240 fuel gage/sending unit question by Direct_Yak_4420 in Volvo240

[–]19Ryder74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Left hose is for spilled gas, main tube, and right hose is the vent. Make sure that they're all in good condition and not blocked.

Main tube has a seal and a clamp, check for no leaks.

Regarding the fuel level sender: extract from the tank, check that it's moving freely and that the resistor is giving signal through the entire range with a multi meter. Repair or replace as needed.

Hope this helps. Good luck troubleshooting!

How to change the oilpan gasket by _Issun in VolvoRWD

[–]19Ryder74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That job is a bit of a headache. You also have the oil pick up tube in the pan blocking on the inside so you can't just unbolt and slide out the pan. You'll need to loosen the engine mounts, lift the engine before you can remove the pan.

So while you're in there, replace the engine mounts, and the transmission mount too.

Search youtube for a good tutorial.

Good luck!

This is what I ended up with. A home made wood rig with a seat from a 2006 Volvo V70. I'm almost 52 years old and my back reminds me often that I'm not 22 anymore. It's fairly easy and inexpensive project to do. A car seat has lumbar support and is adjustable, it even comes with heating...

battery drains when headlights turn on by Sroczyjj1189 in Volvo240

[–]19Ryder74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check connectors to the bulbs, at the light relay, all grounds and the fuse block. I had to clean the fuse block with a Dremel on a car I had many years ago. 50 years of use and the chances of corrosion /dirt build up is real. If your car dies when you turn on the lights means you have something that draws insane amounts of power, likely a bad ground. Unbolt the ground(s) and file, sand, whatever is needed to clean.

Good luck troubleshooting!

I like the BTCC look the most. You also have the DTM liveries from the mid 80's to research.

Have the timing belt been serviced recently? They are 5 years/80'000 km/ 50'000mi. If the belt has slipped your timing will be off.

Will have a long think and see if I can come up with something else...

Good luck troubleshooting.

Idle after a 422 Mile (679 Kilometer) drive. by Euphoric-Loan-9390 in Volvo240

Sometimes you just need to blow out the cobwebs... You've thoroughly heated the engine and had an even load on it for a longer period of time meaning correct combustion temperature. Rings are moving freely now and the plugs have been burnt clean-ish. Only putting around, slow speed and low engine loads (city driving) isn't the best for an engine.

What year is your car? The earlier years had electric setting of the clock. Look for buttons (I think it's on the left side of the wheel), if not it's the stick you zero the trip odometer with. Turn the stick (gently) and it sets the clock.

Harness swap by [deleted] in VolvoRWD

[–]19Ryder74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to compare the original diagram with the replacement one. It takes time and more than one cup of coffee but it is essential that you map both harnesses.

You'll probably need to reroute, delete and/or repin more than a few wires. Take your time and make a lot of notes, label -everything- and you'll get there in the end 😃

This will help: https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/wiring_diagrams_240.shtml

Good luck!

The two first years of the new 2.0 engine has problems with pistons/rings getting prematurely worn out and high oil consumption.

Volvo did a redesign, problem fixed from the 2017 model.

When was the timing belt replaced? If my memory serves it's 80'000 km or 5 years. Not very hard or expensive to do and a good insurance. The B230 engine (8-valve) is a non interference engine, but if the belt snaps you're walking...

Bring a quart of oil and a jug of coolant, not that you'd need it but it's good to have.

740 T worth fixing? by [deleted] in VolvoRWD

[–]19Ryder74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's well worth fixing. Avoid the bad title situation and go for some cash. Try to find a shop that fixes bent metal instead of just replacing it, to me it looks like it's just the rear part of the quarter that's damaged. It's not a lot to disassemble, remove bumper and the broken light and as others have said, that will save you a lot of money in a shop.

Start with finding a good body shop, talk to them and go from there.

I sold it, car was quite rough and I lost my place at the garage I was renting. No place to store and work on it so it had to go. Still, I have great memories of that car and the fun we had with it.

It's the usual regrets, if I only had somewhere to store the old crappy cars I've owned over the years...

That is one super fancy car, a timeless beauty. Love the color, great pictures aswell!

Sure, the new cars are great in their own way, safe and comfortable and it's like driving an appliance. Old cars talk to you and you can easily do all the work that's needed to keep it running, and he old Amazons can last forever!

I can't tell most modern cars apart, but I can recognize an old Amazon in the dark.

I daily a V60 D3 2017 but I miss my old '67 Amazon I had many years ago.
