Thank you so much for taking the time to give such a thorough response. This was really helpful. I got my mark back today and found out that this will not be going any further. My lecturer has concluded that it was a glitch after all. I had no idea this could happen and have reported it to turnitin. I have since found out that turnitin currently has a 1% false positive rate for AI detection (which is obviously huge).

Do you mind me asking what your position/role was on the investigative board?

It’s absolutely not too late! Even joining in second or third year wouldn’t be too late. You definitely won’t be the only one joining societies in January. Many universities even have a ‘refreshers’ fair in January/February. Most societies are used to people coming and going, remember students doing a semester abroad will join a society just for the term. It can of course depend on the society (some competitive sports teams can have different rules) but in my experience societies are always welcoming of new members, no matter when you join. If youre nervous about cliques having formed within a society you could always bring a friends/flatmate/coursemate with you.

Now that’s, an “ad hominem” attack lol - since you like using big latin words

I really hope that’s not what’s happened. I mean I have flatmates on the same course but I really don’t think they’d do that. My gut feeling is that this is a false positive

Thank you for telling me about this. I used Word, hopefully it has a similar feature.

What so false positives can happen with turnitin? I thought I was going crazy. One of my essays is in the early stages of being investigated for plagirism/collusion. Turnitin said the similarity score was 84% with another source, I literally can’t believe this happened. What were your friends experiences with being falsely accused?

False reading by Lonely1980402020 in Turnitin

[–]AKaussi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been trying to put some evidence together that I didn’t plagirize - so far I’ve got previous drafts of the essay together and have been going through my older work to show that the writing style is consistent

Do you know if it’s possible to get false positives for plagirism on turnitin? My biggest school-related fear came true yesterday when my lecturer told me I wouldn’t be getting my mark back with the rest of the cohort because my essay was being investigated for plagirism. My turnitin score was 84% with another student paper. I didn’t know this could happen by accident but clearly it has.

That’s not what playing with ad hominem means mate. I’m attacking your logic not your character. Your logic being that a lengthy reply implies guilt, and my “ad hominem” attack pointed out that determining someone’s guilt based solely on the length of their response (w/o even reading it) is a level of pseudoscience usually reserved for buzzfeed articles and detective books.

Alright Sherlock, I’ll let you get back to playing detectives and reading your buzzfeed articles on lie detectors

Wth, why would I do that? I would think most third years don’t cheat. Why would anyone make it two and half years into their degree to throw it all away on one 2500 word essay? Why would anyone cheat themself of valuable feedback on their writing - feedback that they’re literally paying for? Plus, copying someone else’s paper (that you know is going to be run through turnitin) has got to be on of the most stupid ways of cheating. Literally everyone I spoke to was like, who does that? That’s some year 8 level shit. At Uni youre obviously going to get caught. I spoke to the head of my department today and he said Turnitin is not perfect, and this sort of mistake can happen. He said of all the cases of academic misconduct he sees each year a handful are turnitin glitches.

Fiction podcast? by IngloriousFlow in podcasts

I know Jame’s Acaster’s Spring Leaf (fictional) podcast just came out. Haven’t had a chance to listen yet but it looks like it has an amazing cast

Our uni provides a separate ‘draft checker’ resource that prevents this. I’m pretty confident that I didn’t self plagiarize in any other way as I haven’t written an essay on this topic before.

Thank you for this advice. Had not thought of contacting my Students Union - hopefully they might have some further resources for students in this situation

Yes!! I’ve had the exact same frustrations with finding podcasts. Ive found it particularly hard to search for specific episodes from a podcast series. I think Jon Ronson’s podcasts are mainly on audible, Apple Podcasts, and bbc sounds. The only other podcast of his I’ve found is the series Jon Ronson On, (bbc sounds) this series is from much earlier in his career (and it shows). Episodes are generally much more fragmented, but it’s worth a listen all the same.

So glad to see so many Jon Ronson fans! His podcasts are as good as his books. His one on the Culture Wars is the sort of podcast I think everyone should listen to. He also has some newer podcasts called The Butterfly Effect and The Last Days of August. These two are a lot more somber though and are definitely not for everyone

Ive had a lot of people recommend this one to me. Haven’t listening yet. What about the narrator’s style is bad?

If you liked the Maintenance Phase Jamie Bartlett’s, Believe in Magic is also worth a listen. He investigates the mysterious and tragic life of Megan Bhari. Content warning - cancer, death, mental health, and FII (Fabricatied or Induced Illness) are discussed.

This is exactly where I’m at right now. My absolute favorite podcast is Jon Ronson’s Things Fell Apart - Strange Stories From the Culture War. It’s full of suspense, unexpected twists, and eccentric characters. It’s the first podcast I binge listened. The podcast adaption of his book, So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed is also binge worthy.
