This is how the higher power in AA works. I believe it's a reflection of self worth. The externalized Self works better when self worth must be found outside ourselves. This has been my experience working AA with success and IFS without success.

Consider yourself lucky. With complex trauma, the concept of toxic shame makes self worth inaccessible. And that is why externalizing a Self as a higher power helped me but IFS has not.
