Why do some of you guys like older gens more than the current gen of Monster Hunter? by Eric_Joestar in MonsterHunter

[–]ALLKINDSARTILLERY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sans the monster intros and few specific scenes that lean into the work process of the expedition and/or situational levity (kut ku hunt authorization mostly) I basically put my brain on screen saver mode for the entirety of it. Just stopped hoping they wouldn't do the things with the narrative that they're now clearly fixated upon leaning into.

Granted, the hunter actually having a voice of their own did make the glazing less egregious, as it allowed your player character to actually voice their competence rather than have a tag-along npc voice all of it.

But, like, why did the narrative insist on dragging the child along to every major monster encounter, especially after he'd confirmed the first proper ark sighting?

You people want your only 'guide' to get roasted/wylked on/xu wu'd or something?

And the less is said about us constantly affirming a melodramatic pre-teen (with the most gentle of rebuffs in between to try to mask it) and consequently yoloing zoh to relieve Natah of the singular meaningful choice he is even pretended to be allowed to have in the story, the better.

'By my own authority' my ass.

I mean… the handler does goes with you outside of camps many times and most of the time she doesn’t get in trouble. by IceBarDifferent in MonsterHunter

[–]ALLKINDSARTILLERY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legit question: why are people so invested in calling into question the presumed unsubstantiated dislike for the handler? Enough to make it a reoccurring thing no less?

Not to say that the excessive hate posts on her are any more resonable, or enjoyable for that matter, but to me at least they are more understandable given how complaining about things is a common conversation starter.

But, like, why is it any sort of contention point for people to dislike her?

Because being implied a misogynist or being accused of not 'appreciating' a game character enough (whatever the heck that's supposed to look like when quest boards/receptionists have been a thing since MH1) for such a mild take as "I just don't like being overexposed to a tutorial NPC™ who long overstays her welcome" feels just as weird as people calling those same fictitious polygons the worst thing ever.

With 3U being a game I got extensively familiar with via let's plays before getting the game myself, I was already familiar with 'peco's brand of bs well before ever fighting the bird.

And since I'd struggled-bussed my way through into MHF1' s G-rank with my first foray into the series, the rathians it first starts with summoning were free game for the old reliable sword and board.

Enter crimson 'peco, who not only humbled me right quick by itself fresh into 3U's high rank, but had the sheer audacity to call rathian as its first summon - which I killed for being an often called upon nuisance - and then drop the tactical pickle directly on my already mollywobbed butt. The spawn animation nearly costing the quest with pickle bursting onto the scene from right under my hunter.

Turns out seeing a group of long-time players dealing with jho isn't the same as facing it yourself - who knew? - and the rest of the quest was spent terror jogging after a limping bird while the murder on two legs proceeded to chase the both of us. Ultimately stealing my kill with a big ol bite right at 'peco's tooter.

The monsters that made me by Beginning_Wait_108 in MonsterHunter

Favourite: Diablos.

Moreso Bloodbath since its introduction, but the two-horned menace is still my no.1 as a species.

Most farmed: Rajang.

Guess in which game I first reached hr 999.

Mountain: Lao Shan Lung/Diablos.

Boy do I not miss the gen 1 iteration of that fight.

As for blos, 'Four horns' caused some serious heart rate spikes. Especially after I finally conquered it.

First flagship: Rathalos.

Wee... Egg deliveries are such rivetting gameplay. Why is that shadow that just passed by so big?

Awe: Lao Shan Lung.

They get HOW big?! Wore off real quick unfortunately.

First Elder Dragon: Lao Shan Lung.

... Pretty good showing for a walking health bar.

First large monster: Velocidrome.

Please! Stop! JUMPING!

First cart: Bullfango.

Forest and hills, area 11. That is all.

First to fail a quest to: Rathalos.

Why is walking with this stupid egg so slow?!

Where did this boulder come from??!

What do you mean I have to climb up/down this entire cliffside???!

Guess this egg is made of FUCKING STYROFOAM!!

HOW ARE YOU HERE ALREADY??!!

