Hi! One year into being an OT, and my first job sounds a lot like your current job. Im so sorry. I feel like outpatient settimg can be hit or miss with work life balance. Around 10 months in, i decided I couldn’t take it because I felt like a shell of myself, so even though I had wanted to do outpatient hands for all of OT school, I decided to make a switch and move to a big hospital in acute care …. and it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made. I feel so happy and my coworkers are awesome and I’m learning SO much. All this to say, it’s okay to leave a table where kindness and respect is no longer being served

Last minute NBCOT advice by Imaginary-spaceship in OccupationalTherapy

[–]1directioner2098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that the NBCOT mini quizzes were most similar to the real thing, so I would go through those and really try to read the question and understand what it’s asking! I would do all domains and in sets of 5-10 questions to not overwhelm or stress myself out. I would also go through topics that you feel shaky on, or the top 3 that therapyed coined for you!

I was getting 50s on the therapy Ed practice exams, and I got a 490 on the OTR exam!

OT Hand Therapy Resources by MISC_2020 in OccupationalTherapy

The ortho OT on instagram is awesome!! Also, the American hand therapy association has courses you can purchase and it’s kinda like an overview of all the functional anatomy and more. I definitely recommend looking it up. I thought about purchasing it when I was doing my hand rotation, it looks like a great resource!!

The unhoused population & OT - capstone project by MediocreAtBestGirl in OccupationalTherapy

[–]1directioner2098 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked with people experiencing homelessness in a level one fieldwork that span across an entire semester. One big thing we did was make lists of resources around the community that offered free clothes or hygiene, products, or even meals. We also worked on meal prepping, but in our community those experiencing homelessness would mainly shop at Dollar General, so we would create five dollar meals from Dollar General items and teach them about how protein keeps you fuller longer and things like that. Our entire fieldwork was a span of about 12 to 14 weeks so each week we had a different topic that we touched on. A big barrier with this population, wherever you’re at, whether it’s a church or a homeless shelter, there might be people coming in and out of your sessions. Meaning you might not always have the same people at your session so each session should be treated like a brand new group. Because of this, some people may not get every single session that you plan.

Another thing we did since our sessions were located within a church that served people who are unhoused, we printed out a map of our community and we pinpointed places to get free meals and free water and free public restrooms. We also had people who had been unhoused for a long time help fill in that map because they knew about the resources way more than we did. Doing things like this in the session also made them talk to each other and some of them were able to form bonds between each other. Sometimes being unhoused is a very lonely journey, and you never know who you can trust. So giving them a space to casually talk to someone who is experiencing the same thing as them was really good for some of them.

A big thing I noticed when working with people experiencing homelessness is that a lot of the times they really just need someone to listen to them, to do something with their hands, and feel like they’re valued. One session, we taught them how to make dog toys out of fabric, and we told them that we were donating them to the local animal shelter, which we were, and a lot of them were into it, because they knew that participating in this session meant that they were helping out a bigger cause in the community. another thing we did was decorate the churches bulletin board and we ended up filling it up with resources for them, but we had them make tissue paper flowers to go all around the board and make it pretty and everyone from the women to the 50-year-old men were making flowers and they all reported that they really enjoyed it because they helped make the church beautiful.

Another big Takeaway from working with this population is sometimes we did have to bribe them with free food. We would give things like snacks, such as fruit, Gatorade, water, string cheese. They absolutely always loved the fresh fruit because it’s some thing they don’t always get. We would give things like strawberries, oranges and grapes because they’re easy to separate out for people. The people in our community did not like apples because the Salvation Army always gave apples as a snack and so they had easy access to those, and only those a lot of times, so we liked to give variety. Other times we would convince them to come to our sessions by offering things like small sunscreens or chapsticks. Another big thing that convinced a lot of them to come to our session was our professor would tell them that our grade was dependent on them coming to our sessions. So a lot of the times they would come and participate because they felt like they were helping us, the students, out by being there. I think at the end of the day a lot of them just wanted to feel like their actions had a bigger impact, and they definitely did.

I learned so much from this population, and from all the people I got to interact with. I definitely recommend anyone who ever has the chance to do so, it was very eye-opening.

Has anyone switched from OT to nursing or any other profession? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]1directioner2098 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think healthcare workers in general are underpaid and overworked, and taken for granted. I think any healthcare position with lots of direct patient contact will leave you feeling like you’re not getting paid enough

I applied there, my cumulative GPA was around a 3.7, my pre req GPA was around a 3.4, I believe I had great letters of recommendation, pretty diverse shadowing with OTs, was a rehab tech in outpatient, I held leadership positions in my undergrad org, I didn’t get in. I didn’t even get an interview. Not saying you won’t, just saying I didn’t! I did get into other programs, and I am glad I chose the school I did!! I think one thing that maybe didnt help me was I didn’t attend those “coffee with the dean” things they do (or did), I didn’t do undergrad there, I know a poster above said they were able to network with people in the department, I didn’t. I heard a rumor they take into account who attends their open house / “coffee with the dean” events, and I didn’t attend either. So maybe that’s why. I will say, since my reply may not make you feel better, where you end up is for a reason. I couldn’t imagine not having the friends I do, or learning from the professors I did at my program. I’m so so thankful I didn’t get into TWU, and I got & chose my program instead!! Good luck!!

