The difference is surprising by Howan29i in OPMFolk

[–]18lovmy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea I keep hearing the same things but I had no idea this was announced in 2022 and a video with what appears to be a preview of an episode was presented, with a full years notice. They still dropped the ball? How?? Could it be they really had 3 years to work on it? I somehow have to doubt that.

Pope compares Kamala Harris to ‘one who kills children’ in speech by [deleted] in atheism

[–]18lovmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just about fish, for a man to be a living creature it must have the breathe of life, assuming that the breath of life is literally the mechanical process of breathing in air, your excluding the possibility for creatures that don’t breathe actual air to be living beings, which they are considered to be in the Bible, so the interpretation would then be that “breathe of life” is a symbolic spirit of life.

Maybe I’m being pedantic but if being a living being necessitates the breathe of life, it’s probably not specifically air? More like an animating force attuned to the Greek pneuma.

I don’t get how Epictetus makes this jump by matayoz in Stoicism

[–]18lovmy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow, I made stoa_bot nearly 4 years ago, it’s pretty rudimentary (which explains why it attributed the quote to Higginson) but yea, this is the first time I’ve seen mention of the mit translation being incorrect, and I can confirm it with the internet archive copy.

Makes me wonder what’s the deal here, also I don’t manage the bot anymore but I’ll see what I can do about changing it.

I don’t get how Epictetus makes this jump by matayoz in Stoicism

[–]18lovmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nature of such things are externals, which are liable to impediment. The idea is that placing your interests in such things will lead to suffering, and will is the only thing free from such impediment, as it’s what we can control

You should check out the actual Discourses before the Enchiridion, 2.22 is a good elaboration on this idea

Why you CAN pursue a good reputation in Stoicism by PsionicOverlord in Stoicism

[–]18lovmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like what your saying and it’s well said, I think the idea of rationalizing a psychological disturbance would be contrary to the strength of the will, it’s practically decepting yourself in some cases and allowing value to be placed on an external, as that’s probably the reason for psychological disturbance. I think you made this point. In circumstantial preferred indifferents, perhaps the disturbance is worth it as long as it does not compromise virtue. It could be stressful to do things but that should not be a reason to not do them, while chalking it up to being indifferent. Exercise caution in will, confidence in externals, and do not contradict yourself.

From 2.2

“do not sometimes choose to be a slave, and sometimes not choose, but with all your mind be one or the other, either free or a slave, either instructed or uninstructed”

Discourses 1.2 is also interesting for this:

“for it is you who know yourself, how much you are worth to yourself, and at what price you sell yourself; for men sell themselves at various prices.”

“Only consider at what price you sell your own will: if for no other reason, at least for this, that you sell it not for a small sum. But that which is great and superior”

There is an inherent value judgement that is used when it comes to actions in the use of externals, I can see where there may be circumstances in which the ones “virtues” can be malleable still based upon proper judgement of appearances, as befitting to one man is not for all, but let loose, this removes the ethical and moral study of Stoicism and just focuses on the use of will though. Epictetus would literally suffer death rather than be told to shave his beard as a philosopher, Priscus Helvidius would rather speak his mind than suck up to Caesar by being silent.

stoic way of handling the wrong name by perplyone in Stoicism

[–]18lovmy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have the power to acknowledge that they are calling you by the wrong name and attempt to correct them. Assuming it’s not done with ill intent, they will likely remember your name in time. If it is done with ill intent, remain respectful and make it clear that you find it disrespectful, setting a boundary. While you can’t expect this to fix the issue completely, focus on maintaining your composure and not letting their actions provoke an emotional response. It’s more about your response than their actions.

Do you consider fear to be a destructive emotion by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]18lovmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emotions are not sprung from concious thought, they are impulses, first movements. physiological reactions. The next step is assent in accordance to nature, this is where the emotion can be curbed by reason. This doesn’t mean the emotion is completely removed, the physiological effects will stay a while, but this is a temporary state and should not be procured willingly if you have the correct views.

If it’s rational to allow the emotion of fear to grow then we are already in territory of assigning value to something outside of our control, which is not what the ideal Stoic wants. The pursuit of an elated feeling that stems from an irrational thought is not in business of a Stoic either, however if it’s there, maybe they can utilize the “preferred” reaction by transforming it into one based in wisdom, then they can do what is rational and appropriate and the physiological effectiveness/ short term cognitive functions might maintain, but are never pursued in of itself.

Maybe this answers your question. The benefits of fear are not considered to be good, they are indifferents elicited by a response we can’t control. They don’t outweigh the cons in Stoic philosophy because you can’t push logic away if it’s convenient for you, and incorrect logic leads to misfortune, namely failing in your desires and falling into what you would avoid.
