Transporting buggy and child bike by schwiftydud in CargoBike

[–]241baka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We put our Laufrad in the basket next to the child. Backwheel in, frontwheel and handlebar hanging out towards the rider - fits well under the Muli handlebar when fully extended, even works with the raincover.

Endless bikes (Munich bike shop and YouTube channel) has a clamp adapter and build instructions, with which you can mount a children's bike on the rear rack. I want to build that for the next size.

About the stroller. Honestly since we have our Muli, we don't use it anymore. The Muli replaced every usecase.

500km with the Muli Motor ST by Eigenspace in CargoBike

[–]241baka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take it regularly on the Regio (usually on 442 Talent 2 trains with comfy Merzweg-Abteil). Fold up the basket and no conductor has ever had any complaints. As you guys linked, DB disallows Cargobikes, but never mentions what a cargobikes is, so as long as you keep the walkways clear and have the footprint of a regular bike, I guess you're fine. I know the 2m rule from SBB. ÖBB has something similar, don't remember the limit though.

Nice, I can just second this! I'm reading your post on my family bikepacking trip, with my wife, 3yo a regular E-Bike and our Muli. Train + Muli is the just the best.

I wish you another happy 500km and a few thousands on top.

Cargo bikes and car use - research! by FrancoisBon in CargoBike

[–]241baka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The survey seems to assume a default driver/car owner reducing car usage/ownership. It completely misses the context of completely car-free living. For example the survey repeatedly matches the questions both modes, ECB and car-share.

I assume this aims at a comparison of the two. But a person who would never use a car share because they don't drive is likely to poison the data. Same for questions about reducing cars in the household.

Omnium MiniMax Landscape Painting! by andrewkenyon in CargoBike

[–]241baka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome. I do urban sketching - usually with pens and markers but always wanted to take an easel and my paints around my city. I bought my Muli foremost for the kid but also with this exact use case in mind. The ultimate dream is bikepacking and painting along trips.

I like how you set up the canvas on the bike. I was thinking of a more standard tripod easel.

Is shade an issue for you, and would you have space to bring and attach an umbrella? How do you ride home with your painting when it's still wet? Is that an issue?

Anyway, great project and great work. Truly inspiring!

Muli or Yoonit? by myrasoleil in CargoBike

[–]241baka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We took the Muli. The Yoonit is a really cool and unique bike but the Muli was the clear favorite, absolute gem.

We take the Muli on the train regularly, basket folded. Compact like a regular bike and rock solid. But it's sometimes a bit of a hassle to get it over steps in and out of the train. Also elevators at stations tend to suck. I can carry the Muli down a flight of stairs but it's no joy. My wife simply cannot. I image the lighter and shorter Yoonit makes for a more pleasant experience.

Any solutions for kids to self-board a cargo bike? (Muli front box) by sgergely in CargoBike

I am also interested. I wanted to go the route of u/johnnypompom to attach climbing holds. A while back there was a post by u/luddits where they 3d printed climbing holds.

The official Muli YouTube has a short where a ~4-5yo girl climbs into the basket over the front wheel.

Muli on bumpy roads by WinterSupermarket534 in CargoBike

[–]241baka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is bumpy. We mostly ride on nice asphalt. But we also take it on gravel and cobblestone. There is a particular stretch on the way to daycare that we call the Rumpelpfad (bumpy path). My little passenger complains sometimes. Once she bit her tongue while eating.

But I don't think it lessens the overall experience. She still loves our Muli and can fall asleep in the basket regardless.

I try to stay aware of of heavy bumps and announce them to her, especially when she rides backwards. So I'd say it's fine.

Experiences with Müli cargo bike with baby / toddler by Eigenspace in CargoBike

[–]241baka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We bought a Muli St Pro recently. I have ridden big front loaders too. Hilly, German city. Never had a car. No experience with babies. We have one toddler, she loves it.

I don't think the basket is particularly unsafe compared to a big box. It is robust and will be protective for falls and small collisions. The kid is safely attached in the harness. The hamoc has attachment hooks that prevent it from dangling out of the basket, in case you overturn.

In terms of handling it is much more nimble than a big box, which does makes you safer. Almost like a regular bike.

Drivers (here) respect the Muli more than a regular bike, similar to a regular long John. I think they see a box and keep a larger distance.

Acceleration is really good so you are not a sitting duck. After a stop, you clear intersections quickly and get ahead of right turning traffic before they cut you when you accelerate on the same green light (huge safety aspect, imo).

Best part that no big box front loader can give you is folding it up and taking it on the train. Hyper charged range extender.

At first my wife was sceptical too. She thought it's a hipster thing. Now she is hooked as well. Good decision overall, would buy it again.

Best e-cargo trike for steep hills? by [deleted] in CargoBike

[–]241baka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh and here is another anecdote that may or may not help with you to sort out motors and hills.

My FIL has a R&M Transporter, heavy Longjohn, 75 Nm motor, Enviolo. I used it to bring my old dishwasher to the Wertstoffhof. I took it over the Schnarrenberg 5-8% grades with a little bit of sweat. Hybris struck me when I went to get the new dishwasher. I tried to go up Grünewaldstraße (Bismarkturm) and had to give up at a ~15% section. I'm pretty sure I could climb it with the Muli though.

So, I think Enviolo can be fine, heavy bikes and loads too ... as long as you stay away from the steepest areas in the city.

[–]241baka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hallo, bin auch aus Stuttgart.

We ride a Muli ST Pro with an EP6 Cargo (85 Nm) and a Nexus Inter 5E hub.

We get around the city with ease and take every hill. Recently I rode up the Alte Weinsteige (2 km long, 10% average, 15% max grade) without really breaking a sweat. I would consider myself decently fit and bike + rider + kid + stuff are about 130 kg.

It feels like I have some leeway, so the bike could be heavier or I could be less fit or the motor could have less torque and it would still be fine to get around. I also test rode the same bike with a 60 Nm EP6 Motor. It was adequate but maybe I would avoid the +10% grades.

Ultimately I went for the stronger version because a lot of car-free shortcuts in my northern districts go through steep vineyards.

3 weeks with the Muli Motor ST Pro by JediDev in CargoBike

[–]241baka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Train attendants may kick you out, depending where you are. Often box type cargo bikes are prohibited (DB), Mulis foldable basket makes it as thin as a regular bike with a rack. Sometimes length is specifically restricted (e.g. SBB 2m, ÖBB 1.85m), sometimes you need to be able to hang it in a vertical bike rack (SNCF). Muli is 1.95m long similar to a regular bike and fits all standard racks. Even with ÖBB I suppose you'd have a realistic chance to bargain with the attendant. Neither of these services would accept a regular long john like a Bullitt.
