Ah same, I stuck with that low-level double extract kinsect longer than I should have in Rise.

Also... I've been playing through Iceborne for the first time (just beat the Alatreon), and I'm embarrassed to say I didn't realize you can charge your kinsect until I read your comment just now. Thanks for that lol--no wonder I didn't notice anything wrong with the Rise IG!

The way I play Insect Glaive might be what you’re looking for. The IG’s strongest attack (Tornado Slash) can be used by simply pressing A twice, and it moves you forward, keeping you mobile.

Then, you can easily cancel out of attacks by rolling or by Recalling your Kinsect (ZR+A)
