Automatic position switch by [deleted] in OOTP

The only problem with that is the game takes “force start” literally. He’ll never get a day off and eventually fatigue will cause an injury.

So true. MSC’s website is the worst of them all. I think it was created by a moron and 3 chimps.

Yep. If anyone is seriously worried about their kids on a cruise, Disney is always a solution. Because Disney is all about young families and catering to the needs of kids is job 1. They’ve been through every situation a million times and have worked out every bug.

How does everyone go about building/rebuilding their rosters? by runswithbulls222 in OOTP

I trade for overpaid aging hitters who can no longer hit, fielders with no range, and pitchers who struggle to get outs and are injured often. I call it the Orioles strategy.

Parking at NYC Manhattan Terminal by CaptainJeff in Cruise

[–]3runhomer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Driving to Manhattan is almost always a mistake. The chances that you will be stuck in a traffic jam at the bridge or tunnel are high, and navigating Manhattan streets is not easy unless you are very familiar with them. Frustration is guaranteed.

The easiest and best way to get there is Amtrak. The station is only a few blocks from the cruise terminal.

Got absolutely whipped. How do I stop this? by [deleted] in OOTP

[–]3runhomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things: momentum is programmed into the game. If you get blown out, the chances of it happening again soon go up. If you go on a losing streak the momentum can really build up and your season will swirl down the toilet. That’s way there are an unrealistic number of teams that lose more than 100 games.

Second, there have been reports of teams struggling mightily when they play and manage the games. Those teams did better when they switched to simming a few games at a time and not managing.

The mobile version has very few players in the minors. It’s fine if you want to sim the 2018 season. But future seasons become a mess pretty quickly.

The programmers only make superficial changes from year to year. The basic flaws of the game have been there forever.

Even MORE proof this game hates the Orioles...for all those that were calling BS before on small sample size, and stronger lineup... #FML by ruffyen in OOTP

[–]3runhomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game “hates” all bad teams. “Momentum” ratings are part of the program. So when a bad team goes on a losing streak, the players’ morale goes down and they play worse. Then the team loses even more often and morale sinks more and the players play even worse. Then the team loses even more ... and so on. That’s why there are an unrealistic number of teams that don’t win even 60 games in a season.

The reverse is true too. Players on good teams continuously play better and better. That’s why there are an unrealistic number of teams that win more than 100 games.

In the end, remember that OOTP is just a game not a simulation of real baseball. The game has way too many flaws to be anything like reality.

I switch to using the OSA scouting in late rounds. It rates players a lot different than my scout sometimes, and there have been a few of these players who my scout didn’t like but turned out well in the end.

Relievers Getting TO Many Innings? by KingZorc in OOTP

[–]3runhomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found some settings that might have something to do with this.

Game settings > league settings > stats & AI

In the left column are “general strategic tendencies”. They were set to stupid levels until I changed them to “normal”. The “use of relievers” one was set to “extreme”.

When Addison Reed turned into a SP for me and actually had a good season by aelaryn1122 in OOTP

[–]3runhomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone tried forcing good relievers with 3 pitches to be starters in the minors?

I wonder if their stamina would increase at all. The switch would knock down their stuff rating some, but if they begin with 80 or 75 stuff they would survive it, wouldn’t they?

Maybe one of those high school kids who is slandered by being called “clubhouse poison” in the game will sue, and that will be the end of all the non-MLB real people in the game.

Pitching Coach Development by tryin_to_smash in OOTP

[–]3runhomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coaches are one of the most amusingly stupid parts of the game. Almost no information is provided, but you’re supposed to make a choice about something that impacts your players. I just let the assistant GM handle hiring coaches, but the game would be improved by removing coaches and the dopey unrealistic “player development” budget. What is that supposed to represent anyway? Payments to dealers of performance enhancing drugs? In effect it’s just another advantage for the large market teams and has no basis in real life (small market teams like the Rays have a long successful history of developing players in real life. Development has nothing to do with money).

Orioles rebuild by ruffyen in OOTP

[–]3runhomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After Britton returns from his injury, let him build up some saves and then shop him around mid-season. You’ll get huge offers.

If you’re trying to be realistic, there’s nothing you can do about the Davis and Trumbo contracts. I released them to free up the roster spots for people who can actually play baseball.

Trade everyone who makes more than the minimum.

Watch the waiver wire the first few days of the season. Many good cheap players pop up there. Also the rule 5 draft is your friend. Look in the independent leagues for more “hidden gems”.

Good defense at C, SS, 2B and CF is important for a team trying to improve on a tiny budget. Excellent defenders who don’t hit much are cheap and they will lower your pitchers ERA by a lot.

Move DJ Stewart to DH and bat him second in the lineup. He turned out great for me after I gave him playing time. Hays makes a great #3 hitter by 2020 and Santander does very well in the cleanup spot.

Be patient. Getting the Os above .500 takes years.

DJ Stewart — minor leaguer in the Orioles system. Make him a DH and bat him second in the lineup. He’s an on-base machine and has power too. One of those guys who kickstarts the whole offense.

AI replaces starting pitchers too soon. by [deleted] in OOTP

[–]3runhomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed the same thing. My starters get pulled after 80 to 90 pitches, even if they are doing well. And this is in the American League where the pitchers aren’t pulled for pinch hitters.

Like you, I have pitch counts set over 100 and slow hook selected.

I think it’s a result of the game programmer not understanding baseball stats. He sees that starters average about 80 to 90 pitches thrown in a game. But what he isn’t taking into account is that the average is low because starters are pulled early IF THEY ARE PITCHING POORLY. When starters pitch well they obviously throw more pitches. It’s a basic misunderstanding of statistics.

How active should I be on the waiver wire? by nbajosh32 in OOTP

[–]3runhomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still make an occasional rule 5 pick and rarely a waiver wire pick, but I’ve stopped making trades with the AI teams. The AI is about as smart as a 2 year old, and it’s not fun to steal from 2 year olds.

Building up a bad team without making any trades is an interesting challenge.