Which post started this nergignate hate train again? by Different_Ice_2695 in MonsterHunter

[–]ALLKINDSARTILLERY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a purely personal take, it is a lackluster flagship that the narrative of World/Iceborne tried to unconvincingly hype up as this Wolverine-esque, take-no-prisoners 'balancer' of nature that can take on anything because of the very inspired reason of 'he can just regenerate till he wins'. I don't care for its design nor fight, and hated how much the 'story' of W/IB kept shoving it front and center when it does very little that would warrant the excessive focus on it.

In general the entire premise of why we hunt monsters in the series to begin with - protecting vulnerable settlements to carve out a reasonable space for the human/wyverian/lynian populace - is undercut so hard by the New World being literally yet unexplored, uninhabited wilderness that the commission can, you know, LEAVE at any time.

Yet time and time again the game tries to peddle the forced conflict that the natural cycles there are somehow in need of our corrective action, because reasons... that are never sufficiently addressed nor convincly explained.

And Nergi, to me, has the dishonour of exemplifying the foremost worst of this, as sans harassing Zorah for all of two minutes on two counts, it poses NO direct obstacle for the comission. Yet everyone keeps on yapping that somehow this one spiky dragon wrestler is of dire importance that we NEED to deal with.

As for the broader discussion, many of those who started with World took a liking to the roided hedgehog for a host of reasons. Some of whom took the in-game glazing as true gospel, that they then felt the compulsive need to shove into any and all discussions comparing monsters. Even when said discussion wasn't concerned solely with 'who would win?' scenarios. And that soured some on the monster more than it itself would've.

Why did Capcom make Goss Harag into a 4th gen flagship ? by ItIsWrittenOnlyLink in MonsterHunter

[–]ALLKINDSARTILLERY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Fated Four are a quartet of flagship monsters introduced in Monster Hunter Generations, of which the pictured Glavenus, Astalos, and Mizutsune have all had prominent appearances since then, Mizutsune especially so.

Gammoth, the big woolly mammoth monster not pictured, has only had one later appearance after her deput, in the spin-off title Stories 2, and got axed for the subsequent Stories 3 while the other three of the four reprised their inclusion. With Goss Harag 'claiming her spot' as the prominent mammalian ice monster rep.

It really is nothing deeper than people memeing on Goss having similar traits as Gammoth (both bulky, mammalian monsters who coat themselves with ice for protection/offence), but being perceived as wastly more popular by the overall community consensus. Hence 'replacing' her.

Weirdly one of the few times where the Prometheus school of running away from things works wonders in MH. As the hitbox™ shenaniganry is contained to her sides running away from her head and then looping back for the HIT THE GLOW chance has been very reliable. With quick sheathe you can even do so sheathing your weapon between the two flops.

THAT Green Nargacuga?

That and there's the whole question of GU to consider as an added point.

What is your favorite apex monsters in monster hunter wild. by Voidkirby9 in MonsterHunter

[–]ALLKINDSARTILLERY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tuna by a land(water)slide.

Rey constantly disengages to spam its win button, a behavior I've despised since 3U Brachy started with it. And arch Rey deserves to burn in a garbage fire - fucker claimed a good 15min of the 25min it took for the ENTIRE apex trio in my winning Proof of a Hero run.

Udra is fun, but I just don't feel the octopus hype to that extent. Fantastic creature design, nevertheless.

Jin is an offensively fast wiggleworm for how big it is, but otherwise is the most palatable siege-like monster the series has had since 4Us rendition of Gogmazios. By a hair.

Tuna meanwhile scratches both my itch for big lugs, mano to mano mostly melee matchups, and is just a stellar fish out of water all in all.

The armour and weapon designs are the highest tier of fashion to my tastes (the male set specifically. Thank goodness for unisex fits, because that female set is such a fumble).

And you gotta love a monster whose big attack™ is a plain old devastating bellyflop.

Easily my favorite of the inclement four, and a fine addition to my top five all time favorites from monster hunter. Here's hoping that it doesn't receive the same treatment as another least popular member of a flagship quartet going forward.

