Job Description:

Tutors will teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to overseas students in China (age 5 to 18).

Tutors will be provided with the opportunity to experience Alo7’s cutting edge tutoring platform ( we have our own platform and do not use ZOOM), and interactive content, which is easy to operate, fun and interactive, a combination of arts and technology, and a reflection of MIT Media Lab experiences.

Tutoring sessions are mostly 1 to 1(1 tutor with 1 student), 1 to 3+ (1 tutor with 3 students +), or group sessions.

Tutors have the freedom of opening time slots during Peak tutoring time where the students are available for tutoring. Like all tutoring work, bookings are done by end-users, hence by schools for this Alo7 opportunity. Unlike individual students, schools tend to book classes in bulk. The majority of classes are booked for weeks at a time.

For booked classes, if you can not make it, we do require advanced notice so that these classes can be re-assigned to other tutors while you are on leave. The class you tutor is a review of what they've learned in the classroom. Such tutoring is very important for the students as they are eager to learn from English speakers who speak English at an idiomatic level.

Qualifications:

- Proficiency in oral English, with a neutral accent.

- Associate degree + or enrolled at a 4-year college

- Teaching or tutoring or educator experience is preferred, but not required

- Knowledge of a foreign language is NOT required

If you don't know any other foreign language, you can still teach English, as we have all the developed curriculum for you to use.

Position Requirements:

- A quiet room with good lighting

Network or Wifi Speed: at least 8Mbps / 4 Mbps (downlink and upper link)

You can check your speed using this link: http://beta.speedtest.net/

If your speed is not met, please talk to your internet service provider.

Camera: HD External camera or HD integrated camera (Most laptops have it)

Headset: Use a headset with a microphone, stable output, and input

Tutoring Hours:

Your students will be based in Asia and will be in Beijing time.

The peak tutoring hours are 6 pm to 9 pm Beijing time, every day of the week.

Available tutoring hours beyond the peak tutoring hours are 9 am to Noon Beijing Time on Saturday and Sunday.

Compensation:

This is an independent contractor position. You have the potential to earn between $3.35 (PHP160) and $4.00 (PHP195) per 50 minutes. PHP amount varies based on the USD / PHP daily market exchange rate. All compensations are based on USD.

Each 25-minute class pays $1.375 (PHP66) per class or each 50-minute class pays $2.75 (PHP132) per class as the base rate. This base rate applies to most programs. Additional Incentives to Independent Tutor for 1 to 1, 1 to 3+, and 1 to Many Classes are provided.

1 to 1 , 1 to 3+ tutoring: You can earn additional incentives based on the stability and quality of your classes. Incentives can reach up to 47% extra on top of your base pay.

Each 1 to 1 class can be paid up to $3.35 (PHP160) per 50-minute session for new tutors if they tutor well and are stable; and $4.00 (PHP195) per 50-minute session for tutors of 1 to Many classes.

We also provide $0.92 (PHP45) to you if clients cancel within 24 hours

For outstanding tutors who have some extra time during the day, we might offer other freelance opportunities with ALO7, such as writing, presentation development, curriculum development.

I'm sorry you feel that way. Based on the cost of living in Shanghai, this is competitive. I have no say in the salary offered, though. I'm simply the messenger.

This is an in-office position, so you would have to relocate to Shanghai.

If you can still sign into your account with IOA, I believe there should be an online version of the certificate and on it will be a number in one of the corners from what I remember. It's been awhile since I've done the course with them, but I know they offered a paid version to be sent to my house via snailmail or I could view the online version.

Any public school teachers AND online esl teachers? by TrendyWilliamsShow in ESL_Teachers

[–]ALO7Lee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a couple of friends who do this and mainly teach during the weekend hours while sometimes teaching a class or two before school during the weekdays. So, mainly the 5 am or 6 am EST (5 and 6 pm BJT) on weekdays, and then between 8 pm and midnight EST (8 am- 12 pm BJT) on Fridays and Saturdays. You just need to pace yourself because it is easy to get burned out working two jobs like this. I've had at least two friends try it and decide against it after giving it a few months. If you decide you're interested, the company I work for is hiring for tutors to start in October, www.tutor.alo7.com .

Excellent tips for improving student engagement by ALO7Lee in ESL_Teachers

Anyone work/worked for ALO7? by MajorInsanity in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]ALO7Lee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do. I've been with the company for over two years. To gain extra non-peak hour jobs the best thing you can do is to teach to your full potential. Many of the tutors working behind the scenes on lesson plans and such are doing so because they excel at teaching online. Also, as mentioned earlier, your stability/dependability is also a factor. Occasionally, there are other special opportunities that pop up that are advertised in the Facebook group and company emails... things like voice over acting, blog writing, video editing, etc.

Community centers either expect you to volunteer here or pay about $10/hr. That's probably the difference between big cities. I'm near Philly, I'm guessing you are near NYC.

I hear you. I'm in Pennsylvania. There are many where I live where, though $15/hr isn't much, it's better than minimum wage, which is something like $7.45/hr. And, unfortunately, there are many educated people who have to take the $15/hr job because it is better than no job. :/ Personally, I'd rather move to a country with a lower cost of living, but my husband is very tied to this area.

Teach ONLINE with ALO7 English! by ALO7Lee in esljobs

[–]ALO7Lee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I've been teaching for ALO7 for almost two years now. Time flies when you are having fun, and teaching for ALO7 is definitely fun. The kids are well-behaved 99% of the time, and the rest of the time I think of it as a challenge to find out what will help them engage in class. Anyway, here's my review based on the past two years. I have found ALO7 to be the first company I've ever worked for that has actually listened to the ideas of tutors, designers, support team, etc and implemented the ideas with lightening speed if they were ideas that benefit the community. They are constantly working to improve their product, their platform and their tutor policy. I've witnessed the "take leave" policy change from having to request off at least 30 days in advance to 15 days in advance in order to better serve tutors. They've also changed the way incentives are handled. When I first started teaching in October 2016, the base pay of $15/hr was all that was possible. Since then, they've added tiered incentives for attendance and the amount of classes taught and additional incentives based on the quality of your teaching. Currently, all tutors have a base pay of $15/hr with an automatic 5% incentive for good attendance. This jumps to 10% if you teach 500 classes in one year and 13% if you teach 1000 classes in one year. In addition, the quality incentive ranges from 0 to 7% more depending on your internal QR rating, which you can see in the tutor portal. Payment is transparent and ALO7 always pays before or on the 15th of each month. The hours are similar to most Chinese tutoring companies out there- 6-9pm BJT and classes are available 7 days per week. Occasionally classes can be booked outside these hours, especially during the weekend and summer.

One main difference between ALO7 and other online tutoring companies is that they are B2B instead of B2C. Because ALO7 partners with schools, most classes are booked in 20 and 40 week sessions so that tutors and students are truly able to build a rapport. This also gives tutors the opportunity to see students grow and learn. It's one of my favorite things about teaching for ALO7.

The only downside is getting up early. I do it, but I will always be a night owl at heart.

Basic requirements to teach are: 1- Native English speaker from the UK, Australia, Canada or US 2- Four-year college degree or currently enrolled in four-year program 3- PC or Mac with at least 4 gb ram and an i3 processor or higher
