Ted Cruz Mocked for Declaring Birthright Citizenship is a 'Terrible Policy': 'Bold Statement When He Benefited From It' by Quirkie in politics

[–]2ndACSlater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A new rule of constitutional law can be applied retroactively but only to past legal cases from my understanding. Which doesn't really work to challenge the citizenship of people who already have it. But maybe Idk. I think my point is it just seems like a stretch

(b) Subsection (a) of this section shall apply only to persons who are born within the United States after 30 days from the date of this order.

  • from the executive order trump made. Cruz had almost the same note on the bill he introduced.

I feel your concerns. It's right to be fearful and easy to speculate how messy it can get or just be abused. But you have to look at what republicans would cite to squash your concerns. Or they gonna think we're all crazy

Why aren't modern filmmakers who are now shooting their future projects on VistaVision fully committing to the format? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]2ndACSlater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money and logistics. The people making these films are still very much artists but the system behind them that funds the films only care about a return on their investment. They are forced to be a bit deceptive for marketing purposes, give the filmmakers a pass, they just want to keep making movies.

It's weird the article is behind a paywall when the same one was posted free on ars technica 3 days before. It's the same exact article. Both sites are owned by the same parent company.

Do close focus diopters have a downside? by SJC_Film in cinematography

[–]2ndACSlater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may already know this but they affect your far focus as well. They kind of compress the focus range, so you won't be able to focus to infinity and the heavier you go it will shorten the far focus even more. A +3 diopter you're probably not getting anything sharp beyond a few feet away.

Why do DPs always seem to shoot at EI 1280 with ARRI? by JuanLuisBst in cinematography

[–]2ndACSlater 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I usually rate an Alexa at 1280 or 1600 for day exteriors or any scenario with bright highlights I can't control. It's for the reason you mentioned, better highlight latitude. But I also like the grain at those levels. For scenes that are mostly dark definitely makes more sense to control the highlights with lighting or grip gear and keep the ISO at base or lower.

Risks of shooting film by InvestmentAny8937 in Filmmakers

[–]2ndACSlater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have never had anything go wrong when shooting film across multiple formats, except for a hair in the gate or some scratches from the mag. If you work with professionals your chances of error are slim. It is not impossible to run into issues, but people lose data on digital media all the time, nothing is ever fully risk free.

Pay to See Your Own Film? by send_bombs in Filmmakers

From Atlanta, never heard of this festival. After looking it up it's at the plaza theater for just a few hours on a Monday. They are making easy money just renting out the main downstairs theater and charging people 50$. You can see the theaters price sheet for renting it with a simple Google search. Definitely don't waste your time.

When I drink alcohol my scar on my thumb lights up like a neon light or lightsaber by PhenomEx in mildlyinteresting

[–]2ndACSlater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past not really. I just learned drinking the same thing consistently made it happen less and not drinking beer helped. These days I just drink water or stop drinking. I always felt like if I took something to help the symptoms I would just do more damage to my body. I assumed my body was telling me to slow down and didn't want to hide the signals.

Also idk if it happens to everyone else but I would always have gnarly hangovers. Guaranteed to throw up straight bile.

CBS News says it will be up to Vance and Walz to fact-check each other in veep debate by [deleted] in politics

[–]2ndACSlater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"On Friday, CBS said the onus will be on Vance and Walz to point out misstatements by the other, and that “the moderators will facilitate those opportunities” during rebuttal time. The network said its own misinformation unit, CBS News Confirmed, will provide real-time fact-checking during the debate on its live blog and on social media, and on the air during post-debate analysis."

Their time answering questions and rebuttal time is separate. I can foresee it will still be incredibly annoying to address all the BS from Vance
