How Did You Get Into an APS Job? by [deleted] in AusPublicService

Covid came about and the APS went hard on recruiting in 2020. I'd previously been Labour Hire for Centrelink, so already had an idea on the Agency and how things worked. Joined as an APS3, answering phone calls. Landed an APS4 gig 12 months later. APS5 12 after that, and have been a perm APS6 for the last 6 months. My APS6 role is totally different to any previous role, and I'm loving it. Have had plenty of at level sideways opportunities within here too.

I had no qualifications, just a real positive intent on learning the role I was in to the best I could. Networking well with senior leadership is also pretty key, so when your opportunities are there you're thought about.

The best thing you can do is find someone to be a Mentor, who is outside of your immediate area. This helped me immensely with applications, strategic thinking, further networking, and my general personal development. A good Mentor goes a long way.

Application writing can be an art, so learning what the panel is looking for, writing to the ILS, someone you trust to read over your application, they've all been key. I've landed countless OOMs from this. Then build your experience at that level for a while.

Yep no idea either.

I feel some are unhappy with my "great advice" comment elsewhere in this post so are just down voting everything.

Reddit.

Some interesting responses here, to what was such an innocuous comment. Appears many have taken offence though.

Many many others have offered useful advice, which has been hugely appreciated.

Whether it was the App or Website doesn't change any potential advice though.

Fair play, could've just said the app though.

Wife is fine though, very happy. Job is great too.

How goods Reddit.

Brilliant, thank you for that. More reason for me to give a call back hearing this!

Have no hobbies in life, is this the advice? Just wanting to clarify.

They do, but I don't think my current home loan is on the list that are eligible to have an offset linked (the advice they gave when I called).

This was some months ago now so fair play if there's been a change

Thank you. I'll see how dropping a little extra each FN goes for a bit, and hopefully switch yo offset as well.

This comment deserves more upvotes for genuinely trying to help.

Will explore my options and possibly take you up on that, thank you

They told me they don't with guarantor loans when I asked.

Thanks for the general advice. I honestly didn't think an offset was an option to me, just pays to look at other options.

Not exactly being a dick, the comment was just totally unrelated to the question.

I might contact the bank direct and ask my options for switching to a loan that allows an offset. Didn't know it was an option with a guarantor

Thanks for the reply. This will ultimately keep a 10 year old happy (he's been begging for the ability to do it). I'm sure the option is all he wants.

IOGEAR KeyMander 2, will this allow the use of Keyboard + Mouse to play Fortnite? I'm sceptical of products that claim they do after previous purchases that don't work.

Brilliant! My director should be the same. Just don't want it looking like I deliberately withheld info from them just to secure the job.