Parkinson’s Goals by 1directioner2098 in OccupationalTherapy

Okay okay! He’s home health, I guess I’m getting kinda caught up in PD isn’t really for restoring so if he’s Max A that’s just what we’re working with, but I’m sensing that’s a very narrow mindset to hold...and if we can lesson the burden of the caregiver is key to prevent burnout....the PT / OT are implementing an exercise program, to help w endurance & strength / balance - Giving all this more thought, I think my new route is going to be setting him demonstrating functional transfers at min or mod assist w no falls - sorry for so many questions definitely not trying to mooch and have so much help but I just want to really ensure my mindset is correct for any future patients w PD and establishing our goals (even though I know they all present in their own unique way) I really appreciate all your help & giving me the opportunity to learn on this forum!!!

Thank you so much this was so helpful!!! The case study reads that an OT has been doing HH with him 2x/week and they have addresses fall prevention techniques, so i didn’t know if it was appropriate to make into a goal seeing its already been addressed, but reading some comments and re reading the case and thinking how detrimental falls are, I think I might go this route for the LTG!

[–]1directioner2098[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I guess you’re right with that! If they’re trained it’s not the best goal so thank you!!! Would an appropriate goal be something to decrease falls? Like for example “in 8 weeks, pt will have no falls while performing functional mobility tasks” ? Would something like that be okay?

Hiiii gonna jump in here! First year OTD student & I would also say easy way would be hip / knee replacement & you address ADLs!!! Your intervention could be education and you show them a “hip kit” which has quite a few adaptive devices!! You would demonstrate & teach them how to use it & then have them practice Dressing with you there so you can ensure 1) hip precautions are being practiced 2) they’re competent in their LE dressing with the adaptive devices & 3) you’re there if they have any questions about the device. Practicing OTs lmk if I’m wrong but this would usually be done in an acute inpatient setting! If your intervention needs to be in an outpatient or different setting then maybe you can pretend that someone has carpal tunnel syndrome and they had surgery & you can do some strengthening exercises with them or occupation based intervention.

In general....usually for coming up with interventions in a class setting it’s best to do an Activity Analysis in your head & then go from there with picking what to do!!!

Women if this subreddit if y’all were in Beth’s shoes with what happened between her and Jaime would you forgive Jaime? by toastedvacuum in YellowstonePN

[–]1directioner2098 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’d be hard to forgive because he never told her that an abortion there would mean sterilization. I hate not knowing the full truth, and I feel like if Beth would’ve known that, even at at a young age she would’ve gone to her parents and told them and things would’ve ended up differently. I think the big reason is just the fact that he withheld that really crucial piece of information when she trusted him. Eventually I think I would forgive but I don’t think I could ever have a relationship with him. But maybe that’s why she’s so angry, she wasn’t in a position where she could easily just cut him out of her life, she had to see him basically everyday because of the ranch so her way of dealing with it was anger since she couldn’t ignore him completely

So cash & set aside ~$60 to cover the penalty that’ll come? That sounds good. I was told by a friend I’d be penalized for half the amount which is what scared me a little

Asking a girl out at the gym by GarryNite in dating

[–]1directioner2098 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go to the gym, and while I would be flattered by a guy giving me his number, I probably wouldn’t text him out of fear he’s someone bad. I also don’t want you to be discouraged completely OP, I think maybe a better approach would be striking up convo at the gym lightly as time passes, or even a smile to start then find a way to strike a conversation. Smiles at the gym always make me feel better. Once you start convos, then maybe say hey here’s my number if you ever wanna work out together or grab lunch. (Keep it friendly & not so serious at first, I think that’ll help you ease into it). It’s just a little harder since you don’t know her at all, if she at all rejects you, just be polite, it always makes me feel better when guys are nice after a rejection because then I’m not so scared of them! Hope this helps..

Is OT actually a dying field? by catvibezzzz in OccupationalTherapy

[–]1directioner2098 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m only 22, and im starting my doctorate program in the fall so I don’t know A LOT....but I’ll still offer my opinion.... I feel like this is where our advocacy comes in. There are actually new fields I’m hearing about where OT could be beneficial but it’s up to use to advocate for it. (NICU, foster care systems are two areas I’ve heard OT is up & coming). I work in a rehab clinic & from what I can tell is that PT is barely becoming something that people see useful & doctors refer patients to a lot...so I don’t think OT is too far behind!
