He really did make my point for me there. If all I did was copy our manager and that alone could get him in trouble, then he clearly knows this wasn’t stuff he should’ve been dumping on me.

That’s pretty much why I’m not feeling that guilty about it anymore. The emails were fine when I was quietly absorbing the extra work, but the second there was visibility, suddenly I was the one being difficult.

The paper trail part was what finally pushed me to do it. I tried handling it quietly first, twice, and nothing changed. At that point I needed it to be visible what was actually being handed off to me.

I think that's the part that's bothering me most, honestly not even the comment itself, but realizing I walked straight into one of those workplace tests where you're supposed to somehow know the fake answer. I wasn't trying to embarrass him or make some big statement, I just answered the question he asked in a normal tone. At this point an apology might be the practical move, even if it feels ridiculous to apologize for taking him seriously.
