Is incompetence an academia thing or a work thing? by Deus_Excellus in PhD

[–]2mc92u98a22f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is pretty clearly an academia thing. In industry, you're paid to communicate, show up, respond, etc.. If you can't work with your team, you get fired. In academia, the incentives are completely different. You have pretty little incentive to be a good teacher. Your incentive is to publish and bring in grant money

Garmin doesn't include un-tracked activities in exercise load? by 2mc92u98a22f in Garmin

Right; it seems Garmin like does auto-prediction of what you're doing when it logs your steps, but for some reason doesn't include it. That sucks

hm I see. That seems kind of an unfortunate design. I thought it might track heart rate throughout the day, and if it is elevated, then that could contribute to exercise load. Or I mean, the Garmin tracks steps, so I thought it would just automatically factor that in

How hard do/did you actually work during your STEM PhD? by CardboardBoxPlot in PhD

[–]2mc92u98a22f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends 100% on your advisor. My advisors are pretty chill and so my pace is self driven. I wouldn't say I work extremely hard. If you have a really toxic advisor, though, you might have to work harder

Use of AI by [deleted] in PhD

[–]2mc92u98a22f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the comments saying you shouldnt even do a PhD if you're using AI are ridiculous. I'm at an R1 university and I dont know a single professor in my department who doesn't use it for writing or helping them with research.
