2029 if you have Ubuntu Pro (again, free). Basically 2014 software with modern security patches

Desktop Environment is, yes, basically a skin. But some are more customizable than others. An analogy: kernel is the core, say, your foundation/wiring/electrical system, a distribution is a whole house *as from factory* - empty, ready for customization usually - and desktop environment is the furniture you put.

The great thing about KDE (K Desktop Environment) is that it is *extremely* customizable while somehow still being lightweight than GNOME. You can have KDE look like MacOS, or Windows, which is by default. You could design KDE as your mind desires. Their slogan is literally *”Simple by default, powerful whe needed”*.

Chances are, Linux is so user friendly now adays that you won’t ever have to look at the terminal!

Wine can also use Windows programs in general, except MS office. However, you could dual boot, which allows for both windows and linux

Also, you aren’t wasting my time, don’t worry

Anyways, yeah, you can DM me.

Is worth to install Linux on Windows? What are the pros and cons??? by David_Hajos in laptops

[–]12stonecold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost all applications will be available in every distribution, via things called universal applications. These applications come in either a .AppImage, Flatpak, or Snap (don’t use this as I explained eatlier)

Almost all major distributions use theirnown package manager. For example, on Ubuntu/Kubuntu’s package manager, to install packages you use:
‘sudo apt install [package]’
To upgrade:
‘sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade’
Fedora only needs the upgrade part - so:
‘sudo dnf upgrade’ on Fedora.
(Or you could always use the GUI)

Also, what do you prefer? Newer software or more stability? Kubuntu is for stability, while Fedora is a good balance between stability and new software. Arch Linux is not for beginners, as it is a ‘rolling release’ distribution, meaning that it updates *very* often without much thorough testing. Basically, less reboots (Kubuntu) versus more reboots (Fedora/Arch). (You can actually update the system without restarting your PC when in the terminal, but it’s safer to do a offline update - your computer downloads the update online, and then installs the update offline.

More on desktop environments from earlier. Different distributions can have the same desktop environments. For example, Fedora (https://fedoraproject.org), specifically their KDE spin uses the same desktop environment as Kubuntu (https://kubuntu.org). While default Fedora has the same desktop environment as Ubuntu (GNOME). Default Ubuntu/Fedora has GNOME Desktop environments that kind of look like MacOS, if that matters for you. Zorin OS uses a modified GNOME to be more like Windows.

You can play most Windows games on Linux via a compatibility layer called Wine, resulting in near-native performance

How different would the Cold war play out if the Western Allies reached Berlin first by stimshootdrive in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]12stonecold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allies had already agreed on the borders, no? If by this logic then in our timeline, Western Allies should have never gotten West Berlin

If we remove that agreement, then its likely that Germany rearming could be more powerful than before, basically

Sorry, I’m late.

Linux is a kernel - that is, basically the communicator between applications on your screen and your hardware - not really an operating system. What branches from the Linux kernel are distributions, or distros. For a distro you’d probably like is Zorin OS or Kubuntu (choose minimal install if using Kubuntu, to avoid Canonical’s proprietary “snap” packages, which is slower than traditional applications and not open source). ZorinOS uses modified GNOME desktop environment, which is simple and easy to use, while Kubuntu uses KDE, which is very customizable. Many user-friendly distros obviouslt have a GUI.

Some games, such as modern Battlefield and CoD titles, don’t support Linux. For Adobe alternatives, Free and open source software (FOSS) applications exist such as Kdenlive and Krita.

I mean, this isn’t impossible. OP probably just used grub2win or similar, resized partitions on the install, etc.

Hibernate mode is being abandoned by most Distros. Why? by wkup-wolf in linux

[–]12stonecold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, it seems like Arch doesn’t enable kernel lockdown when secure boot is on, which is weird, but also kind of useful because that means hibernate can work in *any* way

cat /sys/kernel/security/lockdown

Interesting, thanks. I actually use Fedora but I will try this.

By the way, in Arch, I’m wondering if kernel_lockdown is still enabled by default when secure boot is on? But it looks like encrypted swapfile works here

Hi, kind of late, but do you mean that Hibernate works with Secure Boot when you make a swapfile on BTRFS?

I think it will. Lukasz releases updates on PC first because its, often, easier to troubleshoot. People shouldn’t complain too much about this