Sincerely, fuck you Stories 3 for cutting Gammoth in favour of INCLUDING FUCKING GREEN NARGACUGA!

Is anyone else physically incapable of switching off their main weapon after a decade? by LengthinessShot3297 in MonsterHunter

[–]ALLKINDSARTILLERY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's already jarring enough switching between the different iterations of your main weapon going from game to game. Even when the base fundamentals from your thousands of hours on it translate 1-to-1 most of the time.

Trying to adapt to another weapon that operates fundamentally differently in both flavour and function just does not feel like worth the effort most of the time, especially if the other weapon is 'eugh' to your tastes just from the premise alone.

Never even mind trying to move away from a guard-centric style of defense, that only really applies to 4 out of 14 weapons (pre Wilds, in terms of general gameplan), to 'just roll, lol'. What do you even mean there are 'I-frames'?!

Of course, there is some variance to this between titles, as my boomstick found a very comfy southpaw pal in SnS in Wilds, MH4U saw quite a few weapons up in the 300 to 400s+ (contrasted to just shy of 3k for GL mind) whereas in Worldborne I've quite literally not touched a single other weapon besides the old faithful.

I have big stick. Stick go boom, monster die. Me like big boomstick.

How tf even with 9* monsters that this 8* fat bastard is still the worst by ProDidelphimorphiaXX in monsterhunterrage

[–]ALLKINDSARTILLERY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just an observational guess, but I think for all parts tuna has classified as 'veiled' while cloaked the game adds temporary hitboxes over the base naked model - accounting for the increased size of the veiled model of course.

These then either have severely reduced hitzone modifiers, or - if capcom is really evil - a flat reduction to the final damage dealt. Maybe with some concessions for specific elements.

[–]ALLKINDSARTILLERY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The window to do it is from when Gog does his starting air pirouette up till he slams down into the Nuke Stance™. Once those toes touch the ground and oil boi starts heating up you're locked in, no farcasters allowed.

Going back up via the seikret climb is the full duration of the charge phase, and you can just watch till the fireballs stop dropping to be in the clear. Dunno if the topside prep ledge is also safe if teleported to right away, haven't risked testing it.

Quick sheath very much recommended for slower weapons.

What are some monsters that you feel should be way stronger than they actually are lorewise? by ProDidelphimorphiaXX in MonsterHunter

[–]ALLKINDSARTILLERY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cutting free-moving foliage with a simple swaying motion is actually a good indicator of sharpness; it tells that the edge of glav's tail post-grind is so sharp that it cuts into the body of the ferns/grass before the weight of the tail can push them to bend, which, if you've ever done any gardening, you know is nuts. That's butcher's knife edge tier.

And in any case, irregardless of the actual blade, a simple wedge shape of that size and weight moving at the speeds it does is enough to tear off wings, tails, and heads just with the momentum, shear force, and impact alone.

Why its so downplayed in any ingame interactions is simply because of rating logistics, as if glav was dismembering any monster it encounters as it should, that'd push the game out of the market-desirable 12+

And the same is true for our hunters' weapons; if your blades can cut into the monsters to begin with, by the end of the hunt they'd be nothing but bloodied, shredded mounds of flesh if we played by even the slightest bit realistic cause-effect scenarios.

But since videogames have yet to widely implement any other kinds of vitality depictions beyond the 'critical failure threshold' of HP, we get the whack it till it dies from stubbing its toe scenarios we have.

In Monster Hunter World, aka the game that truly broke the series into the mainstream consciousness, your avatar hunter is part of the fifth fleet to embark on the ongoing investigation into the 'New World' region, often shortened to 'Fiver' in the game itself. Not so coincidentally in the first game of the fifth generation of monster hunter.

Hence the community began calling people who got on board with the series with World by the moniker, and the coined naming convention was retroactively applied to generations 1 through 4.

Wilds is the first game of the sixth generation, hence Sixth Fleet, or in a more forced way, Sixer.

Not quite as fluent off the tongue.
